Build the fence. If the parents say anything tell them you plan to start doing nude yoga and expanding your show dogs to include Pit Bulls and that you hope they'll remind their children to ask before coming over.
Tell the neighbors you've been having a critter problem in both the front and back yards and are thinking of installing one of these sprinkler deterrent systems, and again, their kids should not come over unannounced.
And of course, install a few cameras to monitor your property and fancy new sprinklers.
Set up motion detecting sprinklers. Something like this
(Most) cats hate water. He/She will quickly be trained to avoid going in your yard, and it will be much cheaper than any lawyer situation will ever be.
Hot paprika usually works really well. You could also sprinkle cayenne pepper powder all over it. Or just set a motion activated sprinkler out
You can get a motion activated sprinkler that shoots a very intense stream of water; they are used to scare away deer, but it might be a good lawn tantrum deterrent.
When I lived on a corner lot, I was tempted to buy an automatic targetted sprinkler for deer, to keep people from walking across my lawn. https://smile.amazon.com/Orbit-62100-Activated-Sprinkler-Detection/dp/B009F1R0GC?sa-no-redirect=1
I never did, but I wanted to.
You've got to build it right to keep them out of it. Deep sharp sides with lots of cover. I have a optimistic great blue heron that visits daily. He's not getting much. The Kingfishers get some of the babies.
The of course you can setup one of these. link
Lucky for you, it's already a thing. I had something similar to this to keep the neighborhood feral cats from shitting in my garden. Motion Activated Sprinkler
You just need this sprinkler repair tool:
I looked into Amazon a little bit, here is a well-reviewed motion activated water jet deterrent. Looks like it has a powerful spray and can be angled upwards to human-height. Would use less water than a moat. I’m getting giddy thinking about the revenge options.

Also, as a last resort...maybe a low-voltage electrified wire surrounding the trees? With proper warning signage, it might be an option considering it’s on your property and not a fence per se. 😈 Farmers use them to keep in livestock and protect vegetable gardens from rabbits.
Used one of these this past summer to train the neighbors cat to move along.

Wouldn't the Yard Defender work better? Orbit Yard Defender We use it to keep raccoons out of our yard. Works Great!
It would be catnope!
This works very well to keep animals out if your yard. Just can't use it in freezing weather. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009F1R0GC/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_4aDqEbH3TT9YW
Putting mothballs, coyote urine and citrus around the outside of your house have been used to varying effectiveness.
Might be one out back. We access ours from the outside of the kitchen, there's a cap to remove with one screw, and the clean-out is there.
I've used one of these in the past down the clean-out, and it worked.
I second this. If you ask someone without a garden to water your plants, they'll spend 10 seconds doing it where I would normally spend 10 minutes doing it.
I definitely recommend the timer system route. Run some soaker hose through the garden, put it on a timer that runs it for an hour a day (or whatever).
This way you can just ask the relative to make sure the soaker hose is running and that the ground is moist and not have to worry about them under-watering stuff.
At my old house I had a ton of plants in pots that really did need to be watered twice a day or they'd die in the 95F heat. I set up a timer system for them too, there are smaller gauge lines you can run and put fixtures on them to water the plants. It was something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Raindrip-R560DP-Automatic-Container-Hanging/dp/B00J2NRUBI
Thanks! They were actually a gift from someone who was tired of watering my plants for me lol I don’t have the exact link, but I think these are similar. There’s lots of different types!

As neat as your method is, you should've just gone with something like this so you can leave the hose pressurized and you would get instant water spray.
Time to get one of these and a locking gate latch: https://www.amazon.ca/Orbit-62100-Activated-Sprinkler-Detection/dp/B009F1R0GC/ref=asc_df_B009F1R0GC/?tag=googleshopc0c-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=293004366202&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1166640377384616784&hvpone=&hvptwo=&h...
Ran a few runs with this and the product didn't come out as well compared to a different solution I tried. I did 3 different tests each with 25 plants in two different groups. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007I6MN72/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_VXXD5EZZFTTPM5AYAFNA product I ended up finding superior after the tents. Was easier to use as well as there was no measuring or smell.
There's that bird netting stuff, but it gets tangled in everything. The only good method I know of is an animatronic predator that moves and makes noise. Possibly those motion-detector garden sprayers.
I'm thinking when we settle on getting a deer scarer.
I use this, that way I don’t have to remember to set water out. I bought it with some doubt in my mind, but it works great!

This will get the job done.
Tell the police is was for a cat that kept shitting on your porch.
Well, I have friends and neighbors who offered for free (kids free...and I want to make clear, I love kids, but this is not parents with kids. This is grandparents with kids...sometimes grandparents can be a little more liberal in their dealings with kids). But it's too late now. They'd be super offended if my family friend didn't do it. They already know im crazy about my plants. So they'd assume I found someone I thought could do better, which would be true lol.
Also, in regards to your situation. I just bought these self watering stakes. The small ones only give like 2.5oz a day but they sell xL. Also, Amazon sells these stakes without the reservoir, and instead you use a wine bottle upside down. I can't say how well the first link works...haven't used it yet, but the 2nd link I listed uses about 1/4 of a wine bottle a day.
Also, I've read about taking a milkjug. Putting a hold in the bottom. Keep cap on milk jug. Add rocks to the bottom of jug if you're worried about wind. Then place the filled up milk jug directly on the soil. The theory is that the water will solely drip out of the milk jug.
Like I said, I can't vouch for how any of these work.
Does anyone have experience with this brand? Also, is the fact that I inherited a “hanging basket kit,” render this system useless for a setup like yours?
Go online and look up “(your zip code) gardening zone”. Then seek plants (or planting schedules) for your zone. For example in zone 9 (this is fully incorrect and using as an example) garlic may need to be planted in oct but in your zone it may be December or something like that.
You can get a cheap hose timer and irrigation for the raised bed. I used this kit from amazon for my raised bed.
Peppers and tomatoes are super easy and rather forgiving.
Bonus points if you get nutrients and a feeding schedule!
Motion-activated sprinkler example
We have this one to keep the rabbits out of our flowers. It works at night too.
I’m not sure what they are called exactly. There’s many different types! If you just do a quick search for “plant watering system” you’ll find tons!
Here are the ones in the picture:

When I didn't have a full in-ground sprinkler system, THIS is what I used. Lay the hose down and it will follow it across the yard. It has three speed (Fast, slow, stationary).
