I would very much recommend getting the light houses mounted on the wall or using this Support System. I found the tripods wobble the tiniest bit as you walk around and if you are sensitive this can be really nauseating. The supports I linked don't leave any marks and are much more stable. Plus they give you a little extra room compared to the tripods.
Edit: You will need these to mount the base stations on the support beams if you use them Clamps.
I just got an IV pole for mine, I can wheel it around, and it's nice and sturdy, and the height is adjustable.
My solution: support rods & clamp mounts
Easy setup / take down, with no damage to the walls. Yes, it does mean I have "safety orange" construction support rods in my living room... but it seems to blend nicely with my "decor".
red fit my room you might want a dif color
For those who would rather just throw money at the problem, here are products you can buy from Amazon to get to a similar setup without having to DIY anything:
FastCap 3rd Hand Support System 57-to-144-Inches, 2-pack #3HAND5
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000067S12/
Smallrig® Cool Ballhead Arm V4 Multi-function Double Ball Adapter with Bottom Clamp & Standard 1/4" Screw - 1138

Props for a good low cost solution, though!
If you are renting and can't screw into walls, a lot of people are using posts that get clamped between the floor and ceiling and then use a little camera adapter mounted to that.
Link (might not be the best, but first ones I found on Amazon)
Hmm, I haven't investigated this in a while, but I like the idea of bracing the floor and ceiling. Do you mean something like this? How do the sensors mount onto the poles?

(I imagine HTC will talk about this sometime before they sell these to people, right?)
I use a couple of 3rd hand jacks with camera rig mounts
Works great, no holes in the walls of my rental
I didn’t use tripods but instead the expandable poles used for holding up sheet rock. So they have pads against the floor and ceiling and then you can mount the lighthouse up high in the corners.
FastCap 3rd Hand Support System 57-to-144-Inches, 2-pack #3HAND5 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000067S12/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_8QCN4F1XMF9S40NK13RB
Tripods should work but if you bump them you’ll need to recalibrate, so something more fixed would be better.
I thought most had the ability to magnetically attach to something? In any case, I picked up these 3rd hands back in 2016 and they've been surprisingly useful to have around. https://smile.amazon.com/FastCap-Support-System-144-Inches-3HAND5/dp/B000067S12
If your ceilings are not too high you can get spring-loaded poles that fit between the floor and ceiling, and then use camera clamps to attach the lighthouse boxes to those.
I went with option 1. I got a set of these in a 2-pack: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000067S12
It has black rubber feet so I put some of those big felt pads you put under furniture so it shouldn't mark the ceiling. Even with the felt, they are sturdy enough so as long as you don't yank or fall into them, they aren't going anywhere.
If you search for something like "camera clamp" or "flash clamp", you'll find big versions of what look like bag clips that are threaded for the lighthouses. Its a pretty standard thread size for most camera hardware.

I've had the ones everyone else has posted in here, these are the best. You are able to pin them tightly between floor and ceiling and it literally does not budge. Has been amazing.
Contractor poles just get a mount for the base stations that fits on them, I use a bicycle camera mount, floor to ceiling, harder to trip on than a tripod and much smaller profile. I wrapped mine in electrical tape cause I didn't like the color.
A typical solution from the original Vive days is to use "contractor poles" which clamp between the floor and ceiling. You can put the poles anywhere (assuming your ceiling is low enough) and then use a clamping camera mount on the pole. The lighthouses should have threaded holes for a camera mount just like the Oculus cameras (the 1st generations ones definitely did).
I have a CV1 and a Vive and have been using poles for both of them. BTW I tried some cheap clamps at first but they sagged over time, so I ended up switching to RAM and Manfrotto mounts which are definitely not cheap but have held their placement for years.
They're a bit more expensive, but as I'm in an appartment where I cant mount anything to the walls, I use these: https://www.amazon.com/FastCap-Support-System-144-Inches-3HAND5/dp/B000067S12/ref=sr_1_1?crid=7Z9MYTVP9FZJ&keywords=3rd+hand+support+system&qid=1549660856&sprefix=3rd+hand%2Caps%2C207&sr=8-1 (along with some pose-able mounts)
Might want to look into getting ceiling brace poles, that's what I did and then got clamps to mount the base stations to the poles.
Here's the poles: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000067S12/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
These are the clamps: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CSMCPKQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The IV pole was not quite $30 and the Snuggle Hose is $13.95 plus shipping. So $45ish.
These for indoors, outdoors I have some really crappy K-stands I got with a lighting kit.
I use the contractor poles and it works really well. I made one of those posts in past lol. They are called 3rd hand supports. You also need to get some gopro mounts that attach to a bike.
https://www.amazon.com/FastCap-Support-System-144-Inches-3HAND5/dp/B000067S12
while i don't know what a tension pole is, what i use works great and sounds like a tension pole: https://smile.amazon.com/FastCap-Support-System-144-Inches-3HAND5/dp/B000067S12/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1483600734&sr=8-5&keywords=third+hand
Have you considered a contractor pole? You can also use cheap sand bags. In terms of filler, you can get cheap playground sand for $5/bag, but I recommend spending just a few dollars more and get pebbles instead. Place whatever you decide to fill the sandbags with inside gallon size ziplog bags. These extra steps help to avoid getting sand and dust everywhere.
Ah, I see what you were going for. That seems like a pretty good method. I ended up going with these bad boys: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000067S12/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. They offered the best height range for the price.
Cool. If you don't want to put holes in your place a lot of people use tripods or support bars like this one https://www.amazon.com/FastCap-Support-System-144-Inches-3HAND5/dp/B000067S12?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00
If you had enough money to spend on a Vive then spend a little more on these extension poles and clamps. Like me I guarantee you will be happy that you went the extra mile as you will no longer be restricted in mounting them, nor will you lose space like you would with tripods and your Vive will gain portability. They have longer ones if you have high ceilings as well also check out our ~~wiki for other mounting solutions~~ just kidding where the fuck did that page for it go?
Or... you can get extension poles?
And they are just... sitting on drawing easels? So you buy an 800$ product and have the sensors placed somewhere precariously? Come on bro, we have a page somewhere full of mounting solutions, google it.
Not the wiki a few users created but another post I grabbed just searching.
