I got this one on Amazon a couple of years ago and it still serves me well. Quite a bit cheaper than Ippodo but it doesn't have the cloth or the matcha. If you just want a high quality set without the extras it's a good option.
yeah a whisk is definitely needed unless you do cold brew which you can pour into a bottle and shake.
the key is usually to get a set which includes a bowl, whisk, spoon, and hopefully a whisk holder
You will want to do about 1 full scoop and a half scoop of the tea spoon (1.5)
and the key is to pour enough hot water just to cover a little under 1/4 of the bowl
The BambooWorx on Amazon has over 8,500 five star reviews 👍
It came with my matcha set from Amazon Bamboo Matcha Tea Whisk Set (Chasen) Matcha Bowl (Chawan) Bamboo Scoop (Chashaku) Ceramic Whisk Holder Handmade Matcha Ceremony Starter Kit For Traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony (7 Pcs). https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PLLC97D/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_TN9YFbMT8EX67?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
You don't have to pay for shipping from Japan. If you are in the US, Ippodo has great matcha and free shipping for orders over $39. They are actually a company out of Japan but they have a front in the US.
This is the matcha set I got and I really like it: https://www.amazon.com/Chashaku-Handmade-Ceremony-Traditional-Japanese/dp/B07PLLC97D/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=matcha+set&qid=1605891381&s=home-garden&sr=1-5

Apparently it's been so long I didn't even know they'd strictly moved to bottled stuff. There was never one near me here in bumbfuck wv so I only saw one when I went out of state. Either way here's a set for $10 of the whisk and scoop and a link the buy the tea for like $5
this chawan. I always struggle to justify expensive teaware purchases when i think about how much tea I could buy for that price, but it sure is tempting
That's kind of vague tbh. Unless you're buying a mass produced product or common commodity there is no 'normal' price. It's like asking what the normal cost of a car is. There's a lot of variation in the cost depending on who made it, how it's made and where it's sold. Additionally, "something decent and nice but not expensive" is dependent on perspective. Maybe a $100 set is decent, but compared to a $300 set it's not exorbitantly expensive.
I'm sure if you went to a department store you could find something not too expensive. It would be functional, maybe mass produced but not much different than if you ordered one from Amazon probably. If you want something a bit more personalized, then you'll have to go to a specialty store and then you'll probably have a range of equipment and prices depending on the craftsmanship.
I mean you could buy one on Amazon for $40, but I assume if you want to buy it in Japan then you want something more unique or hand crafted?
I wanted to get into matcha and wanted a kit. I found this set by MatchaDNA on Amazon. What do you guys think? All of the reviews are close in time with each other so I'm wondering if it's a new product or these were paid reviews.
Also posted this on 4/5 but it looks like this is the new thread.
