Take it down and sand down the areas that are making contact. I’d use a small orbital sander like this one.

I do not use a Festool sander, but I want one. I currently reach for a Makita BO5041... I find that the grip style found on that model works well for cutting down on vibrations. I'd guess that the anti vibration gloves cut down about 1/3 on the vibration; they don't eliminate it but do make it more tolerable for sure. Where I really noticed a difference was with my gas-powered leaf blower!
May I humbly suggest a different tool? A 6" random orbit sander is the most used tool in my shop. It cuts 10x faster than a palm sander, but leaves a much smoother finish than a belt sander. On most projects you can go from rough sand to finish with two grades of sandpaper.
This is the least expensive type we use: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07WK42NC5/ref=cm_sw_r_u_apa_fabc_ktN4FbMMVWZMF?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 It has a dual mode gearbox so it can go from aggressive to fine sanding by flipping a lever
I’ve never done any refinishing, only complete builds but in “building from scratch” the only tools in that kit that would be useful are the sander and circular saw. No matter whether you’re refinishing or building you need a sander. Also a battery powered sander is a no-go for me. Nothing worse than having to stop working because your battery ran out. I’d recommend this sander and either a bunch of sand paper in different grits 80/120/180/220 or a shop vac and adapter to connect to the sander.
The Festool Domino and a Festool sander, the Domino just makes things so god damn fast and makes some really tricky joint layouts really easy. The sander because it doesn't hurt my hand with a vibration like any other sander I've tried, the last sander I had before the Festool is this Makita sander and it's a piece of shit when compared to the Festool. Oh, a dust extractor with a plug on it so when you turn your tool on the vacuum turns on also, such a massive quality of life thing.

My basic rule is if there is a more powerful version I'll get that based on cost but there are all just about 3amps, some a bit under.
$40 sucks for a bauer they were selling those for like $26 every week for a while a few months ago. If you can wait I'd give it some time to see if it goes down and you really want the bauer if not I'd just get another brand, skil has a 2.8amp on amazon for $27 I didn't read the reviews so don't know if there is a game breaking flaw there.

I have the bauer and a cordless ryobi the bauer obviously has much more power than the ryobi. If I needed to replace the bauer right now I'd really look at other options instead of paying $40 for a $30 sander that was on sale for $26 just a few months ago.
Not saying it’s the end all be all - but for the price it was definitely worth it in my opinion.
Hook it up to a small shop vac and it does a great job with dust extraction too.
Oof, good to know. What do you think about this one? [Makita BO5041K 5-Inch Random Orbit Sander Kit

Is it like bottom of the barrel or a good buy?
It’s really fast and really comfortable. You can pay a little less (the Bosch direct drive sander and get results that are pretty damn close.
Good call - you will like that saw a lot. I have the cheaper dw745 but am waiting a bit but planning on a full size cabinet saw eventually.

This sander is nice. I have the Bosch 6” with the front handle and it’s great for longer sanding sessions. I do highly recommend that sander but it’s about 300 bucks.

I have one of these, which does what I want it to do. I don't really see the need for a much more expensive and involved system for sanding a flat board. If you're looking at sanding complex curves and such, it might be different, but I would also expect you to know what you need if you're sanding complex curves.
Fyi the first one is variable speed. You can see the speed dial in the 2nd picture and here’s the Amazon link for the same model.
I have this one and with limited experience I'd say it's a good buy. The variable speed is quite helpful.
Muglug is right on every note. I'll just mention that I got my ROS here BLACK+DECKER BDERO100 Random Orbit Sander, 5-Inch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MLSS1SW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_nzyxCbMB3536X
Its not professional quality, but the price is right and, since you're just needing something for a DIY project, it will be fine for your purposes. You can also save a couple extra bucks by getting it through Amazon Warehouse Deals. In the frequently bought together, there's a 60 piece variety pack of sanding pads. It's more than you need, but you will probably pay about the same or more to buy individual packs of the different grits.
I have this Bosch, and it does a fine job.
For woodworking, the two big power tools you need are a router and a tablesaw. You can duplicate other functions of tools with those two. I would suggest high quality on both.
For a sander, the Festool seems interesting, but I can't imagine spending that much on a sander. Instead, I went with this Bosch which if you take the bag off, has a tube connection that fits a standard shop vac. Much cheaper on all fronts, does the job just as well.
Someone mentioned you wanted to build a deck, and that is one of the few places I think a miter saw is really warranted. In a woodworking shop setting, you could simply use a crosscut sled for the tablesaw, but for more construction style work, a miter saw would be invaluable.
I bought this as one of my first purchases for serious woodworking. It's one of my favorite tools Bosch ROS20VSC Random Orbit Sander with Carrying Bag, 5-Inch, Blue https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BD5G9VA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_NVliAbDCQNV1Q
I always feel the same way about every time saving tool I buy. My latest "How did I ever get by without this is?" tool is my Bosch Orbital Sander
Check out the Makita BO5041K. It's a well rated sander and is a pretty good price. Makita BO5041K 5-Inch Random Orbit Sander Kit
I have bought and used to my satisfaction Truepower 6" dual action polisher.

Thank you for your responses. You've been very helpful
I have been using this....

Works well, holes line up with all sanding disks I have bought. Doesn't get hot, fits well in my hand. Dust collection is actually pretty good( I don't use a vacuum set up on mine, I'm not sure a standard ShopVac port will line up.)
There's nothing you can do with a power sander you can't do with your hands really, it's just a matter of time and patience. I do mine in about ten minutes with a 6" random orbital sander and a couple of different grits. It will take longer by hand but you can do it-- just use a sanding block so you don't sand divots into the wood. Else drop $75 on a decent 5" sander then sell it on Craigslist or Ebay for $50 when you're done with the job. If you're doing entire countertops you'll probably thank yourself for the savings in time and likely increase in quality anyway.
My 6 inch DA pads are too big for many surfaces on my car. This is the DA I have, if it matters. Bargain bin stuff, I'm too small-time for a Rupes. I'm wondering if it makes any sense at all to buy a 3.5" backing plate and 4" pads, or if I'd be happier with a 5" setup. Advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks, I am going to buy:
I imagine it doesn't come with the sandpaper... so I should buy some for it. How much and is it necessary to step it up, like 100 then 180 then 240? Or can I just do it all in one go at 240? I'll get wood from Home Depot (unless that's a mistake?) or similar store.
I will use polyurethane, thanks for suggestion. The finish will depend on what I think will look good. I might go with drift wood finish for this. We will see.
If you get this version of the ROS20VS it's a little cheaper. It's the same sander, comes with the same stuff, it's just a soft case instead of a hard case. This is a good starter set of quality sandpaper.
Prices aren't shown on the Home Depot site, but on amazon it is more than twice the price of the 5in B&D.
Though, the B&D doesn't say it's variable speed. Maybe that's the difference? Is it important?
Yes, owned the sander ahead of time, but seriously, it is so so much better than the little ones that look like this. By better, I mean 'faster' and more efficient.
I'm the kind of person who doesn't want to spend tons of time on a project. I apply that to everything, like buying a mower with a wider cutting surface, a bigger washer/dryer, etc.
IMHO people underestimate how much time they lose by trying to save $20 here and there.
We got the white goods on sale at a big box store that was moving older inventory, so only paid $110. The cabinet was only about $40 on Overstock, and the floor tile was also in the sale section at the big box store, and only ran about $30...add a can of latex paint, spackle, grout and caulking for another $30...I guess it was about $210. We were just lucky with the sale, I guess...it is probably still do-able for $300 if you don't need to have the newest/latest and are happy to buy odd lots.
I've heard good things about Habitat for Humanity stores as well for finding bargains, but I've never been to one...perhaps someone can share?
