I need a new desk chair, which is pretty important to me because I work from home. I've already been to my local university surplus several times and I wasn't impressed with their selection. I'm thinking about something ordering something online like the Amazon Basics executive chair. I don't even know what I'm looking for, to be honest. Or maybe a mesh back chair like this? Honestly, I'm pretty clueless. I would love suggestions on either specific chairs, or what to look for in general.

Here’s the Amazon link to the exact chair I got. I’m a bigger dude, 6’ 220lbs and this chair adjusts perfectly to put me in proper position
Friend of mine 6’5 uses this since last year and is happy with it but as always YMMV

Just get this bad boy off of amazon.
I got it a few months ago it is great.
I can't seem to find the exact model, but it's pretty similar to this one.
I highly recommend it if you spend a lot of time in front of the computer.

Did you read my post? I'm not looking for a gaming chair. I'm looking for something with a soft bottom.
This looks soft, but I feel like it would break in a couple days Also looks tiny, I'm 5'10" 200-210lbs.
That's why I'm looking for suggestions.
I owned a Hyken for a couple of years based on the overwhelming positive reviews I saw for it here and on YouTube.
That being said, the chair was great for about three months then the mesh started stretching and everything went downhill afterwards.
Considering what I know now about the Hyken, I would naturally recommend checking out the Markus instead.
Though one caveat that is a must have for my spec is the ability to have adjustable armrests, something the Markus doesn't look like it has (from a quick glance on their site).
A friend of mine recently got this one with a lower budget and says it's really good.
I bought myself this one two years ago. Looks like the price has gone up since then but it's been serving me pretty well. Every once in a while the back position lock will give out and the headrest is useless (as is the norm) but otherwise I'm pleased.
Probably not since that chair is $250, at least it is in the US. At that point you'd be better off getting the Razer chair. I'd look at a cheap padded office chair like this, for example
I got this chair a june 6, 2020, and it's held up great and is generally quite comfortable. Definitely well built with a lot of adjustment, recline, headrest, and a wide seat base. The only problem is I don't have much asscheek and the padding doesn't cut it for me anymore so i had to get another seat cushion to put on it.
If you don't like mesh then there's that potential factor becoming an issue, but i prefer it because i can stay cool.
If the padding was just an inch thicker with a 1" taller back i would have actually preferred it to a herman Miller. I'm 6'1" 200lbs.
Duramont Ergonomic Office Chair - Adjustable Desk Chair with Lumbar Support and Rollerblade Wheels - High Back Chairs with Breathable Mesh - Thick Seat Cushion, Head, and Arm Rests - Reclines https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0797HZ8W1/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_TG9SDTYMCGA9SK16696K?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
It’s pretty solid. I got it on a auction site for $40, so definitely a steal on $330. I wish the seat part was more cushy, why I need the extra support pad there
There are a lot of nice looking task chairs on Amazon in the $150-$500 range. Judging by the reviews they dont start getting durable and reliable until the $300ish range.
Something like this for instance looks like it would last a while if you don't mind paying $400
if you're around 5'9" then this chair will be extremely good for your back. I myself suffer back pain but this chair fixed it all and it looks quite good (the grey one):

Girlfriend bought this chair for herself. It's easily as good as as my Ergochair 2 that was ~$500. Arguably better if you prefer a mesh seat.
This is a great chair that I got recently. I removed the lumbar support and replaced it with a pillow and I put some aloudy cushions on the armrests and now it's very comfortable.
whatever you do, stay away from "gaming chairs" which provide nothing but lumbar pain.

Drilled some holes in the plastic back, added a metal reinforcement plate (probably not needed) on the inside part of the seat that the headrest bolts through along with the plastic. The results are pretty good.

For people who dislike Herman Miller chairs, I recommend this Duramont chair with adjustable everything. Herman Miller chairs are too low-backed for me, and I hate the arm rests - the Duramont shape is a better fit for my body and took very few adjustments to get right.
Duramont with adjustable everything. I've long used some of the cheaper suggestions on Amazon but was getting really sore after sitting in them for longer periods of time during WFH, probably in large part due to bad posture - but they generally have seats that lose their bounce after several hours of continuous use, and minimal back support.
The high back on the Duramont means you get an actually usable neck rest and much better back support. The seat is comfortable for 12+ hours. Adjustable arms are non-negotiable, IMO, and the shape of these armrests has a nice cradle for you to rest on. I like this chair so much I replaced all our desk chairs with it after a few weeks of use.
I have used most Herman Miller chairs and this one knocks them out of the park at a fraction of the price, imo - but I low-key hate Herman Millers and literally prefer hard wood chairs. For me, Herman Millers are far too low backed for day-long use in front of a desk, and the armrests are incomprehensibly shaped. I'd look through some catalogs and try to identify what you've like in the office in the past - once I realized I never had a nice high-backed chair and figured out my issues with the Herman Millers, it was an easy to find a chair with the features I wanted!
This one but there’s plenty of variations on this style on Amazon. Love it. I love this chair. I've had it for a year now. No foot rest. I wanted the mesh seat over cushion.
It looks okay to me but I don’t own it so I can’t personally say so. I use this bad baby
I’m pretty sure it’s this one
I ordered it a few months back and returned it literally the next day, very uncomfortable and should cost around 50$ instead of 300$
Don’t go cheap. Buy something you won’t regret and will help your back and butt. This thing saved my back for real.

I didn't want a "gaming chair" (I don't really like the aesthetic of them), and I needed something to support my (at the time), shall we say "impressive physique"
Now I've lost a fair lot of weight, but it's good to know that this chair will last me awhile as long as I keep up with maintaining/dropping weight.

This is what I got once we went work at home. It's excellent and I have spent 8-10 hours a day for over a year in it.
LINK to my chair that I use for both gaming and office work. I love this thing so much and it is a fraction of the price of either a Racer style gamer chair or a HM Aeron. I have had it for about a year now and it is still just like new. In fact I loved this chair so much I convinced my boss to buy a few for the office and now all 5 of the guys who work in my department have gone out and bought their own.
So no, these threads aren't just lol $1500 chair > $650 chair, they are pointing out that Racers are just bad chairs and not worth the money.
I have a $240 office chair that decimates gaming chairs in terms of comfort and quality.
It is full mesh, has a head rest, full lumbar support, adjustable arms, and costs $100 less than some of the cheaper racer style gaming chairs. This thing is an absolute work horse and being full mesh the cushin won't just wear out on you the same way foam does. All in all anyone who buys a racer style chair is in it for the looks not the functionality.

I bought this one with fold up arms for the same reason.
The seat is a touch narrow for my wide self, but tolerable. It shipped with traditional casters and skate wheels; the lowest height with the skates on is still pretty high. I like it but I'm tall.
I bought this one before the pandemic really hit. It was about cheaper then but it's a great chair
I'm missing two discs in my lower back, so lumbar support was a must. I was going to get a RTX racing chair but after trying one out was surprised how uncomfortable it was . I went instead with an ergonomic office chair; and it's been great. I got skinny legs, a bony butt, and spend the greater part of most days in this chair. It treats me right.
I bought this chair to upgrade my work from home situation. It's pretty awesome, best office chair I've used
Big fan of the Fern and my favorite when compared with the Aeron or Leap V2 which I've also owned. Wish it came with a headrest but I plan on strapping a $20 Lorell one somehow to bring it all together.
Not sure of that. They are rather weak. I change my chairs nearly all three years.
Well, not true, I will change my actual unit (very similar) and it only have two years. It cannot even bend to a decent angle for my comfort.
I needed a chair last march as well and ended up with this this.
There are several other comparable chairs on amazon in addition to that one as well.
Hi, I just bought a leap and I'm waiting for it to arrive. Also from Canada! So do you think you would recommend this version of the headrest that some other people in this thread seemed to use? https://www.amazon.ca/Lorell-LLR60329-Executive-Adjustable-Headrest/dp/B00YE30HT8/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=lorell+headrest&qid=1611863934&sr=8-2

It seems like it might be a bit less invasive. Also, I believe that it uses the exact same attachment, so you might be able to buy this one and replace it with the one you have in the exact same drilled holes. Edit: FYI, I am 5 foot 11 inches.
I just bought that one. Hope it's good.
The other one I was looking at is the Duramont chair. It has the cushioned seat and adjustable lumbar, but I actually didn't want the cushioned seat (reviews say it's hard and firm, so might not be ideal for sitting on legs), so I went with the Gabrylly.
NOUHAUS Ergo3D Ergonomic Office Chair
im pretty tall so I wanted something that sat higher than most chairs. This on can sit pretty high on the highest adjustment level

That’s the one I bought. Super comfy
Here is the chair I use. I’m 6’0 and 180 lbs and have no problem with long gaming sessions and worst comes to worst and your experience is the complete opposite of mine and you’re only out 1/4 of your budget though I doubt that will happen.
I am thinking about getting the Amazon Basics High Back Executive Chair is that good? My budget is basically a $150.
my friend had a chair that I liked and said he got it on amazon. I bought what looked like his chair and he confirmed it was the same chair. However, it wasn't the same, sort of a knock off. still very comfortable and soft. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00XBC3BF0/ref=sxr_rr_xsim_1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=3397508887125430297&pd_rd_wg=mTpGj&pf_rd_r=Z39K0ZC402TERYYVV980&pf_rd_s=desktop-rhs-carousels&pf_rd_t=301&pd_rd_i=B00XBC3BF0&pd_rd_w=o...
Just get the Amazon basics office chair at least its "better" than this.
But my momma always said never cheap out on the things that connects you to the ground (shoes, tires, socks, chairs, bed) and following her advice I just got a refurbished steelcase leap v2 for like $200.
Thanks! It is the NOUHAUS Ergo3D chair, I've had it for almost a year, it has been a great chair. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07L4ZH59Y/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I've also been thinking about this one too. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0797HZ8W1/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_SD4kFbH908CJN
These are my top 3 after days of online looking. Probably need to go sit my butt in some but I'm super paranoid about indoor stores and catching Rona.
I know Herman Millers and Steel cases are highly recommended and can buy them used and whatnot. I just can't convince my wife I need to spend that much and wonder why someone would sell a good office chair unless there was something wrong with it, regardless of how good the brand is.
I bought this chair for my MCAT FLs and study sessions (7-8 hrs of sitting) and it was honestly great. I have a history of really bad back pain and this chair held up. And it’s not too much of a splurge either!
I have a steelcase criterion manufactured in 1998 that I picked up from a used office supply store probably 7 or 8 years ago, and it's still going strong. I actually just bought a brand new chair to replace it for $313 on amazon (only because the steelcase is purple, and my wife hates the color), and I'm not sure I'm going to keep this new duromont. It's a decent, heavily built chair for the most part, but feels so much less substantial than my 22 yr old steelcase...
Here's the chair I just bought, totally solid chair for the money, I just didn't realize how good I had it until I sat in the new one for the first time after putting together this afternoon: https://www.amazon.com/Duramont-Ergonomic-Adjustable-Support-Rollerblade/dp/B0797HZ8W1
Also here is the old steel case for reference, it might be slightly bigger or higher end than the one you featured? Hard to be sure via the photo: https://photos.app.goo.gl/3jitA7kjAKhd2YWY7
I have found a solution that I am going to try out for myself and will post the results here if you would like.
Basically you can buy a generic headrest that screws into an office chair but obviously we wouldn't want to do that to a nice chair like the Leap. So you can get a pair of C Clamps with it that fit the same size as the screws for the headrest and use those to attach it to your chair.
The only concerns I have are that it will be too far back to actually offer any head/neck support but I think I could figure out a way to adjust it somehow.
Here's the products I'm ordering from Amazon (Canada)
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00YE30HT8/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A2T3CA2GEPZF2K&psc=1
Hey there, did you end up going with one of these?
I've been considering the NOUHAUS Ergo3D, WordPro Quantum, and a Duramont chair on Amazon.
5'10" 150lbs. Lumbar support is important.
Ok so I got this from Amazon and it isn’t the worst but overtime it really isn’t comfortable I know it isn’t really ideal but I would suggest saving
Is that that ikea chair for like $50? I got rid of mine after like one week. It made my back hurt. I ended up getting one from amazon instead, and got the rollerblade chairs.
What do you think about this chair for example?
I just want an cheaper alternative to the Herman Miller Aeron, even the local used market wants same as new prices. Closest I can find is this for $250.
I do. I am currently on the office depot one.
When i got the chair for christmas, I was about 320 or so.
Over the summer, I have dumped soda and started eating healthier and making my own cooked meals, and I am now under 295. HOWEVER, the damage to this chair's ass cushion has been done lol...
I am currently looking at THIS model of chair and it looks VERY similar to the Aeron.
I have found several Aeron chairs in my area, however, everyone seems to be selling them for $300 or more and almost all of them being sold are over 8 and 10 years old, with one of them being over 12 years old he says...I cant justify spending that much on a chair that has been in someone's possession than my relationship...
However, Being that I live so close to Grand Rapids and Holland, MI, there are Haworth and Steelcase 'outlet' stores right where the factories are that I didnt even think of checking out...I kinda wanna go there or ask around but have yet to find anyone who has been to these stores or have had any luck either.
Ultimately, I dont think I am going to go with a gaming chair (was considering the EWin or Secret Lab Titan) because I feel like ill get more comfortable seating out of an Aeron or Gesture or clone of such...
It's so comfy. If you're looking for a chair that's still a gaming chair, but that doesn't look like that I would suggest something like this maybe? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LXXM5EK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_fxRFDbGDG988R
The one's at the office are cheap ones - they look like this.
BestOffice Office Chair Desk Ergonomic Swivel Executive Adjustable Task Computer High Back Chair with Back Support in Home, 1, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004ZVHKJE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_y7V1CbRP3PZB9
I’ve had this guy for 4 years and love it, paid $100 at the time
Nope. Not sure what's special about overpriced, shitty Chinese car seats bolted to a rolling chair base. That's just me though, I know plenty of people find them comfortable. I find they get pretty hot and sweaty though depending on the material. The cheap vinyl stuff, for sure, makes you sweat and it's gross. Also, easier for my cat's to accidental tear. Or purposely scratch.
I use the mesh style office chairs. It's nice having a fan on your back and butt in the warm summer months. Or heat in the winter. Not this one exactly, but it looks pretty much like this: https://www.amazon.com/NOUHAUS-Ergo3D-Ergonomic-Office-Chair/dp/B07L4ZQMDX/
I have the amazon basics office chair and it's relatively comfortable.
A little pricey but I HAD to buy this after sitting on it at a friend's place. It is the comfiest desk chair I've ever sat on. I've been using it for 2+ years and it has yet to let me down.
Just bought one recently with your exact criteria off amazon. Took me like 20 minutes to assemble and is super comfortable for the price.
https://www.amazon.com/Furmax-Ergonomic-Executive-Computer-Headrest/dp/B01LXXM5EK
Then I recommend an office chair. For $250 you could definitely find a very nice one. I have one as simple as this and found it much better more comfy and longer lasting than a $130 gaming chair that had peeling leather in just 1 year.
This is what I was thinking. I'm 6'1 or so, I think it would work but I don't know for sure. If I may, what would the negatives be to me having a desk where it would be too high for my legs?
Not sure if it's this exact one, but almost identical
To be honest, I cheaped out on my gaming chair and just went with the $100 Amazonbasics high back executive chair. I'm really glad I did because it's actually a great chair. Nothing fancy like lumbar support but it is adjustable in a couple ways but most importantly it's still comfortable after two years with no signs of wear. I'm at my desk for at least 4 hours a day (sometimes 12) either gaming or working on my degree so it's gotten the rounds. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00XBC3BF0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_2ZIWAbHCS6CM8
I'm 6'7", 255, also lean... Haha.
I bought this chair back in 2012 and love it.
My brother at 6'3" has sat in it and his feet couldn't even touch the floor when it is up all the way (where I keep it). I notice it has a bunch of negative reviews on Amazon now, but I have had no problems with this whatsoever.
Best of luck in your search.

I have that one. I really like it. Very comfortable and decent price
It is nearly identical to this one (minus the flip up arms): https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-High-Back-Executive-Chair-Black/dp/B00XBC3BF0/ref=pd_sim_196_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=K7SDP5XJAFTFSHPXP4XB
Check out the Amazon Basics high back chair. AmazonBasics High-Back Executive Chair - Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00XBC3BF0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_qUqXzb32K0W56
I have the Mid-Back version because I have back problems. But it has been a good chair so far. Adequately soft and tilts which is hard to find in that price range. Handrests are not adjustable but most ppl don't need it anyway.
Probably one of the most recommended chairs for under $100. Super comfortable and decent to assemble.
I'm still shopping around myself, in the same pricepoint. Here are two that have been suggested to me:
