Wait'll you get prep bowls.
Edit: I use these, in case anyone is wondering.
I believe they actually did reduce prices though, at least when compared with inflation. Current pyrex is really cheap, you can get a set of three medium sized mixing bowls for barely over $10 on Amazon right now: https://www.amazon.com/Pyrex-Prepware-3-Piece-Glass-Mixing/dp/B00LGLHUA0/ref=sr_1_25?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1482355882&sr=1-25&keywords=pyrex.
Mixing bowls are awesome.
I got these from amazon and they are great.
It makes it really easy to marinate / mix stuff. If you don't have bowls in your kitchen, you wouldn't understand.
I typically dump four chicken breasts into a medium bowl, dump some sauces in there (bbq, salad dressing, homemade sauce from a smaller bowl) mix it around with my hands, and let it sit while the oven preheats.
Throw them titties in the oven, wash the bowl, and we're done.
Makes coating / mixing seasoning a breeze. I use them for veggies too, cut the veggies up, toss them into the bowl, salt+pepper and oil, mix with my hands, and we're pretty much done.
Super quick, super easy, straightforward to clean up.
Anyways, bowls: reusable, hemispherical, shiny, a great solution for all of your mixing needs.

Right right.
Saw this and was interested where something like this could be picked up.
Turns out, it appears to be a rather expensive set from Joseph Joseph sold for ~$50 from their site and Target's.
Checked Amazon and it appears that it's available for a bit less on Amazon. Check it out, if like me, you were interested: https://www.amazon.com/Joseph-40031-Measuring-Dishwasher-Multicolored/dp/B006BSBRWK
There are large mixing bowls that have lids! I love my set like this but you could probably find a single. Also great for making, serving, and storing big salads. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0161EG5IE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_CzsfFb80RNEG3
I bought these 4 years ago, and I can honestly say I use them every single time I cook. Good range of sizes, easy to clean, stack nicely, and great for holding ingredients your prepping to cook.
I use it for breading fish as well

The Anchor Hocking version is embossed letters. My mom's is probably 40 years old and still fine. You can find them with lids now, but mine doesn't have one.

If I was trying to recreate the look, I'd shop in the cooking/dinnerware aisle and find a clear glass mixing bowl set or cereal bowl set and replant something in it with new gravel/substrate. It seems to have a pretty solid base. Something like this maybe.

I got a lot of stackable or nesting items, like the Joseph Joseph set thats bowls, a strainer, measuring cups and measuring spoons, but it all stacks into one big bowl. There's also a set of pots and pans that stores in the space of one pot. You can hang a lot of items with command hooks.
These bowls are excellent and should last you a very long time. Highly recommended by myself and they are what Babish recommends.
The serious eats list is great. You might want to get that 14 day free trial to cooks illustrated and read their equipment reviews. I think they do a great job. This batter bowl is one of my favorite things in the kitchen.

Prep bowls are also the home cook's friend. Wash and cut all veggies, put them in bowls. Then prep the meat and put it in it's own bowl. Wash hands, cutting board, and knife. Place all bowls and needed spices by the stove and now everything you need is in one place with minimal chance of cross contamination.
Metal is the way to go because they'll nest together. Unless you live in the palace of versailles, you'll find that ceramic or glass is too heavy/takes up too much room.
I'd say get a set like this for chopped onions, carrots, peeled shrimp, breading mixture etc.
and then something smaller like this for garlic, grated ginger, lemon zest, pitted olives etc.
They won't break if you drop them/throw them into the sink, they're lighter than any other material, cleaning them is easy even if stuff is caked on since you can go at it with a metal scrubber. and they stack such that they take up the volume of just 1 bowl, but you can have 6.
This is the right answer. Stainless is lightweight, easy to clean and non-porous. There's reason restaraunts use it. Get these on Amazon, or even better, find a local restaurant supply and buy them there.
It's cheaper in Grey
Although I paid even less than that for mine. (£12.60 !)
It's also available in metal, but is kinda... pricey as hell.
