I'm not crazy into flight sims or anything, but I picked up a HOTAS One for Elite Dangerous and feel it's great for my needs. I don't love how short the cord is connecting the throttle and stick, but everything else has been great.
For that price, you could do far worse.

I was always told Elite Dangerous is way better with a HOTAS joystick and I've recently got this to use with Ultrawings... That and with VR I think now may be the time for me to start up on it. I've kind become obsessed with VR flight sims now on account of how amazingly realistic they make the experience.
I'd never considered adding voice commands too but I'll have to give that a try. I have some similar software I rarely use, I'll have to fire it up or take a look at what you use.
I'm also open to other suggestions on good "flight sim" style VR games. I'd definitely endorse Ultrawings in simulation mode if you're interested in what it feels like to fly an ultralight aircraft. It has a bunch of pilot-wings-like challenges.
If you're on a budget get the Thrustmaster T.1600M FCS HOTAS kit that comes with the TWCS throttle. Everything cheaper has crap sensors.
EDIT: For convenience: https://www.amazon.com/ThrustMaster-2960778-Thrustmaster-T16000M-HOTAS/dp/B01KCHPRXA/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=thrustmaster+twcs&qid=1554676370&s=gateway&sr=8-2
I've always heard the thrustmaster T.16000m hotas is the best "cheap" hotas

I have one, and love it. As far as lateral/vertical thrusters are concerned, there is an analog stick for your left hand pointer finger on the throttle that works great. The stick itself has HALL Effect sensors (same sensors as the very pricey Warthog stick) and is very accurate. It's mostly plastic of course, but at that price point it's a given. The stick buttons (on the base) are kind of useless in VR, but since you aren't running E:D in VR it isn't an issue.
The only real downside is the throttle lubricant from the factory is pretty garbage. I spent a few minutes taking the base off of the bottom and putting some Nyogel 767a lubricant and it has been perfect since.
You bet! Also, it’s super expensive right now but the Thrustmaster T16000M FCS is a fantastic starting setup that is usually around $150 or less but it appears to be out of stock in places. Really solid stick that is higher quality than the starting units without getting crazy expensive. If you’re in the market, I’d highly recommend it.
I'm loving my Thrustmaster FCS HOTAS pack. (TWCS is the throttle, FCS is the combo) Default bindings for the throttle aren't there (since it's brand new) but the stick that comes with it is among the most popular (Thrustmaster T16000M). Another advantage of this, if you decide to go dual stick, you already have an ambidextrous one.
If you're on a budget, the Thrustmaster HOTAS X isn't half bad, but it is decidedly entry level.
Edit: corrected TWCS to FCS and added Amazon links.
Here's a good entry-level HOTAS that a lot of people like using with Elite. It hovers around $50. https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-T-Flight-Hotas-Flight-Stick-PC/dp/B001CXYMFS/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=hotas+x&qid=1553609510&s=gateway&sr=8-1
You can use various buttons as modifiers (like shift or control on a keyboard) to get many different keybinds out of the different button combinations available. A quick search on the ED subreddit will give you many keybind options.
Other good HOTAS options that are a step up from that one are the Thrustmaster T16000M, the X52, and X52 Pro. I use an X52 pro and I love it.
The screenshots on Amazon have a Ace Combat 7 sticker on it. Hopefully it will!
Thrustmaster is down to $99.99 at Amazon now. Best price I have ever seen it: https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-T-16000M-FCS-HOTAS-Controller/dp/B01KCHPRXA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1532931807&sr=8-1&keywords=thrustmaster+16000&dpID=41FobH-77SL&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch
I highly recommend this joystick and throttle for ED. It's a more reasonable price (was actually $35 on Amazon when I got mine), and there are enough buttons to control everything with the right control scheme. I got my Rift a couple of weeks ago and ED is pretty much all I've been playing since then.
Thrustmaster T.16000M is generally a good starter stick. Works well, has a twist rudder and integrated throttle so you can work with just the base unit, or you can purchase add-ons like a separate throttle and rudder pedals.
US Amazon shows it on sale for about $53 USD, about 47€ if you convert directly but I'd guess that price changes by location.
Buy two Thrustmaster T16000 Joysticks, they go on sale on Amazon in 3 days for $59. I just ordered two. Cheers
Ultrawings has a virtual flight stick (its only control scheme before it added HOTAS support).
It is capable, but it is simple, and it is still occasionally frustrating to use even though it is only a little more than the virtual stick.
My belief is that a virtual HOTAS is possible but that it would not be very pleasant.
Unlike steering wheels (I still want a wheel with modern force feedback for under $200, sigh), a good entry level HOTAS is affordable. The HOTAS X is $50 on Amazon.
Those who are accustomed to super high end sticks would object to it but I've found it a great entry point for Elite, and likely far superior to a (nonexistent) virtual HOTAS.
Just picked this one up, you can find it for ps4 as well.
Yes. I noticed that when I pulled ip rhe galaxy map. I feel like I need to stand up and walk back and forth in front of that map.
I've only played for about 15 minutes so far. We'll see how it goes.
The experience was enough to sell me o. Star Wars Squadrons in VR when it comes out.
I bought this at Christmas: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KCHPRXA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ay5fFbFKD7SPM
The buttons on the throttle are super easy to figure out, they're all pretty different in feel and shape.
The buttons on the joystick are another matter though. I havent figures out their feeling yet, they're all so similar
It's like gaming back in the 90s before light up keyboards, and voice chat, where if yoy want to smack talk someone in a death match game, in your poorly lit room you needed to memorize tbe keyboard and type fast between kills.
Yeah, I wish I had that one. I have this HOTAS X. There are a couple of other models with the identical setup for PS4 and Xbox One. They are all currently $75-120 on Amazon, so I'm just grateful for now that I'm only out $7.
$80 on Amazon. Just get this:
Thrustmaster VG Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS One - Xbox One https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07643TW2V/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_UfOuBbSTVPHEZ
Don't get the pedals until they actually have use, or get them if you're gonna get Ace Combat 7 or another game for this.
I use the T16000m Hotas with my VR. Price fluctuates around $100-150, but ie currently on sale on amazon for $97.00
Thrustmaster T16000M FCS HOTAS https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KCHPRXA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_mkakCb41RAAV6
It's got enough buttons to map almost everything you need to the joystick without modifier buttons, but if you use 1 or 2, then you can map everything to it. I only use the mouse/keyboard now to search for system names.
The Thrustmaster T16000m is outrageously good and it's $40 on Amazon. They're reversible so can be left or right if you wanted to go dual for $80.
HOTAS (hand-on-throttle-and-stick) is a setup in which you have one hand on a flight stick and the other on a throttle controller, while HOSAS (Hand-on-stick-and-stick) is using two flight sticks, one in each hand.
I bought the Thrustmaster T-flight HOTAS One, but I will keep this in mind after I get some lightyears on this baby. Thanks for the heads up.
Check out /r/eliteVR and /r/elitedangerous for guides. If you have never played I would recommend playing on a flat screen until you are comfortable with game mechanics. Flying is difficult and you'll want to learn before trying in VR. You can use a controller, which is preferable to kb/m in VR, but there aren't enough buttons so you'll have to bind some dual presses. If you enjoy the game enough, get yourself one of these throttle+stick, they used to be 50 bucks but they're scarce now thanks to ED and squadrons.
I purchased the T.1600M FCS from Amazon and absolutely love it. The throttle works great, you will need to tweak the settings to your preference but I would absolutely recommend it. No clue on the voice stuff since I don't do the virtual stuff. Except for typing/chatting all of it can be done on the two controls. I especially like the mini joystick to get off the pad quickly. I also bound the flapper in front to forward and back thrust when the landing gear is down....
Its cheaper that when bought it....
The TM 16000 HOTAS - I use this for ED - Super awesome for the price. Most HOTAS are overpriced. This one is fantastic for the cost. TONS of buttons and neat features on the throttle you won't see anywhere else! I love the little throttle finger joystick, it makes for perfect lateral and vertical movements to mix with the joystick movements. The X52 will match the in-game model better, but honestly while in VR and doing stuff you're not going to be starring at your joystick and throttle in-game model...like at all. Best budget HOTAS imo.

I use the Hotas X, its a pretty good joystick. You can also find it on amazon a bit cheaper
Amazon (US) has both the flight stick and flight pack on sale. Not sure if they'll go any lower.-
Flightstick: $40, down from $60
Flight pack: $130, down from $160
This is asked a lot, but I saw the Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X, which was the previously recommended budget HOTAS is now out of stock on Amazon.
What are some equally good budget ones? Maybe a list could help.
