P.S. - OP, next time you may want to put the links in the comments of the post. I guarantee more people will get it if they can just get it from the post.
My debut dark fantasy, They Mostly Come Out At Night, is FREE for the next couple of days.
It is available on Amazon stores worldwide:
The book was a semi-finalist in SPFBO2, and I am constantly blown away by the support it receives on the sub. Hope you enjoy your trip into the Magpie King’s forest!
I enjoyed <em>Wearing the Cape</em>, which feels like it does a realistic job of integrating heroes into modern society. Prior to reading Worm I'd have put this forward as the most realistic superpowered media I'd read/watched.
Some minor examples:
All the costumes (other than PR-appearance only costumes) include body armor, and even though she's a classic "flying brick" the protagonist has a costume with heavy defensive plates.
Planes have clearly marked points to indicate where someone with superflight should lift them, should the need arise.
heroes have no special legal powers, but will regularly assist police. No-knock warrants against supervillains are raising legal concerns, and the "I was mind controlled by the real villian" defense is causing chaos in the legal system.
One of the more important things a superhero team does is remain visible and build positive press to prevent public opinion turning on supers when villains cause problems. Rescuing cats stuck in trees is actually a pretty important duty, and having someone with excellent PR skills (either superpowered or otherwise) is essential to every team.
Superstrong is good. Superstrong with an oversized tungsten maul is better.
At the age of fourteen, Raziel finds a speaking sword, which offers the power to reclaim his homeland from the Rhotian empire. When the imperials slaughter his family, he carves a bloody path of revenge, targeting the emperor.
Through a cruel twist of fate, a warchild named Alicia joins him. She can control anyone's emotions with a single glance.
The blade is gaining influence over Raziel, while Alicia’s turbulent powers grow ever stronger. The empire is on the brink of collapse, desperate in its need to destroy them. The children must overcome their self-doubt and fight back if they hope to survive the journey ahead.
A Canticle of Two Souls is the first novel in the Aria of Steel trilogy.
**They Mostly Come Out At Night** is a folklore-inspired dark fantasy, set in the mysterious forest of the Magpie King.

Here's the US Amazon link, but the book is free today on all Amazon stores:

Guess it helps if I call it the right series… the series is called Benjamin Ashwood, here is a link. Had his last name wrong in my original comment.

Maybe this? I haven't read it since it came out, but i remember it being fairly low stakes
BTW, if you liked either of these and also like to read, I highly recommend Wearing the Cape. This genre is a little difficult to find decent writing for, and this is one of the better ones.
The Traveler's Gate Trilogy bundle is free on Kindle today!! Last week it was Elder Empire.
It's available for in India as well but anyone trying will have to change the domain name to amazon.in. Or here's the link. Enjoy!
Have you checked out Benjamin Ashwood by AC Cobble?
I wouldn't call it "simplistic" by any means, but it's def fast pace and to the point!
My fantasy novel <strong>A Canticle of Two Souls</strong> is free on Amazon till 26 July, and I have a signed-paperback giveaway happening too (and it's international!)
There's quite a few russian litrpg authors. They usually sell their translations on amazon, you can find pirated epubs though. The last series I read was "Way of the Shaman"
Since you're looking to try new things, check out Will Wight's Traveler's Gate trilogy. I'm mentioning this one in particular because this weekend it's totally free. https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00ZK3KUE8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_GQ6GCbRVAJYSR
That list of yours is only just beginning, there's so much awesome shit you'll discover on /r/fantasy you have no idea. I wanna point you over to this recent recommendation thread, particularly that top post. https://old.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/comments/ayzi79/book_suggestions/
Yo dawg. I heard you like fantasy books. Tell you what. This trilogy right here? It's free. This weekend only, though. I'm just scrollin' through old-ass recommendation threads and shillin' that link out for one of my favorite authors.

Not really pirates, but alot of the story centers around sailing. He wrote this series as a duo. Of Shadow and Sea (the first book in the other series) shows an alternate viewpoint in the same story and centers around assassins.

book teaser for the first one so you don't have to look
Getting eaten alive is the worst! Stabbings, maimings, and corrosive black magic are not that great either, but you really don't want to be a wolf treat! That is the kind of hands on, “teeth on,” education you get when you are summoned to The Land. James did not want to be summoned! Not really... well a maybe, just a bit! But he had certainly not AGREED to be summoned! … Well technically speaking he HAD agreed, but good god, who had the time to read all of that fine print when there was epic gaming to be done! When DangerZone Industries had released the latest and greatest VRMMORPG, James, and millions of other virtual reality players, had sought purpose and self-definition in this new world. The tag line "Live the life your soul was meant for," had captured the hearts and minds of his entire generation. "The Land," was the largest and most dynamic virtual reality game of all time. James and his friends had devoted countless hours, and become one of the top teams in the game. They were at the brink of greatness, but then there was this light! (it was predictably white, but whatever!) When he was actually summoned to The Land, it was both disturbing and exhilarating. When he then became entangled in the eternal war of sprites and goblins, the unsavory practices of the local king, and had a memorable night at the inn called the Whistling Hen, he came to one clear conclusion: Again, getting eaten alive is really REALLY the worst! While uncovering such deep philosophical knowledge, James will forge a place in this new world, and hopefully avoid the machinations of those who want him to destroy it. What does it mean to be a Chaos Seed anyway???
I've just recommended The Magicians to someone in the simple questions thread, but I think it might fit your criteria even better:
>You may enjoy The Magicians by Lev Grossman. It is a character-driven fantasy trilogy that follows a depressed young man as he navigates late adolescence and adult life.
>I will warn you that it is a polarizing series (see its dreadful goodreads rating) and explores extremely dark subject matter; depression, addiction, and the struggle to find purpose in life once college is over. It is also open in its portrayal of sexual themes, which some find off-putting but I thought was well done.
>Lev Grossman is an extremely talented writer in my opinion, one of the most underrated authors in the genre. He has a knack for imagery, simile, and character. He's worth checking out.
>Before buying, you might want to look through a writing sample (e.g. on Amazon), though I don't know if the first few chapters do Grossman justice.
The real draw of The Magicians its depiction of how someone who suffers from depression and persistent dissatisfaction with life would really react when their wildest dreams come true.
In most fantasy fiction, magic is what saves the protagonist from a dreary and bleak existence (e.g. Harry Potter, Narnia). But for the severely depressed Quentin Coldwater, depression isn't something that can be erased with a magic spell.

Like you, I wasn't a huge fan of the NOTW, though I do love ASOIAF. Before buying, you should probably look through a writing sample (e.g. on Amazon), though I don't know if the first few chapters do Grossman justice.
Edit: I've just read your other comment saying you're new to fantasy. In that case, you may want to delay reading the Magicians unless you are familiar with the typical fantasy tropes. The Magicians is remarkable, imo, in how it inverts and corrupts so many of the genre's beloved tropes. If you're already familiar with the major mainstream fantasy (Harry Potter, the Chronicles of Narnia, etc.) though, then you should be all right.
Check out The Traveler's Gate . It's like reading an anime. High-octane, high magic action that just. keeps. escalating. Guilty pleasure for me.
