Via r/AskReddit post here, room darkening shades are among the top items under $100 that are described as "life changing", to which I concur
Also another amazing investment I made was a white noise machine because I lived off a very busy intersection during my college years. The model I linked has been with me for a number of years and still works great! (Not a promotion lol)
Like, if you legit have ringing in your ears, enjoy your hearing damage. If you're just talking about constantly noticing how quiet it is, it never went away for me, but I didn't spend that long outside of NYC.
I really recommend a Lectrofan for sleep. I mean, I recommend it for people that still live here also.
If you haven’t tried this, I second it. We use a white noise machine. I do worry it’ll make it harder for him to sleep without it when he’s older... but I sleep with white noise and it’s not actually uncommon. He used to prefer ocean noises, now he wants the rain. This is the one I use, it will switch to battery if power goes out (which happens all the time in our house when it rains).

I post this at every opportunity. We have 4 of these. Worth every goddamn penny.

We use the Hatch Rest.
It has a multicolored light that allows you to pick the color or brightness. And there’s several noise options built in including nature noises, static, and lullabies.
You control it with your phone and can set up schedules for bed time, nap time, morning wake up. Or you can just adjust it as needed.
It’s $60, which seems steep, but for all of the options and how long we plan to use it, I think it’s worth the investment.
This is the one we use. Ours is great. It was actually my MILs, it's lasted a long time.

In my personal experience, brown noise is the best. It has the most bass which drowns out thuds and heavier noises.

This is what I have and it's great.
Get the kid used to a noise machine right away. It'll help cover up the sounds of TV, music, doors closing, etc so wakeups don't occur as often. I happened to use an air filter at first but now use a Marpac Dohm.
I have that and a dimmed red lamp set up. "Turn on/off the sleepy" controls them.
Agree with this. We used to be in a similar situation. We use white noise machine and although it's better, also tend to not flush.
I know it's far from easy but try to push back on curious George - we have been down that path too and it is a dark and sleepless one.
Edit: also, I never thought this would work but as usual my wife proved me wrong and got our 2 year old on it: Hatch Baby Rest Night Light, Sound Machine and Time-to-Rise https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XMRCC94/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_DAWlCb85K65VS
Our son really does wait for the light to turn green (6am) before running to our room!
I have really bad tinnitus. Get an old school white noise machine, it’s much better than music.

I’m mid ‘40s and have had T for about 10 years. It can’t hurt you, but man, it sure can mess with you mentally (if you let it). Get a noise generator to sleep. I’ve used this one for several years: HoMedics White Noise Sound Machine | Portable Sleep Therapy for Home, Office, Baby & Travel | 6 Relaxing & Soothing Nature Sounds, Battery or Adapter Charging Options, Auto-Off Timer Sound Spa https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00A2JBMRE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_GC0B31FV2CK3PJH0CZ73?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1. Try to always have some noise in the background- tv, radio, etc, always. The more you focus on it, the more it’ll bother you and the louder it’ll sound. Stress and lack of sleep can make the T seem worse. Do you have hearing loss? If so, most hearing aids have tinnitus masker features in them. Mine play a faint white noise that cancels out the T. Besides that, 99% of people eventually get used to it (habituated). Also, benzodiazepines (klonazapam, Ativan, etc, are the only medications that’ll actually quiet it). There’s a website called tinnitustalk.com. It has everything on it. Some people avoid the site because they say it makes them focus on the T. I could go on and on from my previous years of obsession. Who knows, maybe your T will disappear completely. Also, there’s millions and millions of people with T. You’re not alone. Whatever happens, I know you’ll be ok. Let me know if there’s any way I can help.
I have a family history of sleep struggle, including a father who has a CPAP machine. This is what I do for sleep:
And if you can still hear them, get a white noise machine to keep in your room, near the door.
I'm a REALLY light sleeper. Naturally I own one cat who wanders the halls at night, wailing (for no reason at all), and one who runs around like an idiot all night (at 13 years old!!).
Drowning them out is your best defense. The white noise machine is a good start (I like this one). Add ear plugs if necessary.
Talking to them will do no good, since the neighbors already have. Find out your local laws and then file a complaint with the responsible authorities....animal control around here. Start documenting the occurrences of when this is happening and given the neighbors seem tired of it too, band with them to document and file complaints as well.
It's been my experience once someone gets a talking to from Animal Control/local authorities people start to take their barking dogs seriously.
A white noise machine also does wonders to keep random dog barking from waking you.
Second the white noise. We got https://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Classic-White-Noise-Machine/dp/B000KUHFGM this model and it is incredible. Mechanical, super soothing, changed our kids sleeping habits almost instantly.
“The mother” gets very little sleep? Oh but she gets to stay at home. And take care of 5 kids.
I understand that you have some responsibilities also, but you need to make sure your partner gets some sleep too. “If mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy.”
That being said, maybe a white noise machine would help all three of you sleep? We love ours, it’s a lifesaver sometimes. Especially if there is a lot of noise outside the bedroom. But it also helps for noise in the bedroom, and the sounds help people fall & stay asleep.

My boyfriend and I use the Hatch Sound Machine for the baby. It has a few light colors and sound options. The app can set the time changes too, so a natural wake-up light can start when you set it. I am also excited because it will help when she is a toddler and when the light is red, you stay in your room and play if you wake up, and once it turns to white, you can come out. A little pricey, but it does grow well with your kid. I have had zero complaints in the past 8 months we have had it
This has prevented me from committing so many murders. (I have some sensory stuff going on) I honestly can't even give you an unbiased judgment because I can't even pretend I would be reasonable in your position. Hours? Jesus christ.
Yes, do it. Even if it turns out you don't have ADHD, you'll at least have ruled that out and can focus on getting treated for whatever else you may have.
Also: talk to the department that runs student disability services at your school. It's slightly different everywhere, sometimes they're connected with the tutoring center, sometimes they're part of the general administrative services, it varies from school to school. They can help you out with getting testing and filing paperwork with the school so you can get accommodations. Especially for exams, since going by how you describe how your ADHD affects you, taking your exams in an alternative environment would probably do you a world of good.
Another thing, consider picking up a white noise machine from Amazon. The sound they make doesn't sound all that different from when the air conditioning is blowing through the vents, and they're effective at blocking out annoying noises all around you.
We don't have honking, but incredibly loud neighbors! This noise machine has worked well for many years!
Is it possible to do it outside somewhere that might be a bit secluded? (Thinking like the park and you can hotspot from your phone?)
Another thought is buying a white noise machine, which might not be possible. They can be pretty cheap and most therapists use them in their office. You’d just turn it on and set it just outside the door wherever you are.
This one is $14.
This one is $20.
Last thought I have is to think about why this feels so important (it IS important, but why?). If your sister hears, what would happen? Do you think she might tell people/parents/friends? If she did, how would you respond? It’s not paranoid to think someone might be listening in to your phone call when she clearly sits outside the door. It just might be important to figure out what could happen and how you might respond. Is there anyone in your household (a parent, etc) that might be able to help you keep her away during your calls?
We have this one and love it.
Not exactly baby gear, but I recommend reading the book Precious Little Sleep now before you are dealing with a newborn. I found it super helpful for understanding infant sleep and knowing what to expect in the newborn days (and beyond really). It's like $15 on Amazon but my library also has it.
you can use it any way that helps you. but the classic mechanical ones did not come with a timer
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HD0ELFK
it's just like running a fan or air cleaner like some people prefer. background noise.
I use a basic Homedics white noise machine ($20 on Amazon), and it works great. I grew up on white noise machines, and they definitely help me sleep more rested. My wife feels the same way, and she never used one before meeting me.
If you want to try it for a night or two, check out the app White Noise Free. The brown noise setting is the closest thing to my white noise machine, and the app is great to bring on trips.
Kind of, very small though. I'd post a pic but I can't, here's a link to one. I've been using one for over 5yrs now.

Well, was it just a speaker or did it also generate sound? If it was just a speaker then this is stupid wording. If it was a noise generator then it kind of makes sense. Like this.
"Brown" noise machines will be better for your ears and sanity. The depth of the sound muffles low frequencies (stomps) better than white noise machines.

For straight-up white noise, we have the LectroFan ($35). I was being driven to auditory hallucinations by the quick-repeating ones they sell for babies. This one is randomly generated so no patterns, rhythms, or repetition!
Edit: and it's -- lol -- unscented? That's a selling point, apparently?
