I've killed a couple rounds myself... Biggest thing is to just about never water them, literally like 3-4 times a year, and give them as much sun as possible. I've been pleasantly surprised that they aren't that hard to grow from seed. Bought an awesome kit from Amazon if anyone else is interested. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076PVCG7M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_957xFbR9765FM They're teeny! But alive so far.
The visible mushroom part doesn't live so long on most species so they wouldn't be great decoration. But you can get these very cool little foam things that grow mushrooms on them! I had this one and it was great https://www.amazon.com/Back-Roots-Mushroom-Mushrooms-Gardening/dp/B00TUYGRU4/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=mushroom+log&qid=1606877306&s=grocery&sr=1-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzVUFENDdFVVZOVks4JmVuY3...
I've had by far the best luck going to my local tractor supply and grocery stores. Grocery store usually has a few packs of ball jars we can pick up. Our local tractor supply or hardware stores have seeds, even if they're not the fancy Baker Creek varieties.
Also, Amazon! I bought an heirloom seed variety pack for like 25 bucks. It's still in stock: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B017YET9K6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Haven't sprouted any of the seeds yet but seems like a good enough deal.
I don’t want to ship the seeds internationally, but there are plenty of sites online that do so. Amazon and eBay have tons of listings for Heavenly blue seeds: this is where I bought mine!
why can i get them on amazon, then?
Haha! My instinct is to buy all of them but my history tells me I have a brown thumb so to try it out first. Maybe I’ll look for those ones you said on amazon!
Edit: I bought these ones :Rare Authentic Lithops Seeds with Germination Guarantee / Bonus Mini Live Lithops / Germination Kit Included / Freshly Harvest Premium Quality / Pack of 25 Seeds https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076PVCG7M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_FrWgBb3ADNWDP
Thanks for the sterilization tip, and the link. I shall investigate it fully. I got my seeds from amazon... these ones... are they alright? This is my first time trying to grow from seed...
Buy this and spread them through his entire yard. They will make many more. https://www.amazon.com/Seed-Needs-Dandelion-Taraxacum-officinale/dp/B0042HY3LO
This is a fantastic hobby for kiddos! But since this is probably the worst state in the country for anyone to pursue this hobby, if you wanna see if fungi/mushrooms spark his interest I recommend trying one of these out. These little kits are so much fun I've bought 5 diff kinds at this point and learned how to exploit them for multiple harvests. And if there's anyone in the fam who enjoys eating mushrooms, the harvests are great in ramens and stir frys.
Also yes I reeeeally do need to get a better camera and learn all it's fancy tricks for this hobby. Or at least something better than the HDR setting on my phone.
And thanks for the well wishes. I really did have a great time and appreciate how awesome the community has been about helping out and supporting the need for a break. Y'all are the best.
Growing and eating gourmet mushrooms.
It's easy to start growing your own gourmet mushrooms such as oysters or Lion's Man by purchasing something like a mushroom grow box, $15 US. This will yield half a pound to a pound of tasty mushrooms!
If you end up enjoying the grow process and mushroom flavors, there's a whole new world awaiting you around growing and eating or even selling gourmet mushrooms.
In the colder months I try to seal my grow room up as much as possible to prevent heat loss and cold air infiltration and I've been a little concerned that this might cause CO2 levels to drop enough to have an effect on yield.
Like you, I'd thought of composting. It seems like if you compost the same weight of biomass as the amount of mass you expect your plants to grow it should equal out. I'm hesitant to try though as I believe in a sealed environment the odor from the compost would be strong enough to taint the flavor of the cannabis flowers. I'd also thought of buying some mushroom kits for this purpose, but I don't know if and how bad those might smell.
I haven't tried anything yet and don't have any answers for you. I'm just sharing some thoughts I had along those lines.
Monte carlo. I got a 3 packs of seeds off Amazon
So I received an oyster bag kit as a gift. Since I wanted to build a mono tub, I thought this would be good motivation to do some experimenting, practice and get my tubs built.
According to the instructions on the oyster kit, I soaked the mycelium cake in water overnight and then broke it up into substrate (CVG) and put it into a mono tub.
The instructions on the kit suggesting watering the kit directly daily, so I started by direct misting but after lots of reading, I switched to only misting the sides of the tub and fanning a few times a day. I started seeing pooling and there was a slight orange/yellow color which in another sub someone referred to as mycelium piss (?).
Pinning and growth started a couple of weeks ago. I have been fanning and misting multiple times a day. I flipped the lid and i swear I saw growth that same day. I had them sitting in a room that had a lot of sunlight, and I moved them to a darker space a few days ago with minimal light. I noticed more pins popping up this morning. So things are happening in there, just not what I read about most oyster grows - apparently they grow fast and large!
I'm not too worried if I have to dump these guys. I could actually use the tub for a future grow. But, I wondered if there was anything I could do to salvage these guys.
Thanks in advance!
Thank you! He knows he’s a very handsome little boy. I got it off Amazon, Zafina 3 Pack Aquarium Plant... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CGGJKZ5?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share. It’s some seeds that you dry plant and after a month or 2 it turns out like this! It was super duper easy and a ton of fun to watch it grow! The whole process was super simple, I just sprinkled the seeds on top of some moist fruval stratum and put some plastic wrap on the top of the tank to keep the moisture inside, I kept the light on all the time for the first couple days then decreased it to around 12 hours a day the rest of the time. You just have to mist it a couple times a day and it’ll sprout within a few days, after a couple weeks you flood the tank and in no time you get a gorgeous full carpet.
Also, I bought this off amazon which feels too easy so please tell me if I just bought normal ass seeds like a dumbass.

This site has about all the info you need.
Here's another helpful piece I found

When did you plant them? And how? Don't bury them, rough up the ground, mix them with sand and spread them out sparingly then water until ground is moist to the touch. Not soaked. Did you buy specific seeds for planting? Try finding some that are 80-90% germinated.
Here's where I got mine
Seed Needs, Single Mixed Poppy (Papaver Somniferum) Twin Pack of 500 Seeds Each https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003TJKMKW/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_QJ2T2GVS1CCV5GGA2KYR?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Sure (some assembly required)
Back to the roots kits are simple and easy. Amazon has one on sale for $13. That is how I got started. You of course can go bigger or better, but starting small is often the best way.

I read it’s not illegal to possess spores, but also read it can be difficult to grow safely (without unhealthy mold etc)
I have 2 small kids who have the magical ability to unlock any door and get into only the things i dont want them to get into lol.
If there’s a “shrooms growing kit for beginners” that makes this easy and safe, i’d love to give it a shot!
I’ve done this with my kids and it was awesome. Can the shrooms you guys are talking about be grown as easily as this? (I hope yes! And i hope it’s ok to share amazon link)
