Description: This is a fantastic automatic that can be had for as little as $40 if you catch it on sale. It's on the small side at 37mm diameter, 11mm thickness, and comes with an 18mm canvas strap that matches the dial color. It has a hardlex crystal, display case back, day/date complication, luminous hands and hour markers, 30m water resistance and a blasted steel finish.
my vote goes for the solar version
So you're the reason the SNK809 is $103 on Amazon and I had to buy mine from some sketchy website...
This one is also on sale and a lot smaller for people who don’t like big watches. Citizen Men's Eco-Drive Stainless Steel Watch with Day/Date display, BM8180-03E https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000EQS1JW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_zsulDb8Q8CMWK
Citizen Eco Drive BM8180-03E Quartz, so it's accurate and robust. Solar powered, so it's maintenance free. A 37mm case size to fit a younger wrist. 100 meters water resistant, so it's safe for pool, beach or shower. A good tough no-nonsense, yet still good looking watch, perfect for a 15 year old
You could go with the ever fashionable Casio Calculator Watch. Not sure if you wanted something with more functionality, but it should be able to do the conversions for you.
It's the gay illuminati injecting their homosexuality into our think sponges! But you can stop it with this stylish hat.
Price: $40-$45 ($69.95 MSRP)
Movement: quartz, digital
Style: sports
Size: 48.9 x 42.8 x 13.4mm (specs from Casio's website)

Description:
Basic quartz model (battery will probably last 2-3 years), 200m WR. One of the cheaper G-Shocks, which are the gold standard for watches that can take abuse and beatings.
I have a Casio DW5600-E. They're bullet proof.
Price: $375-$400
Movement: 6R15 automatic, hand-winding, hacking
Style: Casual/outdoors
Size: 38mm
Similar models: SARB013 in cream and SARB015 in black.
Description: Another great Seiko in this price range, and a sub favourite. The green sunburst dial with gold markings is just stunning. The inner rotating compass bezel is more stylish than useful but, like the cathedral hands, just fits with the coherent overall theme - it's not called the Alpinist for nothing. 50 hour power reserve, great lume, 200m WR, sapphire crystal, and all the build quality and accuracy you expect from Seiko in this price range. Looks good on a bracelet but, to my mind, best on a brown leather strap. The latest in a line with a strong history as well - there are some really nice vintage Alpinist models out there.
Casio Duro MDV106
Price: ~$45-50
Movement: Japanese quartz ( no model found )
Style: Diver
Size: 44 mm (without crown)
Link: Amazon
Description: The price tag says beater watch, but the fit and finish do not. It looks way better than a watch at this price point should. I like the quiet of a mechanical, but this might the quietest analog quartz watch I have ever heard. The 120 click unidirectional bezel operates smoothly. The most noteworthy thing I dislike is the date window is small and the date seem too recessed and a bit hard to read. The big surprise was the hacking second hand, which is not a feature I expect on a watch under $150.
The Seiko SNK is an awesome automatic watch for under $100 and you don’t have to feel like you are wearing a lie.
Citizen Eco-Drive BM8180-03E quartz, 100m water resistant, and solar powered. A good simple rugged daily watch, that can keep up with a 13 year old boy, yet still be stylish when he's older. And at 37.5mm case size, it would not be huge on a young wrist, nor too small as he gets older.
EDIT; If he is bigger, here is a similar watch, the BM8478-01L. It's also a solar powered quartz, with 100m WR, but it is larger at, 42mm case size.
These are still all cheaper on Amazon.
The current one I own:
Is your friend a watch enthusiast? If not, he might be better off with a quartz watch. They are more accurate, less delicate and less overall hassle compared to an auto.
Citizen BM8180-03E Solar powered, so it doesn't require battery changes, and 100m water resistance, so it's safe for pool, beach or shower. If you don't like that particular model, Citizen and Seiko both make various solar powered models.
But why do that, when you can buy $100,000 watch for $66.29?
Wow... that's an amazing price at Target! I still see it at the normal $40 to $45 at Amazon ... but their pricing is very dynamic.
$25 would normally be a really good price for a used DW5600E-1V... I recommend the OP wait until January and make someone very happy then.
Something like a Seiko SNK809 would be a good fit as well if you'd prefer an automatic watch around that size (37mm)
> I'm thinking of the stories people tell about their dad's who wore their watches from the boardroom to cutting grass. I love Seiko's btw.
In that case, the choice is easy. The Seiko SARB017 "Alpinist" is my favourite watch of all time and is built for the 'gentleman adventurer'. It wears like a sporty dress watch and incredibly versatile due to its depth rating, diashock system and sapphire crystal.
HERE is the amazon link to said beauty.
You looking for an analog? Or a digital? Honestly, I think a nice cheap G Shock is the most utilitarian for a frugal wrist. You can set it to 24-hr time easily and it won't get wonky with seconds (if lives depend on it) something like this. That said, if you're looking for analog, Vostok makes some affordable GMTs. Vostok is a Russian watch company with an interesting history. If the crown wiggles on you, it's not a flaw but a feature to prevent stem damage. Read up on Vostok and see if it's something you might be interested in.
Still not entirely sure why everyone has such a love affair with the Alpinist, but buying it with a warranty is still (for the moment) an option.

This Sieko (in black) seems be a popular choice around here. Just checking their whole selection seems that Amazon has a very different choice of Popular Watches; mainly brands as Fossil, Nautica, Casio and Citizen.
Sorry if it isnt very useful! Maybe youll find something you will like.
Casio MDV-106, $45 on Amazon. Potentially the best dive watch under $50 in my opinion. If you can afford to shell out an extra $10, get a 22mm NATO strap to go with it.
I've got the same watch, it feels and looks really nice, especially considering the price. Right now I have a black and gray NATO style nylon strap on it, which I like better than the rubber one. I think it would look really nice with a steel bracelet though. If you look at the customer product images on the Amazon page there are several of it with different bands: https://www.amazon.com/Casio-MDV106-1AV-Analog-Watch-Black/dp/B009KYJAJY
Seiko 5 automatic with green band is $60 on Amazon. Fantastic watch. They have different colors as well.

Edit: also, just check Amazon for Seiko canvas or Citizen canvas. Tons of great options and well under your budget, the all black Citizen ecodrive looks amazing, might have to get myself one
I'm currently getting openwater certified right now but I bought a Casio MDV-106. It's water resistant to 200m and its a nice watch just to wear anyway and it's like $50 on amazon. I've only been on 3 not very long or deep dives but so far it has worked for me.
I’d suggest the Casio Duro, it has a more classic design then the G-shock but from my experience it’s just as durable. Plus it’s half the price, and it can dress up to be a more formal watch as well, where the G-shock is a little garish to do so.

I know you said less than $100... but this one I've had a couple years and it's fantastic. The solar means I don't have to change the battery and it's atomic so it updates the time automatically. I actually gave my Apple watch to my wife and started wearing this one again for the simplicity of not having to charge every single device I carry.
Finally decided to retire my faithful old G-Shock, which survived two years of high school, college, basic training, and SERE school with nary a scratch or a malfunction.
Initially I was looking at the Bulova Moon Watch (as a temporary measure until I save up for a Speedmaster), but this Timex caught my eye on Amazon, had good reviews on this subreddit, and (most importantly) was $45. Ordered it almost immediately.
One thing to note: The Amazon page shows this model with the white numbers and letters. As you can (hopefully) see, mine is the version with the amber numbers and letters. Minor setback as I wanted the white one, but it still looks excellent. Also: this band is nice. Real leather, nice and comfortable.
