I have this backseat bridge for my car. It basically covers the footwell in the back seat, so there's more room for your dog.
We bought a cover for the backseat that extends from the seat to the middle console and then has a little divider. We liked it because it essentially flattened out the backseat, and then we used his normal bed on top. Also used a seatbelt that connected to his harness. link to backseat thing
Thanks! That's a Kurgo Tru-Fit No Pull Dog Harness from Amazon, I got the large size =] I've been very happy with it so far, haven't had any issues or noticed any rubs on him anywhere, I'd definitely recommend it!
Here's a link to it if you want to check it out: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00164ZWBG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_8BdnAbECHVJJG
We bought one from Amazon that has worked well for us. He's fully grown, so I'm not sure how it would translate for a pupper. It has multiple adjustable straps which help it fitting properly. (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00164SZMO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_2jTUAb7QTEAAK). We also ordered a handsfree leash with multiple hand holds that I found helpful in teaching him not to pull, and it's great for hikes. (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M7ND6E4?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf) Hope it helps!
What I did was buy a “half hammock” back cover! So half the back seat is covered for the dog and the other part has the baby seat. You should be able to find one on amazon. This is the one I have. Pricey, but I haven’t had a single issue with it and a year out it’s held up extremely well. https://www.amazon.ca/Kurgo-01783-Heather-Half-Hammock/dp/B01MU7O40P
I had another problem. My kitten pecking feed like a bird. I think she was in pain. So I bought her rubber bowl, like this one — https://www.amazon.com/Kurgo-Portable-NoSpill-Accessories-Coastal/dp/B06XWJGT88?th=1
> Amazon did recently stop selling those things you stick into the seatbelt thingy to stop that pesky “ding” noise though, who needs a seatbelt anyway?

I only know this is a thing because we use some for their intended purpose.
I have a Kurgo dog seat (see https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004699SHW). It hangs off the car head rest, and allows the dog to sit up high and see out of the window. You attach a clip to both the seatbelt and the dog’s harness to keep it safe in case of an accident.
It works well, and my dog likes it. It has the added benefit of containing the mud, if you have a wet dog.
You could perhaps make something like this, but if you do, make sure you understand how they put things together to keep the dog safe in an accident.
It's also legal to marry your cousin and 14 year olds in certain states, doesn't mean you should do it. Unless you're just going for a quick drive at low speeds, strap that dog into a seatbelt if you love them. I use this with an extra carabiner to latch onto the seatbelt clip and a body harness. If we're going at highway speeds I've got a crash tested harness I use. Last thing most owners want is their dog getting ejected outside their car.
I have this Kurgo half hammock that I've had for about a year. It's been very durable with my medium sized dog that never sits still. I love the seat divider 1: because I have a 5 year old kid that likes his space, and 2: my dog sometimes gets car sick and this keeps things contained. It's easy to take in and out, and cleans really easy.
I have a hammock looking seat cover, and got the following harness with metal buckles. It comes with a set belt tether that is supposedly crash tested. Although the results are somewhat dubious, it's a step up from most others that aren't even tested.
I highly suggest a tether, because you don't want rough stops to throw the dog forward and etc. My dog refuses to go down in the car, as I suspect he gets car sik.
My dog rides in the back seat secured with a Kurgo safety harness.

I also use the Weather Tech seat and door protectors. The nail scratch marks on the door protectors confirmed that it was smart to get them.
Something like this might help, especially if she's crate trained and feels secure in small "dens"
Mine does best when I put her crate in the back. Need a good sized suv or van for that though
Thank you! I do have a harness for her that I like and that she tolerates pretty well… although getting it on her has turned into a game of “you can put it on me, but only if you can catch me!” We do a fair amount of traveling by car with her, so the brand she wears is crash-tested. The straps are easily adjustable to fit her rib cage properly, and it has a front and back ring to clip a leash onto to better control the pulling we can’t seem to train out of her. Something like this is great if it works for your dog: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0064ACNLO
My dog hates things going over his head unfortunately...I have that harness but need to do a bunch more desensitization before he'll accept it. I'm using a Blue-9 Balance clip neck harness for now, attached to this tether: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07VDB1THL. The high front wall of this Tesla barrier makes me feel better in case my current non-crash-tested harness fails.
I ended up going a different route for my girls; I'd tried many leashes and other things but I just never felt they were safe enough; they're inherently flawed that they have to be too long so the dog can sit up...so I did this instead:

It works well. I have two 45lb Australian Shepherds.
They sell a harness that is crash safety rated and like a rope to go around your roll bar.

We do a lot of long road trips with our dogs, one is small, reactive and older with kidney disease so she needs to drink lots of water and pee frequently, and the other is a big gsd mix and very athletic/energetic. My top tips:
-plan to take regular, solid breaks. We try to find either a dog park or a place to go for at least a short hike every day on our journey, often more than one. Bringfido.com has some good ideas and reviews. I'll also just search for dog parks on Google maps and plan our route around hopping between them.
-keep a stash of toys/treats at the ready, things you can switch out to keep the pup entertained
-stay on their regular food schedule as much as possible. We have plastic bins we keep their food in ready to go, and jugs of water. The back of the 4runner is also perfect for a no spill dog bowl so they can have access to water whenever! We have this one and its awesome, both dogs definitely love it https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XWJGT88/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_4OlcGbM1GVYPW
Something like this might work well!
Kurgo Dog Hammock Car Seat Cover for Pets | Pet Seat Cover | Car Hammocks for Dogs | Water-Resistant | Wander | Heather | Journey | Half | Coast to Coast | Cars, Trucks, SUVs | Black | Grey | Khaki https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MU7O40P/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabc_dlC_kXwWFbWW9ENWS
we went through 4 harnesses before the one we have now (little chewer!) and can definitely say it’s the best. she can’t get to the chest part to chew on it while it’s on (a problem with two of our previous ones), and it is more customizable to size than many others. great for a growing pup. it also has both a back and chest clip, which is helpful for us for loose leash training. also used as a seatbelt. i definitely recommend this brand! good luck!
We have this Half seat hammock style cover for our dogs so that there can be a passenger on the other side of the rear seat. (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MU7O40P/)
Not sure if it'll work for your usecase but it could be an option.
Welcome to the Greyt Lakes!
I've just accepted that they get messy and prepared the area with the bowls for this. However, I did get one of these Kurgo bowls and it seems to work pretty well. It's on the small side so I use it more for when I go places where I don't want them splashing water around.
I've seen other similarly designed bowls so I suspect any bowl with that inward lip will help.
We use these seat belt carabeener attachment for our two buddies, they're happy to sit in the back seat
I use this one.
I love it. It’s also a booster seat, you adjust the height so they can see out of the window and windshield. It comes with a seatbelt teacher that you can attach your dogs harness so they can’t jump/fall out. The lining and cushioning comes out super easy so you can wash it. I’ve had it for years and even with my doors off most of the time, I have zero concern he will fall out. It’s really easy to put in and take out too, but I usually leave it in unless I have a passenger. My little guy is 11lbs and has plenty of room to lay down in it also. Honestly can’t recommend it enough.
I just bought this but we're waiting for our puppy to grow into it (accidentally bought it too large) so I can't comment on how it is. https://www.amazon.com/Kurgo-Tru-Fit-Crash-Tested-Harness/dp/B0064ACNLO/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1522867061&sr=8-5&keywords=kurgo+dog+harness
We bought this one. It clicks into the seat belt buckle and attaches to the dog's harness with a carabiner rather than a traditional leash clip, which hopefully makes it less likely to break in an accident. It also comes with an adjustable strap, which is useful for us so our little dog has enough give to lie down, but not enough to jump toward the floor and hang himself.
We have the kurgo harnesses for both dogs (small and medium). They have rings for front and back leash attachment and there is plenty of sliders to adjust it perfectly. Favorite harness we've tried so far!
Kurgo Tru-Fit Smart Dog Harness, Black, Medium https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00164SZMO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_r-XDybWGTNBNQ
We have a seat cover already. We also use a seat belt tether most of the time.
I like the Waterboy idea. I think I'll get one.
