You might be interested in a book called A State of Change. A landscape artist painted a series of reconstructions of past California environments, with commentary. It's about as close as one can get to seeing the California that was with one's own eyes.

<em>A State of Change: Forgotten Landscapes of California</em> seems like exactly what you're looking for. It's unfortunately out of print, with used copies being unreasonably expensive, but there's a chance you could track down a copy at a library, or perhaps e-mail the author.

Marco Bucci has a couple of really good videos on this topic. Talent is not required, but you will need to know a few drawing principles though. Make sure you read up on line, perspective, light and shadow, etc. Nathan Fowkes also has a great course on landscape painting in book form.

Mislim da će ti dobro doć. Npr voda bi mogla bit vodoravnija, a ne da se kuži taj potez ruke koji ide u neki luk. Kućica da se vidi i s druge strane stabla. Iza breza provalija. Golo stablo lijevo nema odsjaj u vodi. Ogroman i neprivlačan potpis. Al sve u svemu ic okej.

Jack Hamm has a good book Drawing Scenery: Landscapes and Seascapes concerning landscapes.

Harold Speed also has The Practice and Science of Drawing which covers some very informative compositional, drawing, and painting theory.

It looks like both are available on internet archive too if you want to flip through them.

This book is filled with pencil sketches, whereby the author demonstrates a lot of the basic techniques of image composition. Some topics covered in this book (randomly pulled from TOC):

• Entry point & follow-through of a picture
• Comprehension factors in a picture

Then the book dives into strategies for

• water: oceans, lakes, rivers, falls

Simple pencil sketches --> powerful concepts applicable to image composition in most other media.

I'm super excited for the book, so I'm going to share. Nathan Fowkes, renowned and amazing entertainment landscape artist (Puss in Boots, Sinbad, tons of Disney and DreamWorks, teacher at Schoolism), is releasing a book at the end of the month.

The book is Mastering Composition by Ian Roberts. I've known about the rule of thirds and the golden ratio, etc. since high school, but this book has made me look at composition in an entirely new light. It's a short read but packed with info and good exercises.

The Book of Legendary Lands by Umberto Eco. It examines fantasy adn made up worlds through the history of humanity, things such as Atlantis and Avalon

If you're interested in a book to suppliment your studies I recommend Jack Hamm's landscape book

The art book market is very limited when it comes to composition and although dated, this book is among the top of the heap.
