For a soldering kit, I used this one on amazon, it was great practice.
As for a soldering iron, look on ebay/amazon for a "936" soldering iron. Any of them are about the same, most are clones of the famous hakko 936.
The original 936 is too expensive in my opinion, I'm using a sparkfun clone 936 that unfortunately is no longer sold. Most of the other clones should be ok though.
The only think I would really recommend getting legit is a hakko chisel tip, like this one. Don't get those 10pc tip sets, they are cheap and it is much better to use just one good tip than a bunch of bad tips.
Lastly, if you want your tip to last a longer time, don't use a wet sponge, that can damage your tip. Use one of those copper hard brush things, I forget what they are called, but you can buy them at amazon/ebay.
First of all props to you to introduce your son to electronics and ask to find a good method for him to learn it out of interest.
I remember having electronics kits which had a bunch of simple components connected by those metal spring terminals. They often came with booklets to go step by step through simple projects to gain some understanding.
Perhaps you could look at toy shops and see if they carry some educational electronics kits? I remember book shops also sold them though I'm not sure if they'd still.

These look like they're rated pretty well and will ship quickly! Keep in mind there may be a bit of a transition period when you change the buttons for the other set. If you keep the buttons in the same place and order that should help with the transition.
I got mine as a Chrstmas gift. I'm not seeing the exact one that I have on the Arduino website, but here it is on Amazon US. It's a kit with an Arduino, a bunch of parts and components and a book walking you through a bunch of different beginner projects to teach you how everything works. I haven't really dug into it much yet aside from reading through the first project. The packaging and presentation is beautiful though. I was really impressed with the quality of the kit.
Cool project. The soldering should be pretty simple, and it's fairly easy to learn. I would recommend buying a soldering project kit, something silly like this: amazon link that you don't mind messing up and learning on.
This is the kit I ordered from Amazon. Ive seen those elegoo kits and almost got that one because of the better price. From the little research I've done, looks like not all the programs and software work on some of the knock off brands. I'd rather go with the OG kit.

Might be able to purchase it standalone but the projects require the components in the kit.
For me it was playing around with Scratch as a kid. I spent many many hours with it in middle and high school. You can make simple movies or games with it, and it's a lot more accessible and engaging to kids (or adult beginners) than a "real" programming language.
Your kid sounds like she's digging the hardware side of things. When I was a kid my mom bought me a snap circuit kit. I don't remember exactly what one it was but it was something vaguely like this that lets you put together simple circuits to light up bulbs or play sounds or whatever.

It's hard to say without knowing what kind of budget you're working with. If you can, I would stick with a board used by the lightsaber community (arduino nano isn't really used at large) because you will get better community support and better compatibility with additional community made soundfonts that could be added to the saber later.

Dirt wouldn't do this, dirt just prevents pins from making contact, so the whole picture would be cutting in and out. This is 100% an electronic issue.
I would definitely recommend learning to solder, it's pretty fun in my opinion and it can be very useful. An excellent place to start would be watching instructional videos on youtube, and getting a practice board like this. I actually first learned to solder on that exact same kit 10 years ago. You'll need a soldering iron, this one is what I'd recommend, it's a bit pricey but it will actually last unlike the $20 ones you might find elsewhere, you'll need solder (I'd recommend lead solder, it is much easier to work with than lead-free), flux (I recommend a felt-tip flux pen) and solder wick for removing solder.
We got these cheap ones but there are nicer fancier ones too. We would just gauge what the animals wanted and press the button when we gave it to them. Our youngest kitten picked it up quickly. He even uses them to tell us when the dog wants out or when another cat wants food or pets. We really need to get more!
There's not a whole lot of overlap between raspberry pi and what electricians do. My father in law got our kid an electrical kit like this that's closer to electrical type work.
