Here you go Everyone that has ever worked a kitchen knows this knife and knows that, it's fuck ugly, it's cheap, and god damn is it the toughest, hardest working tool in the damned kitchen.
I’m pretty sure I know something similar to the sticks you’re describing. You can get a high quality one for $20 off of Amazon: Master Lock Security Bar, Adjustable Door Security Bar. They’re telescoping/sliding metal pole thingies that you force under the doorknob (on your side of the door). You need to adjust the height of the rod to fight your doorknob snugly. This basically makes it impossible for anybody to enter from the other side unless they somehow destroy the door.
Edit: there’s also this: Doorricade Door Bar
Instant Pot pressure cooker. It's been a lot of fun to use and I'm trying to expand my recipes that use it since I've had it.
Instant Pot Amazon
These also work with no changes to get in trouble over.
I believe someone suggested this last time, but get a security door bar that you can use to keep the door from opening while you're at home. Quick, cheap, and you're not damaging or changing the property without the landlord's permission- it won't prevent unauthorized showings while you're out but it'll at least keep them from walking in on you while you're in bed again.
> When we told him that I use the futon as a couch or for entertaining guests, he told us that we have to text him in a clock in clock out fashion whenever guests enter the premises regardless of whether they spend the night.
Unless that requirement is listed in the lease I would tell him you're not going to do that.
> 1) What can I do regarding his random entrances? He’s already just walked into my apartment no knocking or announcement and I don’t doubt he will do it again.
Put a security stick on the door when you're home... that will prevent unwanted entry. Landlord cannot just randomly enter - as mentioned by /u/poolparty90019 it has to be with notice and for a specific purpose.
get a dog, alarm system.
you can buy cheap $20 door jam rods, they work for sliding and normal doors.
Master Lock 265D Door Security Bar, Adjustable from 27-1/2 in. to 44-1/2 in, White, Pack of 1 [link]
strengthen your doors with longer lock screws and reinforced metal frame parts.
buy and train with a gun. have a family plan and drill and practice what you all should do.
get more motion sensor lights.
even if you don’t have them get those big warning stickers for gates and windows/doors that indicate you have a big ass dog and or a security system.
maybe you can find some half joking half serious sticker that has a picture of a pit bull ‘My Pitbull Will Bite and Never Let Go’
You do not need to pay that much for a quality knife. Victorinox are good and affordable I have one that is about 8 years old and it has held up great. My SO is a professional chef and even she will use it over her super nice, expensive Wusthof chef knives.
>But for real, you need a knife with a nice depth to it, so you can get a good chop on. Even a cheap one treated well would be better than chopping with the one you have.
A decent knife is a must. That's the classic "low cost, but decent" choice (there are others, but this is the most commonly available choice). It will make a big difference. Makes a good present if you can't afford it outright.
I keep this behind my apartment door and my bedroom door (just in case 😅) Master Lock 265D Door Security Bar, Pack of 1, White [link]
You can actually buy them now, they're called smoke buddies. That thing saved my life when living in a dorm, it's incredibly effective.

I use a door bar which is super sturdy, it would prevent even an attempted kick-in. Wishing you safety and peace of mind

As a motorcycle racer, we pay a lot of attention to track temps b/c we get different tires depending on the heat. I have my IR surface temp thermometer for reading tire and track temperatures
Hot days can mean ridiculously hot surface temps... as in hot enough to blister your feed in a single step or two
It’s this one!

god that’s terrifying... all of sound like dangerous and terrifying situations. possible assulters, peeping toms, maybe robbers?? it’s freaking endless. sometimes it’s terrifying just being a woman... if i were you I’d absolutely get some protection and a dog before living on your own. it’s hard to raise a puppy but beyond worth it. sometimes just having a second set of senses is worth it, the company is very comforting too.
there’s also a stick that you can get for your door - one like this

You can get a bar like this: [link]
You don't need to install anything so a landlord can't complain about you altering the apartment and no one will be able to open the door from the outside while it's against the door even if they have keys to all the locks.
Yikes! Consider getting yourself one of these for your apartment door -- that way, even if he somehow gets a key for it, he still can't get in while you're home.
$11 on Amazon- I have two of these and highly recommend it.
If you already have a food scale learn how to use it- if you tare out between each ingredient they are fast and easy to use.
Everyone thinks they are going to be too much trouble until they start and see how easy and efficient it really is.
>How can I estimate how much food I am eating more accurately?
Eyeballing doesn't work.
I'm happy to recommend the one I use every day, ATK rated it best value as it's literally under $40 (sometimes you can find it on sale even cheaper)
Victorinox Fibrox Pro Chef's Knife, 8-Inch Chef's
and it is really a spectacular chef's knife.
I know pro chefs that use it and swear buy it (read the reviews) :)
I just bought this one for myself today on Amazon. Seems like a killer deal $78.50 normally $235.
Instant Pot IP-DUO60 7-in-1 Programmable Pressure Cooker, 6Qt/1000W, Stainless Steel Cooking Pot and Exterior, Latest 3rd Generation Technology [link]
Now I just need to learn how to use it
Probably not bad if you're ordering something anyways and want to add it on, but if you really want one of these I'd pay $15 for this: [link]
333 cu ft versus 48 cu ft means spending a lot less often pulling it out of the safe to recharge.
This depends, but usually no. The lock installed on your front door is extremely important for security. You can add a security bar such as this for when you are home, but it is no substitute for a good lock installed correctly.
Even if it's a good lock, if the landlord doesn't make a practice of rekeying the lock with each tenant, you have no idea who has a key to your apartment.
Change your lock. Check your lease to find the exact language. You may be able to change the lock without permission if the provisions against alterations are generic and you are in certain states, provided you give your landlord a key.
Otherwise, you could try to get permission to change it, provided that you give them a key. Most landlords are reasonable, especially if you keep asking about it. It's such an inconsequential alteration because you can just put the old lock back when done.
If they need further incentive, and it's particularly important to you, tell them you are installing a higher grade lock that they can keep when you move out. This probably won't work if it's a large company with many units, but for smaller landlords or if you are renting a house or something from its owner, that can often work.
I would not be able to sleep at night with a shitty landlord-installed kwikset on my door. I always put on my own lock, and it's never been an issue. One time I forgot to give my landlord a key, and it was a reasonably large property management company. They just asked me for a key and I gave them one and it wasn't an issue.
Also, when I'm talking about locks here, I specifically mean the deadbolt. The deadbolt is where you get your security, and it needs to be properly installed with the strike plate secured with long screws to the frame of the dwelling -- NOT just into the door jamb.
edit: I just realized you had a roommate who moved out. Yeah, you need to request your lock is rekeyed or replaced.
For things that don't have nutrition information on them like apples, meat, cooking oil, and vegetables I use the USDA food database to get and check calorie information. In MFP, you can search for things like "USDA gala apples" or "USDA chicken breast" to get entries from the USDA that other people have entered into the database.
This is the food scale I have. It's pretty cheap and made of plastic, but it's held up to my using it multiple times a day for over a year.
No such thing as a 'healthy slow cooker', because you don't eat the slow cooker itself.
That being said, it's all about the Instant Pot. These things are awesome.
I’ve used this one for 3 years. No complaints. It was essential to my weight loss
Whatever scale you end up getting, make sure it has a TARE function. Makes life easier
So you are in TJ Maxx looking for a good Japanese starter knife? Probably not going to find one there.
That said, these are the same knife, no difference. Probably 440 steel and not worth your money. They go for about $15 on Amazon.
As far as a different option, I am not sure of a good one of this type at a cheap price. If you are dead-set on japanese-style, I don't have an answer for you.
But if you are willing to go western, go Victorinox Fibrox chef's knife for about $35.
Just a heads-up: Thermoworks products are top-of-the-line for consumer kitchen thermometers, but the only major benefit over cheaper products is the speed to report an accurate temp. But speed isn't an issue with cheaper IR thermometers because IR is an instant reading. Get yourself a $15 IR thermometer on Amazon; it's just as good as Thermoworks for IR.
If only I had been smart enough in college to be like "hey, instead of stuffing dryer sheets into a toilet paper roll, we should lace carbon filters inside of a plastic tube and sell it to stoners"
Pick up one of these. When it’s full you just plug it in the wall and it drys out the beads. If you have a safe a dehumidifier and a golden rod are solid investments.
You don't need a knife set, you can get the vast majority of kitchen tasks done with just a chefs knife and paring/utility knife. The rest of the set knives will usually just sit in the block gathering dust.
The Victorinox Fibrox chefs knife is a very popular recommendation because it is a pretty good knife for a pretty good price.
You can also consider a pairing knife from the same manufacturer.
The Bonavita variable temp kettle is on sale at Amazon right now for only $43. It's definitely "fancy", it's normally around $70-80 but it is under your budget. This would work great for you.
I use this one and I love it. It's so easy to switch between units and to zero it out. Best ever.
I know you specifically asked about automatic drip, but have they considered a nice electric kettle and a french press?
I've had more than a couple people realize their love for coffee after trying a different brewing method.
Don't buy sets. Sets are usually the worst quality you can get for the money.
If you replace one at a time, I would start with your chef's knife.
I use a Victorinox knife that is great.
Victorinox Fibrox Pro Chef's Knife, 8-Inch Chef's FFP [link]
If you REALLY want a set here is one that includes that.
Victorinox 4-Piece Knife Set with Fibrox Handles [link]
For care, unless you have kids, I would go for a magnetic knife strip. It keeps them accessable without banging them in a drawer. You know about dishwashers, but the other piece is, if you dishwasher clean it once, you could cause a weakness in the edge that will break off a big chunk when you sharpen it.
Get a honing steel to realign the edge after each use. It doesn't sharpen it, but it will straighten the edge if it is tilted slightly from hitting the cutting board. Find a YouTube video on how to use them as it is easier to see than read.
What the fuck are you smoking?
One of the more popular kettles in the tea community is this and it is great [link] there are a few higher end ones that heat up even faster as well.
The variable temp is important for tea ofc but lmfao @ you thinking that I'm using a stove or that it would be unsafe. This thing will hold the temp for 2 hours before it gives up and turns off.
Your experience seriously sucks. I hear you loud and clear on the gun control point as well. I hope you don't mind a few questions:
Thanks much, and glad you and your girlfriend are OK. I also suggest investing in a door barricace. Even something like this could make a difference.
She's not entitled to use your things and her behavior to being denied your property is pretty scary. She seems dramatic about inconsequential things and dangerous in general if she's trying to physically assault people. Leaving the door unlocked is/was actively putting you in danger. I also wouldn't be surprised if she purposely slept with your friends to inconvenience you or hurt/get back at you for some imagined drama.
She's not your friend. Don't fall into that trap again. Don't add her back on social media, block her instead. She's selfish, has boundary issues, is prone to drama, and, worst of all, she's violent. Start video recording every single interaction you have with her, especially in situations like the one where she was calling you a bitch and trying to force her way into the room. If you need to seek legal action against her or call the police, having evidence is going to help you.
Unfortunately, you need to protect yourself from her until you can leave. Act nice, but be wary always. Don't move your stuff back into common areas, continue keeping it all in your room. Replace the screws that hold your door hinges to the frame with longer screws. Get a door security pole/bar or doorstop to keep her from forcing her way into your room. Start looking for a new place to live ASAP.
Also I'd personally endorse and recommend as [Victorinox Fibrox]. It's such an easy knife to use for all-around purposes.([link])
I’ve no idea about the harassment but I wanted to recommend getting a door stopper stick. I too have had maintenance enter my apartment when I was asleep. Super creepy! Master Lock 265D Door Security Bar, Adjustable from 27-1/2 in. to 44-1/2 in, White, Pack of 1, [link]
The Victorinox Fibrox 8 inch chef’s knife is only $36 on Amazon and is consistently rated top honors by America’s Test Kitchen. It is sharp, keeps an edge, and even though I own a Wusthof I usually end up reaching for it first. It’s not $80-100 but I still can’t recommend it enough!
If you’re looking for something reliable and sharp for daily use (and aren’t yet sure-about/familiar-with high end knives), look no further.
I think you should tell the neighbors now, and not just the one you saw him trying to get into because it's probably not just your apartment and theirs. There's no reason to wait for him to come back before you tell them. They should know there's someone coming around trying get into people's apartments.
Also, report it to the complex and ask them what they intend to do about it to keep you safe. If the doors/handles don't lock properly, tell them they need to be replaced, at their expense, with ones that are actually secure. Ask them if you can install a deadbolt that their maintenance people will put in if you supply the lock.
For now, you can get a door bar like this one that props under your door handle to stop the door from being opened.
If you have an unused phone lying around, there are apps that can turn it into a motion activated camera. If you have a front window, put it there with the camera facing out. If you're desperate, you can even tape it to your peephole. It should work. You can use painter's tape to keep it on the door and it won't leave residue or damage it.
You can also point an external webcam out the window to catch the guy. There are camera control apps that have motion activation.
You really don't even need to go that high. The Victorianox 8" vibrox pro chefs knife. Solid all rounder and one of americas test kitchens favourites.
Edit: if you want a nicer looking version you can get the rosewood handle.
This one for me, the variable temp control is a really nice feature. seems like it's on sale, looks like a darn good price to me.
Edit. Sale price is gone. That was quick
Oddly enough, I picked up this one about a week ago.
But I got it because my kid got a pet snake for his b-day and we need to make sure its enclosure is the right temp! I have one of those Himalayan salt blocks that was a present, so thanks for the reminder that I need to use it. The temp. gun is easy to use and seems to work well, I just can't vouch for its utility in cooking yet.
What are you going to cook on your block?
A pressure cooker makes eating a diet heavy in beans and grains much easier. I'm going to shill without compensation for the Instant Pot IP-DUO which is a popular countertop multi-function cooker (pressure cooking, slow cooking, hot plate saute mode, yogurt making) you see recommended on a lot of food blogs for good reason. It's convenient because you just punch in the cooking time and let it do its pressure thing without monitoring a burner. You can cook most any dried bean variety in an hour (tastes better than canned and cheaper), long-cooking grains like barley and wild rice take about half the usual amount of time, and whole white and sweet potatoes steam up in 10 minutes. I use mine all the time to cook rice, dried beans, and one-pot dinners. Think chickpea curry, fast rice pilafs and lentils, wheat berries, risotto without all the stirring, and homemade hummus. It has been going on sale on Amazon pretty often: yesterday was down to $72 and has been as low as $69, is $99 right now (honestly still worth it even at that price but keep your eyes peeled if you're looking for the best deal).
edit: $79 today (12/20): [link]
just get an Aeropress, Hario mini mill, and a Bonavita 1L variable temp gooseneck kettle (which is on sale)
You'll be set for a long time to come.
From there, try different coffees at a wide range of prices and go with the one that is the best balance between satisfaction and cost. Especially with that liquid sugar milk stuff, you might find some cheaper beans that perform just as well as anything else.. and if you're happy with that, that is the goal :)
If you can spare about $20, something like this door security bar would be more effective than a chair. Be safe!
So why get this over some non-gun branded scale that also measures in grains? It's not like "grain" is some super special gun specific measurement. I guess you can't load a mortar with the amazon one but 300 grains seems like more than enough
That AC is broken. You should temp the air coming out of the vents, it should be in the '50's mid-range.
>I slammed my own door shut, locked it, and put a chair in front of it for good measure.
Get a Security Bar! They are cheap as hell, work better than a chair and are an absolute must-have security accessory for anyone who lives in an apartment. These keep people who may have keys (landlord, former tenants, particularly sneaky people, etc.) from opening your door.
They are probably even more useful when you live next door to a murder with mommy issues.
Just a basic chef's knife with a decent edge would probably work best for this. Victorinox makes a really good entry level chef's knife that's not expensive. I don't know of a better value for the money
Get yourself an Instant Pot off Amazon.
It can be used to sauté/brown meat, scramble eggs, cook bacon, etc.
With a little effort you can make probably 90% of the foods you’d use a stove / oven for.
On field day if anyone asks what it is, tell them it’s a fancy rice cooker (it can do that as well).
Or, just hide it in the trunk of your car and bring it in after inspection.
Oh, and if you like hard boiled eggs, get one of these egg cookers.
It sounds crazy, but you put six eggs in it, measure out a small amount of water, and it’ll soft, medium, or hard boil the eggs based just on the amount of water you put inside.
In most states, tenants have a right to 24 hours notice before the property is shown. Check your local (state AND city) tenants' rights laws and then you'll know if you're allowed to bar/block the entrances when you aren't expecting anyone. (You probably are.)
A cheap rubber stopper under each door while you're home should do the trick, or you can get really secure with something like [link]
Eyeballing meth is a no go. A piece of meth the size of a grain of rice is enough to produce very strong effects if you don't have a large tolerance, it's super potent stuff.

As a dad, my 3 year old started asking for privacy going potty sometimes. I give it to her. Even though she still needs help with her wiping and pants afterwards. Even though she's not strong enough to pull the flusher. I wait until she opens the door.
Honestly I feel like “healthy food” can be a subjective term and it can overwhelm you. What’s considered healthy to me may not be considered healthy to someone else. I try to reframe it as looking at foods that have a good nutritional value compared to those that don’t. Like for example, I know some Greek yogurt with berries will fill me up better than a pop tart will for breakfast.
In general though, I try and eat a balanced diet. Lean proteins, beans, vegetables, fruits, complex carbs, etc. I try and reach my protein, fiber, and fat goals. these are all foods that are going to fill me up. Do I still eat “unhealthy” stuff like ice cream, chocolate, etc? Hell yeah I do. I just eat it in moderation.
I highly recommend Skinnytaste.com as well. I get pretty much all of my recipes from her. BudgetBytes.com is good too and I’ve also had luck just searching around on Pinterest
My number one tip for anyone starting out that’s counting calories is to get a food scale on Amazon. It makes calorie counting 100 times easier. I bought this one 2 and a half years ago and it works perfectly.
I'm in the same boat but I pulled the trigger because this also replaces my NuWave oven(wife's purchase long before we got together) that I ONLY ever use to incubate my own yogurt. This will save me quite the hassle of ever having to lug that thing up and down from the basement every two weeks. This and I have seriosuly limited cabinet space. This will help me out tremendously.
Also, if you live in an area that qualifies for PrimeNow through Amazon, order it through them(not the same site as amazon), get it delivered TODAY, and save another $15 if you use the code 15OFFNOW. Plus get another $5 credit for future use. Got mine for $66 including tax and delivery.
That's like asking if you prefer blondes or red heads. Knives are a very personal thing.
This sub loves the Fibrox 8": [link]
I love my Shun chef's & paring knives, personally.
The serrated blade, I just picked up something from Target. The cleaver I have I picked from Amazon. Just need something heavy.
Lastly, red heads. Always.
The Ozeri food scale on Amazon. It's cheap, durable, and hasn't let me down.
Ozeri Food Scale
Google the Ashton Manual ([link]). It was developed by Professor Heather Ashton of Newcastle University - Institute of Neuroscience. She developed an effective, safe protocol for benzodiazepine withdrawal. As u/Angry_Jonny indicated, you should switch to a longer half-life bezodiazepine like Valium or Klonopin, then wean yourself very slowly over months. Buy a cheap but accurate digital scale from Amazon like this one and make 10% cuts.
Read the manual and good luck.
Pairing knife and bread knife are nice to have too. They also make those.
The Victorinox Fibrox Chef's Knife is dishwasher safe, but the abrasives in dish detergents will dull the knife.
If you are worried about cross contamination, you can sanitize your knife (and cutting board) with a mild bleach solution:
Buy your neighbors one of these - Smoke Buddy 0159-BLU Personal Air Filter, Blue [link]
Works quite well in my experience, hopefully they wouldn’t be offended and use it. Otherwise, buy lots of candles 😂

They're actually only about $18 on Amazon.
The Instant Pot is a very popular combination pressure cooker, slow cooker, and more. A top seller on Amazon.
However, what she'd probably like more is some pampering -- a babysitter, a spa day, a massage, something like that. Or for you to do all her chores for one weekend. Or (if it's her thing) some jewelry.
I strongly recommend that you do not take this or any other powdered compound without measuring with a scale, each time. The type of phenibut (FAA/HCL), crystal size, different batches, how you load the spoon, etc., all make it hard to get reliable, repeated doses.
The scales are cheap--here is a very popular one on Amazon:
Phenibut can be a fantastic aid to better living--let us know how it goes!
I love love love my instapot. My favorite go-to Indian recipe is butter chicken. So easy, and the chicken always ends up tender.
I bought mine as a replacent for the rice cooker, and I now barely use the stove anymore. I didn't think it was going to be that way, but something about how easy it is to cook, to clean, and just to get things done in 40 minutes worth of cooking.
Edit: In fact, I just saw this deal on an Instapot from Amazon at r/instapot: [link]
Might be late to the party, but....
INSTA POT ON AMAZON PRIME DAY - $58.99
Just picked mine up, heard they are life changing for prep and bulk cooking. I know it's a bit early for Foodie Friday, but anyone got some good recipes or suggestions for meals to try it out with?
I have a question if you've really kicked down doors.
How effective do you think those bars that lock into the floor to brace the door are?
I saw one once that looked a bit like this security bar
But there were a few differences.
I've never kicked down a door, but if you've got a quality door (solid wood) that seems like it would be fairly effective and easy to implement.
Just an idea for the DIYs who don't want to go build a new home right away.
always make sure locks are on your door, consider a door jamb for extra protection
i've lived here long time and it's happened to me a few times; even people trying to use their keys to get into my apt (that was around 4 yrs ago).
Bonavita is the best you're going to get. It's a little slower at 1000W with no fast boil option, but honestly by the time I've dosed, grinded, and set up to brew, the kettle is usually ready.
If you're willing to stretch a little above $50, Amazon has a very good electric kettle on sale at $54 (down from $99): [link]
I've been using it for over a year and its still going strong.
Put them on your door. Granted they may not be a ‘perfect’ solution but it someone tries to force open a door with you inside it will slow them down. If they are trying to just open it with a key they aren’t getting in. I have used them for years even while at home.
There are plenty of other (similar) work arounds to keep people out of your home/apartment.
BUY A SCALE PLEASE
You can learn more about scales here: PsychonautWiki: Milligram Scales
I use this scale personally, it has served me very well: Amazon: American Weigh Scales GEMINI-20
Remember that meth doses are quite tiny visually. Meth "lines" are more like "bumps" than actual lines, if that makes sense.
When eyeballing meth I sniff matchhead sized piles (after crushing the crystals into a very fine powder) and slowly build the high up. I rarely eyeball my doses though, it never works out well for me when I do.
BUY A SCALE
IF YOU CAN BUY SPEED YOU CAN BUY A FUCKING SCALE

Whoa!!! Mind blown!! Great tip. Just went to Amazon and its one of the Prime deals, at $70 + $5 off for no rush delivery. Even check it on PriceZombie per another persons suggestion. Thank you!!! Instant Pot
If I were you I would spend it on a nice kettle like this or some teaware, or just save it for something else
You're not going to find great quality tea on Amazon
If you want a quality tea sampler I would highly recommend What-Cha's Intro to Tea Collection
it's actually at one of the lowest prices it's ever been right now on amazon. i have one and really recommend it. [link]
In my instant pot. God I love that thing.
I think they're worth it because you can pressure cook AND slow cook AND saute and rice AND all this other stuff.
And I think I saw it on sale for $90 on amazon though on Prime day they had it for like $70! So maybe wait to see what they do for BF/CM !! :D
eta: I used to own a separate rice cooker and a separate slow cooker....and both have been given away now because the instant pot does it all which is fantastic for me because we're limited on counter space.
eta2: here's mine! put an alert on it and check it later come bf/cm. I'm sure it'll drop!
I never use my slow cooker/s now that I have an Instant Pot. All the same foods and dishes can be cooked in the IP as a slow cooker but much-much faster (and even from frozen--really handy and time-saving), and they usually turn out even better because the flavors from the ingredients are being forced into each other and more deeply than when slow cooking.
The IP will also do more things than a slow cooker (which is a one-function appliance).
It can also function as a rice cooker, boil eggs (with shells that easily slip off), make yogurt (if a 7-in-1 model), make cheesecake and dulce de leche and even breads and lasagna, as well as make cook, soups, chicken stock, individual veggies including whole potatoes/squashes, etc, much more quickly. And if sauteing is needed, it can be done right in the pot on its Saute mode (and a lot more I can't even think of at the moment).
I also like it because it seals completely so I'm not smelling the food cooking all day, it's easier and lighter-weight to clean, easy to operate and can be left completely alone after the initial steps, will automatically switch to a Keep Warm mode if no one is home or does anything to the unit to change that, it's well built so lasts, has a stainless steel pot (rather than a non-stick coated one), etc, etc.
If she wants to check out the breadth of things she can make and do with an IP (and also ask questions if she wants), you should have her join the largest Instant Pot group, called "Instant Pot Community," at Facebook (she can just read the group if not a Facebook member) and also read some of the 15,000 glowing reviews at amazon:
Sure! Congrats on starting your journey!
I got this one from Target and I like it so far- seems pretty accurate with everything! The Quick Start Guide suggests this one from Amazon, which is a smidge cheaper and good for if you aren't in the US or don't have a nearby Target :P ...I just love Target and go there for everything LOL!
First, the Instant Pot brand of electric pressure cookers (multi-cookers) are excellent for keto, or for any other ways of eating and for lots of foods. And they have loads of advantages.
Note however that this is the largest Instant Pot model, the 8 qt. Most of the IP models are 6 qt, with one older model of LUX being 5 qt.
One of the 6 qt models went on sale very briefly yesterday, and one or more of them could still go on sale at some point today but who knows? (The last few big Amazon sales saw the best-selling DUO60 6 qt --see below-- on significant sale for the whole period.)
The 8 qts are very good for certain types of situations:
...large family size or cooking for lots of people at the same time (e.g., more than 4 people, and might be good for 4 if one or more of those people were teen males)
...those who like to "prep" and otherwise make large amounts then freeze for later
...those who like to have loads of leftovers from virtually anything they cook
...those who make large quantities of stock and do that frequently
...those who have plenty of countertop space (and perhaps won't be keeping the unit under cabinets), or who have large/tall areas in cabinets, etc, to store them
...those who don't have a problem with the larger/heavier inner pot re cleaning and carrying when food inside (will be more difficult to rinse/wash in a sink, even with a reasonably tall spout)
P.S. For those who don't know, the sale is only for those who have Amazon's Prime. But it's fine to just sign up for their free trial of Prime, buy during the sale and maybe later too, then cancel the free trial before it's due to end.
This is so far the most-sold model, and still really excellent:
Today the Instant Pot is on sale on Amazon for $69 ([link]). Might be a bit more than a traditional crockpot, but it can act as a slow cooker, as well as, a steamer, presssure cooker and many other functions.
$80 right now; i bought a different version for $60 last year on a lightning deal on amazon (mine dosn't have a low pressure setting , which is pretty much only good for making yogurt.
You can get the temp controlled one for $55 from Amazon Warehouse Deals. I bought mine that way and it works great! They say “used” but they are basically just open box products. I buy a bunch of stuff that way and have never had a problem. But if you don’t like it you can always return it.
Dude just amazon prime the Gemini mg scale right now it’s like $25

I have one. It lets me accurately figure out calories in homemade food so I can portion better. I bought the one that the TDEE calculator recommends on amazon. I like it a ton, the batteries are included, it’s accurate af (I test it with water occasionally since 1ml = 1g) and it’s easy to clean. I used to underestimate things in oz all the time, now my guesses are pretty spot on. Working on getting grams accurate now.
Yes, it's necessary. I'm also 5'1 and we do not have a lot of wiggle room. Since you haven't been seeing progress for over a month it's time to be even more meticulous. Try something new and buy a weigh scale. Nothing fancy. I have this one:
Remember that besides the health benefits of IF, without a calorie deficit you're not going to see weightloss.
Victorinox 8" Chef's knife is the usual recommendation https://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-Fibrox-Chefs-Knife-8-Inch/dp/B008M5U1C2 for entry level knife users. They are also pretty common in commercial kitchens.
Anyone starting out on gongfu should use one of these. It is all of the brewing supplies in one. They come in glass and can also be found on Amazon, but I find that this metal one is fit for travel.
Get a variable temperature kettle. Many recommend a Bonavita.
As for tea...
Oolong is a broad category and you should not get started on Pu-erh yet. Choose a tea type and sample its sub-types.
Vendors (Check under the subreddit's "about" tab)
I use the Bonavita Electric Kettle.
It's a steal. I originally got it to use for pourover coffee, but the temperature adjustment ended up being amazing once I got into tea, too.
As for temperature, it's different for every tea. But the "industry standards" seem generally correct. One deviation I can say for Taiwanese Oolongs, I always hit those with boiling water.
You’re not stupid. That’s a freaky situation and it’s perfectly normal to be flustered while trying to think of solutions.
Alternatively, you could use one of these to block your door. Master Lock 265D Door Security Bar, Pack of 1, White [link]
Wow that really sucks. It sounds like you hit on the most likely culprit: the cooktop gets too hot or heats the pan too fast. If it is still flaking off just on medium low heat that means the damage was probably already done on an earlier attempt to cook…all the seasoning was weakened and is coming off over time. I’d suggest using an IR thermometer to understand the temperature range and timing of your new cooktop. You know you don’t want the temp much over 500 F max, and the temp should climb slowly to get there. If the Temps look normal then there might be another culprit. I’d use a Cainmail scrubber to knock off any seasoning that’s willing to come off with a good scrub and then reseason with flax oil. The flax oil is controversial because some claim it flakes over time but I had pans that were flaking around the edges chronically and flax oil solved it for me. I’m certain you can make this work with just a little experimentation. Good luck!
Gotta get a milligram scale on Amazon. Like $30 for a good one. I use this one [link]
A decent kitchen knife doesn't have to be expensive!
8 inch - $40
6 inch - $25
0.1g is definately considered the normal dose, but occasionally there are those who are sensitive to Microdosing, so starting lower .05 is best.
And you need a very accurate scale, a jeweler's scale, similar to this:
Also you really need to read all the info and pick a dosage regimen. Fadimans is 5 days straight with a 2 day break but it's been pretty much established that your tolerance goes up quickly so a protocol like 3 times a week, mon, wed, fri is easy or 2 days on 1 day off.
I would set several food rules and eat intuitively to be quite honest. If you are trying to lose weight, you will need to eat less and/or healthier.
As for portion sizes, I would maybe purchase a food scale off Amazon. This is the food scale I have--it's really popular on /r/LoseIt, it's simple, and does the job.
I can't speak for you or others, but I find that the most important foods to weigh or track are butter, oils, nuts, and seeds. Yes, some oils, nuts (as well as nut butters), and seeds are healthy, but they can also be relatively high in calories.
Also, if you google "portion sizes recommendations," find a guide/layout (there's quite a few available on pinterest), print it out or screenshot it to your phone, and maybe only weigh the foods that you tend to get carried away with. Don't restrict your fruits and veggies, but if you're using oils to cook, weigh before! If you're adding a condiment to your food, weigh before! Adding cheese, cream, or nut butter beforehand? Weight beforehand.
you won't have to necessarily track per say, but you'll eventually learn what a portion size should or shouldn't look like. I know for me, I was overestimating what EVOO and a serving of PB look like lol
Just eat what feels good and leaves you filling full! And it's okay to have a cheat meal once a week. One salad won't make you healthier, and one or two cupcakes won't make you gain weight.
EDIT: Grammar and spelling lol
As someone who has lost weight, there is no magic weight loss tip or trick.
How did you calculator your TDEE? I don't know your stats so I can't do it for you, but MFP is known for being wonky and off. Use this TDEE calculator, and subtract 300-500 and that will be a number to help you lose weight, but do not go below 1200.
If you haven't already, I recommend purchasing a food scale and weighing every single piece of food you put into your mouth, including liquids, fruits, and veggies. You can purchase a food scale off of Amazon for less than $15, this one is popular in /r/loseit.
Also, do you have cheat meals or cheat days? All it takes is one cheat day to set you back 2-4 days. You can absolutely have a cheat meal, but that's just what it should be--a meal. When I wasn't losing weight it was because of my cheat days. I had a cheat breakfast, cheat lunch, cheat dinner, and cheat snacks in between. Now I just have a cheat meal with a cheat dessert, usually in the form of cupcakes or bundts.
If you haven't already, check out /r/xxfitness! The ladies there are super duper nice and helpful and their FAQ is great. /r/Loseit is also another really great sub!
