Wil Wheaton, for those who don’t know. The audiobook ranks among the highest critically- and user-acclaimed audiobooks for a reason, as Wheaton gives an iconic performance.

I’ve been listening we are bob in my free time. It a good book just a bit different. Would recommend. https://www.amazon.com/We-Are-Legion-Bob-Bobiverse/dp/B01L082SCI/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?keywords=we+are+bob&qid=1573307969&sprefix=we+are+bo&sr=8-2
Could it be “We are Legion (We are Bob)”. Book one of the Bobiverse? This is a major plot point
We Are Legion (We Are Bob): Bobiverse, Book 1 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01L082SCI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_1n3HFb764EZ80
Weird... This is the one that comes up through search for me: https://www.audible.com/pd/Sci-Fi-Fantasy/Leviathan-Wakes-Audiobook/B00P9XDQFY
Has every indication of being available in the US (shown on Audible.com, price in USD, separate section for .com and .co.uk reviews, buy button for my credit or with money)... but then it just doesn't work.
If I try to buy via Amazon (link) I get an error saying "I already tried to order this title" (no shit), and that I should wait ten minutes for the book to appear, or try again later. Has been happening since Saturday...
EDIT: re your edit: yeah, that's the amazon link I mentioned. So that's the one that tells me I already tried to buy it..
In the U.S., Amazon/Audible's current trial promo gives "2 free audiobooks" according to what I see in the sidebar notes on this page:
https://www.amazon.com/Leviathan-Wakes/dp/B073HBQXMT/
If you decide to go for that, save a screenshot of that page as evidence for complaint in case they fail to give you the 2nd free book. ~~(I'd be cautious because another page said they only give one book free.)~~ [Edit]: The 2-book deal is apparently a limited-time "holiday offer".
I recommend the one with Scott Brick. It's a bit strange, vacillating between fully cast voice actors and a single reader, but it's got good audio design.
It's one of my all time favorite novels, so I hope you like it, but the mindset of "I should have read it by now" is not a healthy one. Just because Matt likes it doesn't mean it should have the same impact for you.
To complement Neverwhere, here's the most recent radio play they did of it. Really well done! The cast includes James McAvoy, Natalie Dormer, Christopher Lee, Benedict Cumberbatch, David Harewood, Sophie Okonedo, Anthony Head and David Schofield.
This is kind of more toward a harder sci fi than Ready Player One...so the opposite direction of fantasy, but go with me here for a moment.
I have two series that I love that I've been listening to on Audio book.

Expeditionary Force series is great. That link is to book one. I've finished this series to date and there is one final book expected in December.

Undying Mercenaries is also great. I'm on book 16 and to my knowledge the series isn't coming to and end.

I really don't know which to recommend first, they are equally good in my opinion.
So a collaborator shared it with me years ago, just looked and it looks like it’s been taken from the shared drive.
So here’s the gross Amazon link.

Kinda silly take on the superhero genre. Well written and genuinely entertaining. And I am not a comic book person.

Ha! That's a great image. In my mind, Ray Porter always looks like a cross between Clive Owen (action hero with a chiseled jaw) and, strangely, Rick Moranis (a big brain with a heart to match...and chunky glasses). :-D
If you haven't already, definitely check out the Bobiverse series also narrated superbly by Ray Porter.
I was thinking about the asshole star ship AI from the Expeditionary Force when i made that comment. Guess that either of them understands personal space.
Expeditionary Force Series 1-11
The character Skippy the magnificent is worth the read alone.
Want a lot of bang for your buck.
Galaxy Outlaws: The Complete Black Ocean Mobius Missions 1-16.5
86 hours. And 6 minutes.
Firefly, with magic! Not very serious. It is fun and really well narrated. Enjoyed it all.
I'm not completely sure. I've only ever read the physical book. I've heard great things about this version, but I think it suffers from the voice acting switch that you note. I'd check over in /r/dune for more info!
I very highly recommend Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, read by Wil Wheaton! It is my favorite ever reader for an audiobook. Here is a link: https://www.amazon.com/Ready-Player-One-Ernest-Cline-audiobook/dp/B005HG7BWC
There's a character named Professor Well Actually in Corporation for Ultra-Human Protection who has this power. He only knows more when correcting someone.
Character: "There's no way to know how big the monster is!"
Professor Well Actually: "Well, actually, based on the seismic impacts from it's footsteps, we can estimate its mass to be..."
Hilarity ensues when his girlfriend leaves him because he's always correcting her, or when someone says "we're screwed, we can't win against this monster" and PWA has no response.
In case you decide to consider trying the audiobooks from Amazon:
If you are new to Amazon Audible, they might offer your first audiobook for free. Check the Amazon site for your region to see if that deal is available. If you're in the US, for example see here for Leviathan Wakes. (You can also click "Audible Sample" on that page or the other audiobook pages to hear a short excerpt for free.)
Check out Amazon/Audible. All of the books have been recorded, the original six by a cast of multiple speakers.
It should be the first search result to come up, and it's available on Apple as well.
I love the book. Have you heard the audiobook? Hands down the best audiobook I've ever heard. Every character is voiced by a different actor. Mark Hamill does a voice. Henry Rollins, Alan Alda, Martin Scorcese, and more. But it made me wish they'd adapt the book like a Ken Burns miniseries. 10 episodes, done like a history of the zombie plague, showing lots of news reports and eyewitness footage from phones etc, social media panic. Them do all the interviews like an oral history with flashbacks. It would be fantastic. Here's the Amazon link. Listen to the sample.

I got it in audio format. I heard it was written with firefly in mind. Slight warning, it does have a fantasy element.
It's been mentioned but I definitely recommend the Expeditionary Force by Craig Alanson. I believe they're on sale on Audible right now.
It's funny, creative, and the characters are enjoyably. Not as science heavy as Bobiverse but not light on the science either :)
Then you might like the Expeditionary Force books by Craig Alanson :)
So, I've wanted to try getting into audiobooks. Haven't signed up for Audible because I didn't know if I'd get my money's worth out of a subscription service. Would I need to be a subscriber to listen to just one book to see how I like it (I ask because it may take me longer than the 30 day trial to get through it)? If not, I'd really like to give World War Z: The Complete Edition a listen.
Great story. I would love to see a sequel series for the Terrans. (gotta go back through and make sure all chapters have an upvote)
Also, this series reminds me of a book series I started reading midway through your first chapter and the last one. If you are interested in reading about what you wrote about.
The series is called "We are Legion; We are Bob" it also involves a human becoming a von Neumann spaceship. No alie...no spacefaring aliens in that series yet, though.
Just to clarify, I was referring to the BBC 4 radio play which was first broadcast in 2013. It was 6 episodes long and thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish.
Although I obtained it via less savourable means, here's an Amazon link if you're interested.
