The amount of awful things the AFL-CIO has supported over the years is too long to list. It would require a book like Kim Scipes' AFL-CIO’s Secret War against Developing Country Workers: Solidarity or Sabotage? to list them all, and even then, that only scratches the surface of of their international operations.
One of my profs in grad school worked extensively in Haiti on tree-planting projects. One of them involved purchasing plots of land and hiring locals to plant tree saplings; it didn't work very well as far as getting trees to grow since the same locals would let their goats onto the plots at night to eat the saplings.
My profs innovation was to instead give the saplings away for the locals to plant on their own property and raise as essentially a cash crop; it also largely bypassed the permanent chain of corruption running from DC through the Haitian government. Since the project was very successful, resulting in millions of trees planted, it of course had the plug pulled on it after three years.
For anyone interested in Haiti, I heartily recommend these two books: Travesty in Haiti and The Great Haiti Humanitarian Aid Swindle.
Hmmm, TIL books are not viable sources...
Here's a link to it on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Travesty-Haiti-Christian-orphanages-trafficking/dp/1419698036 and there are plenty of summaries out there that you can search for
The Photographer was riveting. It chronicles a photojournalist’s travels with Doctors Without Borders into war-torn Afghanistan. Raw and unyielding, it’s one of the most moving comics I’ve ever read. I was waking up an hour early just to get back to it when I was reading it.
For less messy amazon links you can extract the part after "/dp/" in
and make it:

Plz send any recommendations via PM
I didn't remember offhand, I had to google it. Here's the Amazon link. There's the guy who took the photos (the eponymous photographer), the guy who drew the other frames, and the one who did the layout and stuff.
You are right about aiding the recovery, but you're cherry picking.
America was complicit and/or directly caused genocide in several major East and South East Asian nations. Furthermore, they helped create the current disputes in the ECS and SCS.
Aiding recovery wasn't some act of benevolence. It was a geopolitical move. Money in exchange for military control. Look at NATO and Asian military bases. One corners Russia and the Middle East. The other corners China.
Coincidence? Probably not...

I know you are an ex-muslim, but there are a huge number of accounts of people who went from Islam to Christianity because they saw Jesus in a dream or vision.
Yay! I, too, find God (or a "great spirit") in nature :). I think you'd really jive with the works of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and ecology. He wrote a beautiful hymn called "All Creatures of Our God and King," which is a great one to sing when you're outside and in awe of the wonder and beauty you see around you.
There's also Matthew Sleeth's "Serve God, Save the Planet." Does a beautiful job of explaining the role faith plays in the natural world, and vice versa.
In short, yeah, you should give it a try :). Presbyterian and Lutheran churches might be something you and your girlfriend would like, too; a little bit of "pomp" with the robes and whatever, but overall really chill and fairly progressive.
...you aren't in high school anymore. Wikipedia is a valid source, so long as the things it has cited are a valid source. The wikipedia article has 11 different sources, none of which you bothered to address.
Moreover, that "Sourceless Opinion Article" is clearly cited as an excerpt from a book, so it's not sourceless; I lack the original book to see if that has its own sources however.
You are cherrypicking.

While I'm here: For an evidence-based (though still critical) look at lobbying in America, I recommend The Business of America is Lobbying, by Lee Drutman.
The amount spent on lobbying each year is 5 billion, if you estimate the undisclosed lobbying (current disclosure laws are pretty weak) as being about equal to disclosed expenses. (Which is a good estimate according to "The Business of America is Lobbying".) EVERY YEAR. And it's worth every penny.
Read this book and then loan it to your friend. If your friend thinks the Catholic Church isn't making a profit off it's "charity" (or any church for that matter) she must be informed. Also have her read Hitchens book on Mother Theresa. Disgusting.

The Spirit of Christ speaks to any and all that will listen to Him, even Muslims have visions of Jesus. (great book about that here https://www.amazon.com/DREAMS-VISIONS-Jesus-Awakening-Muslim/dp/0849947200?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0
Do the visions/dreams point us towards Chris and knowing Him better? Do they line up with His Word? If yes, then chances are that it is Him speaking. But the Holy Spirit also gives us the gift of discernment so we can discern what is truth and what is not. It is a very much needed gift! It comes when we are filled with the Holy Spirit. Hence why the Spirit filled life is a necessary one to living out our faith as Jesus desired us to do.
This is only one such book: http://www.amazon.com.au/DREAMS-AND-VISIONS-Awakening-Muslim-ebook/dp/B0078FAA3M It's rather amazing.
Here are a bunch of videos about it too: https://themuslimissue.wordpress.com/2013/11/27/muslims-claim-hundreds-of-thousands-are-converting-in-middle-east-after-jesus-appear-in-visions-and-dreams/
Good luck in your searching!
I am going to get a copy of this book, and compare it to AFL-CIO's Secret War against Developing Country Workers: Solidarity or Sabotage?. Hopefully we can use this book to help discover when the LGBTQ movement entered in the American Labor Aristocracy.
