I use a toddler bumper pillow for the same back support as you and I also have used a finger to unlatch my LO to give the boobies a rest. Now, at 12 months, she unlatches herself and rolls away to sleep, then comes back later to nurse. I also have a few knee pillows that help the hips tremendously. They still hurt, but sometimes I can barely lift a leg to dress myself without them. This one is a bit stiffer and holds the knees more aligned, but doesn’t have the strap. You could absolutely safety pin one on, I just haven’t yet.
I love this one Contour Legacy Leg & Knee Foam Support Pillow - Soothing Pain Relief for Sciatica, Back, Hips, Knees, Joints - As Seen on TV https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MFN8FRT/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_TR5C26Y1YY4C854ZH7KM
You can get like this from Amazon also. I felt more comfortable with it.
Thank you!! It's not easy, but it's worth it! Here's the pillow I have, in case you were curious: https://www.amazon.ca/-/fr/gp/product/B07995B8L1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I love it and it's good quality :)
I got something akin to this. It's bulky and now shoved in a cupboard somewhere - but I found it worth the investment :) Think there's inflatable ones too.
I hate the pregnancy pillow- this type of pillow helped me prevent the kind of pain you describe: Everlasting Comfort Memory Foam Knee Pillow with Adjustable and Removable Leg Strap, White https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07995B8L1/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_V8NWMAYHCQRZSAG3NFQC
I also tried to do stretches like these with some success: https://www.healthline.com/health/pregnancy/sciatica-pain-stretches
I use a bed wedge I got off Amazon, idk if you tried one https://www.amazon.com/Post-Surgery-Elevating-Pillow-Memory/dp/B01MQSDYY9/ref=mp_s_a_1_4/134-2708947-6902238?ie=UTF8&qid=1542655022&sr=1-4&m=A2M2K0XCLN25ZN&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=bed+wedge&dpPl=1&dpID=31J4bbfxi... I also use a pillow between by knees when on my side
I bought a contour pillow for between my legs and my back aches instantly stopped. It was seriously a game changer. Here's the link for anyone interested:
I got advice that the pillow idea didn’t work well, so I bought the below wedge prior to my surgery. It helps to keep your foot elevated and upright. You get sick and tired of always laying on your back with it, so you eventually welcome laying on your side. When I was sick and tired of it, I switched to the bunched up blanket.
I’m starting weight bearing at 6 weeks post-op but I have a tib/fib fracture, I’m wondering if it’s different because the bone’s in your foot? I’m not sure sorry, but I agree that any time NWB feels like forever. I’ve read some articles that potentially starting weight bearing sooner can have good outcomes, but definitely follow your doc’s advice.
This is the elevation pillow I got which I highly recommend: elevation pillow Amazon link
Good luck with your healing journey, we are here for you!!
I’m a side sleeper too. Just got this pillow and I love it so much (sorry, had to copy/paste full link bc mobile being weird)
Yep. Broke mine in April roller skating like a goon. Only just been discharged to go back to sports and things but my tendons are sore from not being used.
Buy one of these if you can: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Light-Ease-Support-Elevation-Surgery/dp/B07GF9FTBV/ref=mp_s_a_1_16?crid=1CONL1JY6BJ25&keywords=leg+pillow&qid=1658651865&sprefix=leg+pillow%2Caps%2C148&sr=8-16
It elevates the leg and keeps it still. I couldn't sleep with the leg raised on a towel or just flat. But this made everything way more comfortable for me. Especially as you'll be lying down for a good 5-8 weeks.
After that do all the exercises. I had stiff tendons for a couple weeks which made walking hell.
I'm also a side sleeper. I wake up every few hours to pee or something, and switch sides, so I'm no always sleeping on one side. I also got a pillow for my knees I can't live without.
I was gifted a knee pillow my first pregnancy and use it frequently. My pregnancy pillow takes up too much room in our bed so I usually opt for hugging a regular pillow and putting the knee pillow between my legs. Could be a nice little gift to yourself.
I recommend going to a chiropractor to get properly adjusted. Also, before you go to bed at night, spend ten minutes doing neck stretches. You can look up neck stretches on YouTube and find some to do. That in itself will help tremendously.
As far as learning to sleep on your back, start off going to sleep that way and every time you wake up, make sure you are on your back.
You could try sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees to align your hips and back. That might help as well. A pillow like this. https://www.amazon.com/Orthopedic-Pillow-Sciatica-Relief-Pregnancy/dp/B07RYNX8B3/
There is a difference for me. I notice I breath much better when I’m laying on my right side. And I usually just put my hands laying palms-up down by my knees. You need to make sure your head and neck are fully supported and parallel to your body so it’s not above or below the rest of your body. I have a very thin pillow beneath my Wamsutta down pillow to give it some support. The pillow between the knees is key too.
I got these two pillows to go between my legs and behind my back, and found that they were much more comfortable than using regular pillows. I also feel less nervous about having them near baby.
Everlasting Comfort Knee Pillow for Sleeping - Prevents Knee Clashing - Hip, Lower Back, Leg, and Sciatic Nerve Pain Relief Pillows for Side Sleepers https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07995B8L1/
Everlasting Comfort Bolster Pillow for Legs and Back - Pure Memory Foam Half Moon Sleeping Pillow https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NPTXTFV/
An alternative is to use a big C shaped pregnancy pillow behind your back and tuck it between your knees, but I needed something that held my legs just a bit further apart.
I just discovered the most amazing back pillow ever. My aunt has one and wanted me to try it and holy crap it's amazing. I ordered one right away. It's from The Cushion Lab.

It's a bit pricey, but since I already tried it, I figured it's worth it.
Other than that, I find supporting my legs helps my back. When I sit in a desk chair, I position the below type of pillow vertically so that my legs can hang on it.

I use a knee pillow and it’s absolutely saved my hips and even my back to some extent. I don’t remember if it was massage or chiropractor that recommended it but boy does it help.

I put my foot as far forward as possible so that my knee is hanging free. It is uncomfortable but necessary for extension
I use 5 pillows as a side sleeper. I'd use 6 if I didn't have an adjustable bed (I adjust the head of the bed up like 10-15 degrees).
One under my head, one for my right forearm to rest on so my elbow isn't in a weird position, one between my left arm and my body, one of these weird pillows between my knees, and another regular pillow between my feet.

Everlasting Comfort Knee Pillow for Sleeping - Prevents Knee Clashing - Hip, Lower Back, Leg, and Sciatic Nerve Pain Relief Pillows for Side Sleepers
I didn’t get on with using the huge u shaped body pillow, so I used a knee orthopaedic pillow which really helped side sleeping on my back and hips positioning https://www.amazon.ca/Everlasting-Comfort-Memory-Adjustable-Removable/dp/B07995B8L1/ref=asc_df_B07995B8L1/?tag=googlemobshop-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312730485250&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=12505179094913975997&hvpone=&hvptwo...
