I cold soaked rice ramen last year on the PCT- it was a favorite meal of mine! I'm gluten-intolerant and you are right- it is a bit expensive-but totally worth it for me. I found the cheapest/most convenient option was to buy from amazon and put in my resupply boxes. https://www.amazon.com/Lotus-Foods-Ramen-Noodles-Millet/dp/B00HKIBKQS?th=1
In the morning (if I wanted it for lunch) I put the ramen in a Talenti gelato container with a bit of water (it just takes a little bit of experimentation to see how much) add the seasoning packet, screwed on the lid and put it back in my food bag. 3-4 hours later, it is soft and plump! I would regularly add in tuna, or chips or whatever else I had on hand - cause, yea, that's how you do it on the trail. :)
Knorr rice sides also work awesome for cold soaking- same deal, just put it in the talenti container, add a bit of water, and hike away! Then when you stop- dinner!
In normal life, cold noodles sound terrible- but being that my hiker hunger was insatiable- it was like a fun pasta salad.
I've bought a rice-made noodle off Amazon that I bought in Costco previously that wasn't being sold at mine after that first time: Organic Brown Rice Ramen (12 Pack Per Bag) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013MOHYRW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_K3Uozb2BYWHXG Edited for grammar
Amazon do them or if you have any Asian supermarket near by they do.. here's a link..
Nice! Spicy food is great for getting a ton of taste and flavour.
Check out these noodles: https://www.amazon.ca/5pk-Hot-Chicken-Flavor-Ramen/dp/B00GE1XKHY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1515998127&sr=8-2&keywords=spicy+noodle
Super spicy and delicious. Buy them at any Asian grocery store, usually $5 for a 4-pack, much cheaper than Amazon.
I am craving spicy food like crazy! Especially these bad boys - the Samyang Buldak Hot Chicken noodles. I've had probably 3 or 4 packs in the past week. Might need to upgrade to the 2X spice here soon haha.
I do something similar with Buldak (Korean fire noodles) fried egg with runny yolk, dried shallots, bit of cracked pepper. Sometimes I may add some bacon or some grilled chicken breast depending on how im feeling at the time.
Well, all the pho I've ever had used rice noodles (vermicelli) Tons of different brands that are pretty much identical. I usually go with the flat rice noodles: https://www.amazon.com/Vietnamese-Stick-vermicelli-Three-Ladies/dp/B00ADHM9WW
(Usually way cheaper than 7$ on Amazon) Most general grocery stores sell them for $2 per 16oz package.
This is the way to go. And you can get next day shipping with Amazon within Calgary if I remember correctly. I have only ever ordered it once, and that was just a few months ago, so I cannot really tell you much else.
If you don’t want to buy any appliances, I would go to H-mart and pick up some Korean instant rice. It’s actually pretty good for microwaveable rice. Do not get uncle Ben’s or other crap like that. Looks like this -
https://www.amazon.ca/Cooked-White-Rice-7-4-Ounce-Containers/dp/B003U97L1Y
I've had these before and they are pretty good, if you don't mind paying the extra. Find a good ramen recipe you like. You can make a container of bulk seasoning so you don't have to mix it all the time. I'm sure it could taste even better than that shit food.
Most grocery stores have these (they also sell a large pack at costco):
Alag spice levels hai. Like till 3x spicy. Diff flavours are also available like cheese and carbonara and even a curry flavour.
Yeah, I ordered these noodles for fun on a whim. Definitely spicy. My friends didn't believe me when I meant it. Ate a tenth of the cup and gave up. My spice tolerance is insane, even if it looks like I'm suffering, because at least I'm not puking.
I haven’t bought anything locally that is comparable, but I have bought this from Amazon: New Samyang Ramen/Spicy Chicken Roasted Noodles, 4.94 oz (Pack of 5) https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00GE1XKHY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ES09EHDVR07PQ5X6YVQ3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 and it was super hot!
I completely agree with this. Don’t feel obligated to go out of your way OP, your son’s friend will appreciate your hospitality and doesn’t expect anything besides what you’re already making. If you want to to add a couple of sides maybe consider a microwaveable rice bowl, roasted seaweed or some prepared side dishes from the Korean market (everyone at the table will enjoy trying these too). You’re very sweet for doing this🥰
Oh, weird. "MIYAKO KOJI" Is the one I used. It seemed to be the same one that some online recipes I found used so I just stuck with that. Here's a new link:https://www.amazon.com/MIYAKO-Malted-making-Pickles-Isesou/dp/B004FH67ZQ/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=MIYAKO+KOJI&qid=1632788172&s=grocery&sr=1-3
They seem to sell other types and brands of koji on amazon. 👍
Well, I used koji I bought on Amazon to "dry age" my steak about a year back and it turned out pretty dang good. It comes in a sort of brick but I just ground it up in a blender to get it as small as I needed: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004FH67ZQ/ref=ppx\_yo\_dt\_b\_search\_asin\_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Try this
CJ Rice - Cooked White Hetbahn, Gluten-Free & Vegan, 7.4-oz (12 Count), Instant & Microwaveable https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003U97L1Y/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_BNR4F4G9751QYBZYT5KS
Instant rice in single size portion. Just need a microwave.
If you were just going to used AMG? Nah, you could do normal mash times.
If you were making your own koji rice? That's like 2-3 days controlled grow.
Honestly, I just used these in the mash when I made my beer.
If you were going to go that route, I'd suggest doing iodine conversion tests over the course of 1-2 hours, perhaps.
This may be a dumb question. I have a bunch of single serving cooked white rice things. Can I add the ingredients to the already cooked rice, blast it in the microwave for way longer than the package calls for, refrigerate until cool, then eat? Will it have the same outcome? Or does it only work with uncooked rice being cooked with the ingredients, then cooled?
Is this what you are talking about? I'm always looking for variety.

Lotus Foods Organic Brown Rice Ramen (12 Packper Bag), 30 oz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013MOHYRW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_cWz2Fb7HRHYJ4?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Absolutely love these. Pricey on Amazon but I’ve seen them sell singles at target. We get a big bag of them at Costco for $9
First off: They are EXTREMELY easy to make. If you're making chasu pork, just use the leftover soup from your crock pot or pressure cooker.
On cooking day, I will pour a bunch of chicken broth, GF tamarin sauce (should be naturally GF) and brown sugar into a pot. Sear pork belly on each side and then toss it into my instant pot. I'll cook it for about 30 minutes (pressure cooking).
At the same time, I soft boil a bunch of eggs for 7 minutes. De-shell them and put them into a low-top tupperware. When the meat is ready, fill the tupperware with the soupy goodness.
Wait about 1-3 days (longer the better) and you have some pretty awesome eggs.
I don't have an EXACT recipe for this. I keep changing it up. In fact, I tried pot roast instead of pork this time.
And a huge shout out to Lotus Ramen in bulk on amazon. It's definitely not as cheap as a regular ramen, but it's getting close!
I have bought ramen noodles in the bulk section of the grocery store. So if you have a bulk store near you might be worth a call to them.
Also found this on Amazon and it comes out to ~$1.50 per serving. But buying from a local store is much more economical and closer to zero waste.
I was just double checking they are artificial chicken flavored
https://www.amazon.com/Samyang-Ramen-Chicken-Roasted-Noodles/dp/B00GE1XKHY
But not all of them from this brand is vegan so you need to be careful and double check.
I recommend ordering a bunch of these from Amazon, ramen noodles are amazing and these ones will make sure to keep you warm in the harsh Canadian winter.
The only totally vegetarian one I know that's is also very good, but extremely spicy, is Paldo's Hwa Ramyun, see here on Amazon.
That's not a bad price, but check all the "Fulfilled by Amazon" sellers, they're all good for this SKU, and that's critical because of commingling, you might get it from another 3rd party with inventory in a closer warehouse.
Be warned if Amazon is the seller, it's very likely near its best by date if they have it in inventory, which they generally have now.
Nongshim makes a "Soon Veggie Noodle Soup", see here for Amazon, since it's out of stock for a few days you might actually get fresh product, I'm rolling the dice on that with another of their's.
Warning, the reviews convinced me not to try it, but since I'm not a vegetarian, have so many other choices that I love, that that was a major factor in my decision. And /u/Emeralds92 likes it.
Capers & lemon go so well with tuna. Italians make a delicious (gourmet) pasta dish with it! I'll have to try it with my millet pasta, which is very mild & goes well with seafood.
You can get them cheaper than that on amazon. I've seen them going for £5.73 for a five pack as an add-on item. Ok they aren't the 2x spicy ones, but I've had both of them and these ones are almost as hot.
Or if you absolutely must have the 2x spicy ones as featured on the video, you can also get them off amazon for £6.74 for a 5 pack
