Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker. This book will scare you into sleeping more.
There is also a great Joe Rogan interview with the author. Everyone should watch it.
Huge congrats! One book I STRONGLY recommend that you read in your next steps down this plant-based journey is "How Not to Die" by Michael Greger. It really digs into the science behind the benefits of plant based diets and makes some great recommendations.
https://www.amazon.com/How-Not-Die-Discover-Scientifically/dp/1250066115
"In defense of food" and "Game Changers" started me down the path, but this book solidified in my mind that plant-based is truly the way to go. It will change your life, I guarantee it.
You really should pick up Why We Sleep before you decide. Pretty good evidence that there are serious detrimental long term effects on losing even little bits of sleep. Be careful.
Other than the obvious that you're in the r/fasting subreddit....if you're into reading books, look into "The Obesity Code." Explains very well why the "Eat less, move more" movement doesn't really work
Psychedelics get you into a head-space where you can sort of feel the connectedness of everything, and also think beyond the rigid thoughts your mind normally operates on (so as to see things in a different way than you always have). That's one of the reasons so many people have such a profound experience with it. That's why Leary was considering dosing an entire towns water supply, to spur real revolutionary change. I do think there is a case to be made that psychedelics could lead to a real leftward shift in popular imagination, but, then again, theres a Nazi that took acid and came up with the idea of a White Nationalist form of Twitter or something recently, so results vary.
A real good book on the subject of rethinking psychedelics (sorry abt the Amazon link): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1594204225/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
> What would you do in my situation?
Fuck the loans... but also I would get as many credit cards as I could qualify for and max them out enjoying every last second I have left on this Earth.
Unrelated to finance, Michael Pollan has a new book out that I would recommend about psychedelics and their effectiveness on patients given terminal diagnoses. https://www.amazon.com/Change-Your-Mind-Consciousness-Transcendence/dp/1594204225
Take care.
I might get downvoted for this, but I'm not suggesting it without prior research and caution: a psychedelic experience.
It's not for everyone and should only be done if you've done your own research and preparation. That said, it can be a truly profound introspective experience that really allows you to see into yourself. And it can be deeply healing. I learned many lessons, but my 50% of my trip was the most terrifying experience I've ever had, so again, be careful.
Micheal Pollan - How to Change Your Mind - this might be a good book if you're interested.
I'm going to have to butt in and specifically recommend against checking out the /r/fasting subreddit. Half the people in /r/keto have no idea what they're talking about and half that again in /r/fasting have any idea what they're talking about. /u/Obel34 I recommend you read the book The Obesity Code by Dr. Fung to get a good jumpstart into learning this stuff. You can also find all the contents in his book on his blog (free) or by searching on YouTube.
But yeah; autophagy can help reduce excess skin. Skin also takes years to really settle properly, and being active is important to let it tighten up and whatnot. Do all the things and be healthy.
Really glad this situation ended well.
Driving while tired is worse than DUI. DUI causes delayed reflections, driving tired you have micro sleep events.
Read this book: Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams https://www.amazon.com/dp/1501144316/
Read Why we sleep by Matthew Walker. He's a sleep researcher and covered this topic extensively. There are also tips on how to improve sleeping quality (such as regular schedule, avoiding blue light and screens, avoiding alcohol, etc)
https://www.amazon.com/Why-We-Sleep-Unlocking-Dreams/dp/1501144316
Was glad to hear you both found success in your past themes : )
Myke - I found maintaining my weight to be equally as hard as losing it. Forcing myself to weight in everyday has been a really important feedback loop, much easier to have a bad day paired with a good day rather than have 30 bad days in a row followed by 30 good ones!
Grey - re:psychedelics, you might find this book an interesting read. Taking them is unprincipled to blanket recommend, but I highly encourage people to think about seeking them out (especially in the light of your disappointment with meditation)
Everything you need to know about a plant based diet (there is also a cook book)

> I'd wager even intermittent fasting would improve blood sugar numbers in almost all type 2 diabetics.
It does. Dr. Jason Fung's book demonstrates that most type 2 cases he treats are off their meds after a month or so.
Plant-based diets typically reduce the risk of both the first and second-leading cause of death in the U.S. (heart disease and cancer), and it's also known to reduce the risk as well as the mortality rate associated with Alzheimer’s Disease (6th leading cause of death) and Diabetes (7th leading cause).
Congrats on getting up with the alarm but I can't help but think your difficulty getting up is because of some problems that aren't being addressed.
It could be a bunch of things:
The amount of blue light you're receiving from screens before going to bed, which signals a part of your brain to push your circadian rhythm (which controls release of various hormones related to sleep) back as it still thinks the sun is out. Wearing blue spectrum light blocking glasses when I get home helps me be dead tired when my bedtime comes.
Various sleep hygiene musts like a pitch black room (no charging lights, no digital clock, no nothing), cold room temperature, and no noise (do you wear earplugs or do you even need to?)
Timing your sleep cycles to wake up in the light-sleep stage 1 cycle instead of the heavy sleep stages 3 or 4. These later stages have much more sleep inertia and are harder to shake off upon waking.
Because you say that it doesn't matter how much sleep / when you go to bed, I'm wondering if something is interfering with the restorative stages of your sleep cycle. Does your fitbit have sleep tracking on it? If so, what are you clocking in at for each stage?
If you REALLY want to take care of this problem, you should grab this book: https://www.amazon.com/Why-We-Sleep-Unlocking-Dreams/dp/1501144316
It is absolutely one of the most interesting and insightful (and no pseudoscience) books I have read. If anyone is having problems sleeping or would like to know more in depth about the benefits of getting enough sleep (and concrete health risks of the opposite), I would buy this book and devour it!
Ignorance??? I don't know, but it's messed up that people don't know more about a Whole Foods Plant Based diet. This book saved my dad's life. He is no longer diabetic and his hypertension is controlled now.
Michael Pollan has a good book on the subject: https://www.amazon.com/Change-Your-Mind-Consciousness-Transcendence/dp/1594204225/ref=nodl_ He also does a interview with Joe Rogan: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tz4CrWE_P0g Interesting stuff.
I was just listening to the interview with Matthew Walker on Joe Rogan's podcast. He's a neuroscientist and sleep expert and the information he shared on the effects of sleep deficit were really shocking.

I would recommend that you read https://www.amazon.com/Complete-Guide-Fasting-Intermittent-Alternate-Day/dp/1628600012/ And https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1771641258/
These books contains links to a lot of the studies that answers your questions in depth.
Your body will thank you. Raised vegan, sometimes saw my parents “lapse” into vegetarianism, went to mostly vegetarian as an adult but rebelled by trying inconsequential quantities of meat. I had a myriad of mystery health problems that I couldn’t understand and neither could my doctors; I’m early 30’s. It was a horrible journey, but I feel like a new person on carnivore/zero carb and I’m only three months into it. Also everything is starting to make sense which is glorious.
I’ll be honest with you, changes in weight or muscles are not as visually dramatic for me initially. If your experience is like mine, your body will spend a lot of time nourishing deprived joints, bones and muscles in the beginning, but you’ll feel more energy and stronger. I also experienced extreme oxalate dumping which was tough. I wrote some of my experience here (kind of went on a tangent, tbh!): https://www.reddit.com/r/zerocarb/comments/df5qdp/optimizing_my_way_of_eating_for_further_health/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
If you have more questions, feel free to message me. I’m still learning about meat (I didn’t even know what each cut was or how to cook it) but I hope you enjoy that first steak as much as I did!!!
Oh I suggest some good reading for recovering vegetarians/vegans, message me if you’re interested in a book list but “vegetarian myth” by Lierre Keith is a good primer: https://www.amazon.com/Vegetarian-Myth-Food-Justice-Sustainability/dp/1604860804/ref=nodl_
This book does a really good job of explaining the impact of less than 7 hours of sleep a night (TLDR it will kill you early)
Here's a metastudy with many (many) footnotes on sleep duration and mortality.
Just for longevity, this makes sleep at least as important as exercise for mortality.

No it’s not sinful to break a fast. God is happy that you’re even trying, a lot of Christians don’t fast even though the Bible tells us to. I believe there’s a difference between fasting with God and fasting for him, and when it’s with him, Grace is there to help you and to empower you. There is no way I could’ve done the fasts that I have except by his grace!
I have a podcast episode i did on it if you want the link message me. Give some tips on what is helped me. Most of all I recommend this book called The Complete Guide to Fasting written by Dr Fung. It’s very informative!
Also fasting is not to get something it’s to become someone. You’re already close to God by the Blood of Jesus. Don’t use fasting as works, it doesn’t get us stuff. It helps us to learn who we are by the finished work.
I know this is a meme subreddit, but if you're considering not eating, look into fasting, you will see incredible results with a little bit of knowledge and preparation. This book is fantastic, and there is a very active subreddit for all the major fasting methods.
I found that Matthew Walker (neuroscientist and psychologist) and his sleep studies helped me understand the importance of sleep greatly! Perhaps you might want to check him out. I don't know what the general consensus on Joe Rogan here is, but here is an interesting episode where he was on his show. Also, his book, Why We Sleep is pretty interesting.
Or maybe if you want to effectively care for your patients, start having great time management skills. I don't have to elaborate more on the effects of having less than 6 hours of sleep daily on a person's brain, more with 2-3 hours. You could re-read your notes on Neuroscience on that one. Or you could read Matthew Walker's book, Why We Sleep. Let us not pat the backs of people who have poor systems then reason this out with "they just study too much because they care about their patient's health". Let us also not picture it as the supposed norm in med school because this paints a false reality to future med students. Rather, let us promote a culture in our med schools that motivates students to strategically plan out their days. You don't have to lose sleep, risk your self of various health diseases and decline in cognitive function for losing such to be able to take care of patients. "I will sleep when I die" mentality should not be idolized. :)
You have probably already read it, but just incase.

More about IF than Keto, but is still a good read imo.
If you want to get rid of the diabetes and lose weight at the same time, please check out this book: https://www.amazon.com/How-Not-Die-Discover-Scientifically/dp/1250066115
All of the info is free online at nutritionfacts.org if you don't want to buy or borrow the book. It's basically about using a plant-based diet to reverse disease. Everything is evidence based with links to the actual studies cited. I've been following this plan for less than a month (25 days now, to be precise) and my blood pressure has gone from 130/95 to 110/75 and I've lost seven pounds and counting. There's a whole chapter on diabetes, what causes it, and how to reverse it. I'm in the same boat as you, covid weight has not been pretty. Actually getting excited about losing weight now for once haha.
I’m a vet, non-combat...but I’m also a nurse. I have been studying the science behind entheogenic medicines for the past few years now. Cannabis is a great start to entheogen medicine. I tell all my patients that it is not a one size fits all scenario.
Why are you mixing the cannabis with the tobacco? I’ve heard of people doing it, but as a nurse I caution this process due to the known carcinogens in Tobacco.
It’s also important to understand that Cannabis inhibits other agents, meaning it will make whatever you’re consuming work better. It tends to increases the effectiveness of things like caffeine, opiates, blood thinners etc, making a little go a long way usually. Which could be problematic depending on what meds you are on etc. I encourage you to look deeper into the science supporting Cannabis as medicine and learn more about your Endocannabinoid system as well in the process.
I would never sanction street weed, as you don’t know it’s growing environment and you could potentially be taking in molds etc. that could further deteriorate your health. I would always suggest getting it from either someone you trust wholeheartedly or a medical dispensary. I don’t know where you live but it may be who’ve you to research other opportunities to more freely medicate yourself.
Personally, I ingest edibles (gummies and capsules) and dose that way. (I meditate to control my epilepsy and chronic pain). I do consume smoked and vaped flower as well when I need relief faster.
I have always been a firm believer that when it is time, the plant will find you. (Psilocybin, LSD, mescaline, etc). Do your due diligence and dig into the research. It will open your mind to many different opportunities.
If you haven’t read this book by Michael Pollan I highly recommend that you do so.
This is the only book you need to read: https://www.amazon.co.uk/How-Not-Die-Discover-Scientifically/dp/1250066115
TL;DR No animal products, organic, nuts seeds, fruits. He also has a daily dozen is what you should be having every day.
All his stuff if backed by science and there is evidence of Diabetes and other issue's been reversed.
Also check out tv show: Fat sick and nearly dead.
Not expecting anything. At all. But we are expecting adolescents to fight their natural sleep cycle to accommodate the 50 adults that work at a school. I'd highly recommend the book "Why we sleep", if you want to learn more about how we can optimize human growth and learning through simple changes to sleep schedules.
