We did this with both kids at < 1 yr. Backcountry canoing for a week too (in the summer). We found the PeaPod to be a very useful tool for naps, since it gave us freedom to get things done (like washing diapers :) ).
Camping with the little ones gets better and better. Now they are carrying their own packs on the portages and stomping through the mud.

The pea pod was one like this. ours had an inflatable floor for cushioning. https://www.amazon.com/KidCo-P3010-Peapod-Cranberry/dp/B00CCKC108
Its kid one and it's tiny. It's alot like those folding lawn chairs I see at sporting events. If your concerned I cant give you a Amazon link.

If your wife wants to have the baby sleep in the bed, get her a co-sleeper bassinet that stays on the bed. It gives the baby a safe place (firm flat surface) to sleep and also let’s you be close to her. We used this one and it was great.

Seconded! We had one like this (I bought a used one for $10 on Facebook Marketplace) for the early days. My son wanted to be close so I'd fall asleep with a big pillow propping up my arm and I'd sleep with my hand on his chest. He seemed to tolerate that ok. The only bummer about in-bed bassinets is that usually you can't fit a husband in bed because they take up a lot of space. So my husband used to sleep on the sofa or blow-up mattress in a different room. It's all about survival when they're so small.
I've been staunchly against cosleeping but I have been sick for 3 weeks with a virus that is like a cold but it is also in my eyes. I have light sensitivity and have to lie down in the dark a lot. (I'm communicating with my doctor regularly.)
I have been nursing in bed during some of these times because DD is also sick with a shotty nose and has been nursing a lot. I fell asleep once with her latched and woke up to my husband trying to pick her up and put her in her crib without waking me. It terrified me. She is 16 weeks and could roll over, but I could roll onto her! It happened to my husband's cousin, she fell asleep on th couch with her baby and the baby fell into the crack in the cushions and suffocated. It is so sad.
I use a cosleeper with mesh sides and it helps immensely. I only sit up to breastfeed now (No lying down unless I'm not a bit tired), and the cosleeper makes it easier so I can bedshare safely on occasion. I never have her in the bed when my husband is in the bed because he is a heavy sleeper, a sleepwalker, and be flails his arms. It is difficult to resist letting my daughter sleep next to me as it is comforting for both of us, but I am too afraid something would happen. I got the cosleeper on Amazon for like 50 bucks and we keep it folded up under the bed so I can grab it when I need it. I highly recommend one. I feel it is the only safe way to bedshare.
Anyone who gets this cosleeper, I recommend you use a small fitted bassinet sheet to cover the mattress (if it fits tightly), because the mattress cover that comes with this one is polyester and I noticed it rubs off my baby's hair. Reviews on Amazon said it too. Happy safe sleeping, everyone!

Get one of these travel tents. Very compact for travel, gives the kid their own safe space, and is the same space no matter where you take it, and gives you a closed space for the times you need it. If you get it soon you can introduce it at home first, maybe with play/exploring, then a few naps. This works for my 2-year-old. We first used it when she was 10-11 months old on an air travel trip, fit well in a suitcase, then we’ve used it camping (her tent in ours, next to our sleeping bags), and it has been her sleep space for occasional nights at the grandparents’.
I see, that definitely makes it harder! In that case I would recommend bringing a portable bassinet (something like this) that way if there happens to be an open seat on the plane you might be able to switch to it and you can use it so you have the option of setting them down. You can also bring a boppy to make it easier to hold them in your lap. I’ve never found it very comfortable to baby wear while sitting down so baby wearing on a plane doesn’t seem like the best option, but if you really want to do it I would recommend a soft unstructured carrier like the baby k’tan for a baby as young as yours.
Good luck! Hopefully the flight won’t be so bad for you guys and you find a solution that works for you both!
Hey it’s me a year ago. Mine too hated the bassinet and crib.
It gets better. Hang in there. This too will pass. The first three months are notorious for a reason. If possible, sleep in shifts. If that means leaving for the couch while mom is on duty and vice versa, so be it. We basically started our nights at 6:00pm, and each slept for six hours while the other was on baby duty (minus breastfeed breaks for mom). I have no clue how single parents do it. Hats off to those supermoms and superdads.
For my baby, we kind of cheated and caved in and got a cosleeper basket like this one.. That way we could sleep next to her without rolling onto her. Worked really well, as she got to be close to us, and we could keep a hand on her tummy, plus we got to lie down. Another similar option would be a bedside cosleeper bassinet.
Blanket swaddles never worked either (she wiggled out easily), but she did really well with the Velcro sleep sack swaddle thingies from target.
Yup my newborn is 13 days old and sleeps great by himself during the day but at night husband and I have to take shifts. He does from 10-1, then I feed him, then he take him back until 4AM.
Luckily husband is a night owl and doesn’t have to work right now, but when he does go back he won’t be able to do until 4 anymore.
I’ve had luck with a cosleeper in the bed, like this Baby Delight Snuggle Nest Harmony Portable Infant Sleeper, Silver Clouds, Unique Patented Design, Baby Bed - New!! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B014F7UEXG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_EZDVFV8JWMM9SNDXBZWV
I can put a hand on him and he’s settled pretty well the past 3 nights. But that can always change.
My advice is to just do what works from day to day right now. Their sleep will change as they get older, and a routine could be easier to implement.
Honestly my daughter was a poor sleeper and we held her in shifts until she was around 4 months old! But most babies are better by that point.
Been travelling with mine since he was 6 weeks old and now he's 4! We prefer to stay in AirBNB type accommodations so that we are not relegated to only two beds and a small television ( like in a hotel). These places usually can accommodate certain baby gear if you message ahead of time.
In general, we pack as such when we fly: Stroller, Carseat, small kid sized carry on backpack with some toys, crayons and coloring book, playdoh. A small bag of snacks, my own small carry on backpack with small travel purse tucked inside, my husband's carry on back pack, as well as a suitcase for clothes per person.
We do travel heavy compared to when he was a baby but it's worth it. Remember that things can serve dual purpose - a stroller with tray can double as a highchair, etc.
If we are going somewhere local, we also use a travel cot if there isn't going to be an additional bed available for the little to use. Also, kids are more resilient than we give them credit for a lot of times. Just make sure to budget your time accordingly and plan for extra time in the airport or driving because you'll have to cater to that.
Also, consider investing in in a tablet to keep your sanity in check on long plane rides. For Christmas 2017, Amazon ran a special that included the tablet, a case, a screen protector, and a memory card for about $120. Worth every penny. Drop some acquired movies and tv shows on it and then the littles can watch without need for WiFi or cell data.

My MIL got this for my kids when they stay there. It works pretty well!
If you can rent a pram and travel cot, your life will be much easier. That’s a lot to manage! If your changing bag can somehow strap to a rolling suitcase, that will also help. Could you try a bed like this? Check the weight limits, but it would be way more likely to fit in a suitcase.

My mom got it as an open box deal for me for like $25. It's safer because of the mesh siding, even though it's not cute. ☺️
We just purchased this, and used it last weekend. The first night he kept climbing out at bedtime until he fell asleep, but the second day he figured it out and happily napped there and went to be no trouble. He's 23 months. It doesnt come with a bag, but it folds down smaller than a camp chair and comes already assembled. Both plus's in my book

It doesn’t seem comfy to me, but it’s not bad when you add a sheet and blanket.
They also have co sleeping bassinets like this which i loved. Just a hand on my son's chest was enough to keep him calm or put him back to sleep. It's also very portable.

We just used the Regalo cot for the first time this weekend and our son loved it! They make a regular and extra long version.
I’m kind of against inflatable mattresses because they never last very long and so aren’t great for the planet.
We bought this cot for our son after he outgrew the pack n play and it's been great. Fits in the car well and he loves sleeping in it. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000H1MRJO/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_7H4SC4XW8XQZFWJDBCNN?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Super portable, would def recommend if you're travelling with a bub who fits and isn't rolling.

>Many naps on the floor, laying next to baby
This is totally underrated, by the way. We spent the night at my in-laws' house when my daughter was a little over a month old, and we slept on the floor next to her while she slept in this. She was safe and content, and my wife and I were able to get a decent night of sleep.
I woke up feeling like I got hit by a truck because I slept on the floor, but I did sleep!
I just added some of the kidco travel products to our registry. They have a collapsible bouncer and a bug proof baby containment unit. https://www.amazon.com/KidCo-P4012-PeaPod-Infant-Midnight/dp/B00ZRWOQN8
we got a portable bassinet that folds up and has a hard plastic frame. it fit perfectly in our queen bed and our son’s NICU team said it was a great option and only $50

Co sleeper I have no idea if this is "approved" or not- I am pretty sure they say the only safe place for a baby is in the crib, but I know people use these. If it came down to the baby either being in my bed or being in my crib in their room, I would pick the crib. A lot of parents put their babies in their nurseries from the beginning, you just dont hear about it because SIDS and all.
Those soft side things are just asking for trouble. I had a basket that had mesh all around the sides. I slept on a mattress on the floor and my son was in that mesh basket right next to me. It was this model-

I highly recommend the snuggle nest!! We were gifted one and it's honestly the BEST
We used one of these:
It's perfect for sitting on the kitchen counter while you're cooking. I never felt comfortable using a hot oven or stove while wearing my babies bc it didn't seem safe (I did baby wear all the time tho). Easy to move it wherever you will be.
