You can add a filter to a homemade mask by cutting up an AC filter, or by adding more layers of fabric. Or you can buy surgical masks on Amazon and at Walmart.
Is it as effective as an N95? No, but it certainly gives you more protection than going out barefaced.
Here are some disposable masks in stock on Amazon, $30 for a pack of 50. I received mine, cut one apart and confirmed they are 3 layers with the center one being a melt blown cloth filter.

I liked the Korean version better. This was the only one that fit my small lower jaw before surgery. I tried other brands but they were too big.

One of the toddler KF94s the sub highly recommends is one from The Bio so that would be a good one to test.
I’ve only ever bought them from Kollecte, but I looks like there’s at least one seller on Amazon. Note that the cool thing about these masks is the way the ear loops are adjustable (see the last pic on that Amazon listing for a poor illustration).
You can choose a preschool where the teachers and staff are all masked and vaccinated, and that all kids above 2 wear masks. You can also make sure your kid wear a high-quality mask. They can be hard to find for you g kids, but the You and I KF94 mask is what we've been using for our 3 year old, and I thi k it fits well. There are a bunch of people selling this mask on and off Amazon for a variety of prices, so don't just follow that link.
If you want cloth ones, definitely check Etsy. The ones I bought for my toddler were from the seller Greamace22 and I am very happy with them.

Its more about protecting from potential splashes from other people and said splashes that can contain germs and viruses. I have been using these as they are the closest to an FDA surgical mask. The point being, by taking it off around possible carriers, I could have been shouted at closely with a lot of splatter and my mask was not protecting from said splatter because it was in my hand.

Halyard makes a non fluid shield procedure mask. I used to wear them outside at the park. I believe they’re two layers when you cut them open. I know they’re very thin like tissue paper and not nearly as water resistant as the fluid shield ones. O&M Halyard actually sells directly on Amazon. I’ve bought multiple packs of their other fluid shield surgical masks for outdoor use and been pleased with quality.

I want the mask mandate to be lifted so bad for gyms at least. In the meantime, I just purchased these and they have been life changing to be able to wear them while working out at the gym. Hope this helps! :)

As a kludge, you can put a small piece of tape where it wears. If it's rough on your nose, you might use "moleskin", a special kind of tape which is soft and cushions – conventionally used right on the skin to protect from blisters. You could put a little patch on the inside of the mask.
I had mine done at the beginning of April and found these on Amazon and they are great! They keep your mask off the piercing directly. Apparently you can "hook" them in, but I just place them directly under a cloth mask and they work just fine and stay in place.
Have you tried one of these? Might be beneficial in your case
