I'd get a Netgear CM500 for about $60 from Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XH46MWW/
It's a solid modem and is TheWireCutter.com's current recommendation. https://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-cable-modem/

I'm on mobile so apologies for the full links. But these are what I would get if I was a just trying to stream or using my phone in a bedroom.

Thanks for the educational information.
With those speeds, you can’t go wrong with a Netgear CM500 and a TP-Link AX1500.
I recommend against buying an all-in-one box. Compromises are made that impact performance on both the modem and router side of things.
I'm assuming you mean MG7550 since I can't find a SB7550: https://www.amazon.com/MOTOROLA-MG7550-AC1900-Gigabit-Maximum/dp/B01JGT2JI6
The MG7550 is AC1900, so you should be able to get at least 200-300mbps if your close to the router. So...
How close to the router are you? What speeds do you get right next to it on wi-fi?
If your not getting 200+ on Wi-Fi next to the AC1900 router, I'm inclined to think it's either a configuration issue or a client device issue.
Configuration issue: You have 2.4ghz and 5ghz networks, do they have the same name? If so, give them separate names and make your device connect to 5ghz. 80mbps is a sign it might be connected to the slower 2.4ghz network.
Client device issue: If you have a phone or tablet or something, a lot of times the Wi-Fi in them simply isn't capable of hitting 200+ because it would cost more to produce and there's really no benefit to a phone/tablet that downloads at those speeds (web pages load 0.001 seconds faster because most loading is rendering, thus CPU limited, and if you download at 300mbps, your gonna fill up your entire 64GB of storage in 30 minutes).
So, what device make/model are you using for speed tests so we can see what speed their even capable of?
If your connecting a computer, it probably has a slow wi-fi card (post make/model to verify) and you could either get a faster wireless dongle or you might consider powerline adapters: https://www.amazon.com/Powerline-Ethernet-Adapter-Extender-TP-Link/dp/B084CZMYNM/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=av1000&qid=1605478203&sr=8-1
Are you renting devices from them? (Modem or router). If so, stop. Ask them what modem you need to fully utilize the speeds they offer and buy it on amazon as well as a decent router. I use the ARRIS SURFboard SBG10 DOCSIS 3.0 . Also stop paying for cable. I never see price increases, other than the ending of promotional periods, when purchasing just internet. I don't know if TV and random price increases are correlated but it's possible.
I just got my internet dropped $15 and my speed increased by 200mbps for a year. They switched me to one of the promotions.
It's pretty simple. Ask for loyalty department. Tell them your need to save money and ATT door salesmen offered you cheaper deal and same speeds and be nice.
I use this Netgear modem
NETGEAR Gigabit Cable Modem (32x8) DOCSIS 3.1 | For XFINITY by Comcast and Cox. Compatible with Gig-Speed from Xfinity (CM1000) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0781VN7W5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_ieJaglniBaRV7
Paired with an Eero Pro mesh network
Thanks!
Is this it from Amazon? They have a 1000 and 2000 Mbps.
NETGEAR Cable Modem CM1000 - Compatible with All Cable Providers Including Xfinity by Comcast, Spectrum, Cox | for Cable Plans Up to 1 Gigabit | DOCSIS 3.1, Black (CM1000-1AZNAS) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0781VN7W5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_M87C6BD5ZQSVQN7EYHHC?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Trying again w/ truncated Amazon links:
Got it! Apologies if I was that douchebag on reddit that argues with the question rather than offering an answer.
If I were you here's what I would do:
the R8000 is a beast and would be a great choice as your primary router
Stop renting the paperweight saving $X/dollars per month (10?)
Get your own cable modem (here's a nice cheap one for $45 that's valid for Spectrum) and a cheap wireless access point (may be able to find one as cheap as $40, possibly via a router set to AP mode, here's one for $20 if you're willing to go up to $50 there are a ton of great options that folks here could point you to)
Cable modem -> R8000 -> ethernet-> Wireless Access point in basement -> wireless connections for devices down there
That's about $70, if your rental is $10/month you'll be actively saving money in 7 months.
We got this modem/router combo to replace some old equipment and it's BLAZING fast and was $119. We called BBB with its info and had it set up in under 10 minutes. It's nice just having one piece of equipment, too.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07H42QXF1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Valid points... I do not have Gigabit speeds, but I do have a modem/router that is better than the service I have to my knowledge. Although I wouldn't mind being told I have something that needs fixed.
https://www.amazon.com/MOTOROLA-MG7550-AC1900-Gigabit-Maximum/dp/B01JGT2JI6
This is my device.
Why does ARRIS SURFboard SB6141 cost $20 more than the NETGEAR CM400? I can't see the difference but the Surfboard is the best seller on Amazon by a huge margin.
Links:
https://www.amazon.com/ARRIS-SURFboard-SB6141-DOCSIS-Cable/dp/B00AJHDZSI
The CM400 isn't enough for 200Mbps plans in the US according to this http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-cable-modem/
If you're shopping at Amazon, I'd go for the CM500 over the CM400 since it's $50 (clip the $10 coupon) vs $45 right now.
Avoid the CM700 since it uses the Intel Puma 6 chipset: https://badmodems.com/Forum/app.php/badmodems
The CM500 would be plenty fast for your internet package and is under $50 after coupon on Amazon right now.
I get over advertised speeds. Pay for 200 and get roughly 215-230 on 5GHz wireless. More wired.
I was getting way under. Found out that my router was bottlenecking me. (Random guess by me) upgraded to a Netgear AC1750 and my speeds improved exceptionally.
I also dropped Mediacom's modem for one I got off of Amazon.
Modem: NETGEAR CM500-1AZNAS (16x4) DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem, Max download speeds of 686Mbps, Certified for Xfinity from Comcast, Spectrum, Cox, Cablevision & more https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XH46MWW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_gT24Bb47F17XZ
Router: NETGEAR Smart WiFi Router with Dual Band Gigabit for Amazon Echo/Alexa - AC1750 (R6400-100NAS) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Z0V2NQ8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ST24BbK52HG51
I refuse to use Mediacom equipment.
This shows that you have an SBG1000, NOT an SBG10
Yeah....you need a more modern modem, ideally a D3.1 for best compatibility but something in the last five years would be better than it's showing that you have.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07H42QXF1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Here's the Amazon link to it. It looks like it's an SGB10 from the description. Hopefully I can get a new modem soon.
broooo you are bad at technology
verify the connection is intermittent with a wired connection
pick up the phone and call them.
this isn't uncommon anywhere
Optimum does suck but they will come out
plus coax wired are spiderwebbed everywhere if you're living in a regular walk up. someone could have put a flower pot on the wire, or a rat bit it, or someone's hanging wind chimes off it. the wire going into my apartment was split half a dozen times over hundreds of feet of cable that crossed back and forth over the top and down the sides of half my block despite the distro block being 25 ft behind my place on an overhead data line.
once the signal strength is verified as consistent (they can check the history to make sure it's stable) you can bug them for a new modem.
also as with any cable internet company, it's a good idea to replace the shitty gateway they give you (which, btw is also transmitting an Optimum hotspot in addition to your wifi)
I got one of these modems used for $20, but $40 is a good price too
then hop on Craigslist or FB Marketplace and find a decent wifi router.
I thought this too. Which is the reason I went ahead and purchased a new modem with the capability to pull 800 mbps and a DOCSIS 3.0. The tech who helped me out the other day told me the modems I had were compatible with the speed and services I am paying for, which is why I'm even more confused.
For 100mbps you need a docsis 3.0 8x4 channel modem. This will work.
I bought this modem router (hey look, it's cheaper now) and just used that instead. I had to return that streaming thing box thing they gave me, but I think I ended up spending the same per month, it's been too long for me to remember. But it was worth the investment. It performs just as well and doesn't make any noise. So that's my suggestion, just invest in your own if you can.
Your modem is a 4x4. 4 download channels and 4 uploads channels. That is very limiting, with recent advancements in tech. You're going to want to get a 32x8 modem, that's 32 download and 8 upload. No matter what your speed is, your connection is going use all the channels that are available to it. I highly recommend getting a Netgear CM1000 as it's also a Docsis 3.1, but you can get the CM700 which is Docsis 3.0 if you want to cheap out a bit.
Honestly I'd recommend buying them separately. Whenever you buy a 2-in-1 product you're always compromising something.
In general any good-rated cable modem will work fine. As long as you're fine with its maximum speed, it's the sort of thing that either works or it doesn't.
A wifi router, on the other hand, can really make a big difference. The good ones will cover every corner of your place and automatically adapt to the least congested wifi channel so you don't have to worry about it. Cheap ones will give you dead spots and require tweaking and rebooting to keep them working well.
Get a $45 basic cable modem (speeds up to 400 Mbps)
Then get a $150 mesh router 3-pack which will blanket your entire space with Wifi.
Absolutely. I haven't had a company supplied modem in 15 years.
Modems come in several versions, capable of different maximum supported speeds. The CM1000 is what I would buy if I wanted a modem only (and still needed to supply my own router): https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Cable-Modem-CM1000-Compatible/dp/B0781VN7W5/
At the rate suddenlink leases their equipment, this model pays for itself in two years.
If I was shopping for a combo unit (modem & router/wifi) I would look very closely at something like https://www.amazon.com/MOTOROLA-MG8702-MU-MIMO-Approved-Xfinity/dp/B08DL4QB25 . I don;t have gigabit service so I haven't looked into it but this seems like a capable device.
How about this modem? NETGEAR Cable Modem CM1000netgear cm1000
Also - whole house is not wired for Ethernet - are mesh systems useless if you can’t have Ethernet running to each access point?
If it’s not too much of a hassle would you mind proving me with a link or a name of the product I should buy? I’ve never really bought these and always just fine with what the WiFi provider has given us in the past.
I was thinking of purchasing this to replace the main modem and trying to see if that might solve the issue?

Potentially. For example we stream Netflix, twitch and Hulu pretty regularly as 2 people. Between that and downloading new games (Call of duty war zone was a 300+GB one time install) we're coming pretty close to the cap.
As far as other modems, they shouldn't be that expensive. I'm using this one from Netgear and it works flawlessly for <$100. You can also pick up quite a few wireless router options for <$100 as well, or pay a bit more to get a set of mesh routers that will offer great coverage if you have a larger home. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XGZBCKP/
Basically any DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem with WiFi should deal with your internet just fine (I prefer the Surfboards https://www.amazon.com/ARRIS-Surfboard-Certified-Spectrum-SBG10/dp/B07H42QXF1/). But before I say that, what is the upload speed that Xfinity is providing?

The Xfinity X-Fi box is quite great. You get HBO Max as well as a few other paid streaming services for free in my experience, but it's nothing you can't do with a Fire stick and a few apps.
