You might be interested in a book called A State of Change. A landscape artist painted a series of reconstructions of past California environments, with commentary. It's about as close as one can get to seeing the California that was with one's own eyes.
<em>A State of Change: Forgotten Landscapes of California</em> seems like exactly what you're looking for. It's unfortunately out of print, with used copies being unreasonably expensive, but there's a chance you could track down a copy at a library, or perhaps e-mail the author.

Marco Bucci has a couple of really good videos on this topic. Talent is not required, but you will need to know a few drawing principles though. Make sure you read up on line, perspective, light and shadow, etc. Nathan Fowkes also has a great course on landscape painting in book form.

Ovi gore prozori u usporedbi s stolicama imaju tri metra, al možda si tako htio. Stabla mogu bit puno bolja, čak i za crtanje pod nastavom. Ove tanke črčke po putu izgledaju ko da si dao mlađoj sestri da završi.
Inače, materijali su pogođeni poprilično okej (staklo, krošnja, drvo), kompozicija je oke i sama činjenica da si završio je super.

Mislim da će ti dobro doć. Npr voda bi mogla bit vodoravnija, a ne da se kuži taj potez ruke koji ide u neki luk. Kućica da se vidi i s druge strane stabla. Iza breza provalija. Golo stablo lijevo nema odsjaj u vodi. Ogroman i neprivlačan potpis. Al sve u svemu ic okej.

Jack Hamm has a good book Drawing Scenery: Landscapes and Seascapes concerning landscapes.
Harold Speed also has The Practice and Science of Drawing which covers some very informative compositional, drawing, and painting theory.
It looks like both are available on internet archive too if you want to flip through them.

"Drawing Scenery: Landscapes and Seascapes" by Jack Hamm is a relatively cheap thin introductory book ($13.49 new, $4 - $7 used). This book is filled with pencil sketches, whereby the author demonstrates a lot of the basic techniques of image composition. Some topics covered in this book (randomly pulled from TOC):
- Commanding observer's attention
- Focal points and areas
- Charting the eye's course
- Principle of "the Threes"
- Entry point & follow-through of a picture
- Comprehension factors in a picture
- Contrasting values
and lots more.
Then the book dives into strategies for
- trees and foliage
- rocks and mountains
- clouds and skies
- water: oceans, lakes, rivers, falls
Simple pencil sketches --> powerful concepts applicable to image composition in most other media.
I'm super excited for the book, so I'm going to share. Nathan Fowkes, renowned and amazing entertainment landscape artist (Puss in Boots, Sinbad, tons of Disney and DreamWorks, teacher at Schoolism), is releasing a book at the end of the month.

The book is Mastering Composition by Ian Roberts. I've known about the rule of thirds and the golden ratio, etc. since high school, but this book has made me look at composition in an entirely new light. It's a short read but packed with info and good exercises.

The art book market is very limited when it comes to composition and although dated, this book is among the top of the heap.
My cat just stares at me like I am crazy. But some cats really get off on it. I love this book. I recommend it to everyone who is artistic and lives with cats.
Then there is the cat painting competitions. Have you seen that? where people paint their cats? Here is a book on it. There's also a dog painting competition. I invite you to google both of those if you want to see some awesome images. :)
This is not my work- it's Bob Eggleton's. However, I absolutely DO have a great tip for you. Pick up a copy of Michael Carroll's Space Art and do the paintings in there. It's not a huge leap from landscapes to spacescapes, especially when you do views of planets from their moons and stuff like that. It really only takes a few different color choices.
