You might be interested to know that Amazon sells a li'l snow cone machine for pretty cheap. We bought it last summer and used it for a fundraiser. Uses standard ice cubes and works like a champ.
There’s a copy of the old Waring Pro electric ice crusher on amazon. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074L29WHD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_CPpZBbMFXA505
But those things are just as loud as using a mallet. I think a handcrank ice crusher would be the “quietest” solution. Definitely go vintage too because modern day replicas are mostly made of plastic.
We had to find something like this for my grandma - we got one of these.
It's an ice shaver/snow cone maker - you just put cubed ice in and turn the handle till the ice is the size you want.
I would give it a 8 out of 10.
It comes with 2 containers to freeze the ice in. I use both containers three times a day, unless I have to work, then sadly only twice a day due to freezing times. It fits on the counter just fine, was only $50, can give you nicely shaved ice. It can do ice cubes too, but then will always spit out "snow cone" stuff (tiny icy particles), not the coveted fluffy snow stuff.
There are times I think about getting an industrial shaved ice machine to 100% always deliver fluffy snow. This one is about 85% of the time. There's a way to do it per the manufacturer (only pushing on the button with medium pressure and setting the ice out for 5 min first to temper it) but I swear sometimes that doesn't matter (I don't temper the ice and press the button as hard as possible and get perfect fluffiness. Or I do everything by the book and get icy stuff.) Just to clarify, lots of people love the icy snow cone stuff, it's just not my preference. I still eat it of course. XD
I have one of their flavorings "blue raspberry" and put it in an oil sprayer. I thought I would adore it, but I just really like the shaved ice by itself. The flavoring I use for toddler if he's not getting in enough fluids that day and isn't trying to automatically steal mommy's shaved ice. (I give him his own cup but it tastes better from mommy's bowl.)
Lots of people recommending Bingsoo here, and while that is great, it's different from the Hawaiian shave ice you're talking about. Bingsoo is made from shaved frozen milk, so it's creamier and often has more elaborate toppings, whereas the shave ice OP is looking for is literally shaved frozen ice with a syrup flavor and sometimes ice cream added underneath.
OP, I too had a huge craving for Hawaiian shave ice after visiting there years back, and I actually found a pretty good affordable personal machine that came with some syrups and ice molds, and it worked fantastic! It wasn't QUITE as nice as the ones there, but definitely scratched the itch, and you can either buy syrups from the same company, or any other syrups really.

I don't have experience with it and I heard this kind of design has some durability issues but it's not too expensive so it might be worth a shot? There's a version for tea!! I don't drink coffee because it makes me ricochet off the walls but now I was totally getting FOBO. Now I can "quench" it!
You can make Icee's at home: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07XM9BPKH/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_DrAYFbXFKJF3A?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
My friend had one of these and it worked pretty well - not necessarily theater level, but close...
I bought this one from Amazon. Makes the cold brew, remove the grounds, store it in the same pitcher. The pitcher is airtight and easy to clean.

Get this or something like it for ease of use. Put in coffee grounds and water. Leave in the fridge for a day or so and shake a couple times.
For cheap coffee that you can find anywhere, Italian Roast comes our very smooth and chocolaty when cold brewed, which is plenty pleasant to drink black.
A French press is my preferred method for hot coffee as well.
When I want something sweet I eat a snowcone. All you need are some ice trays an Ice Shaver and some flavor to pour on top.
For me, I grind 20-30 ice cubes and it fills a large bowl and lasts me 20 minutes of sugary happiness for 50 calories (or less if you chose the low cal flavors but I don't bother).
Feels like I'm eating a full bowl of ice cream but at a fraction of the cost. Also don't keep shit in your house that you don't want to eat.
Yea I've got some Lipton sitting at home so might start with that (or the bags of English/Irish breakfast I've got), but the loose leaf you linked earlier certainly seems like a fine option. Have you ever tried cold brewing overnight for this? I've got one of these and it's worked pretty well for the fruit-flavored loose leafs that I like.
I talked to my roommate this morning. She was classroom aide for almost 20 years. She also handled cooking lessons and worked in accounting for years. During coffee this morning we talked about this. You need to get some printable name tag labels. Print the information about your club, the school name, and any allergy information (caution contains nuts and eggs). Once you have the labels, have the students decorate them with markers. Get sandwich bags. Have the students put them on the sandwich bags. (None of this has to be perfect. Just let them do it.)
She suggested 3 items. A cookie, a bread, and a muffin. Sell them all for $1 to make it easier on you students. You will need about $40 in 1s to make change. Discourage any large bills like 10s and 20s. When you sell, have the students pass the baked items and handle the cash (you can double check the change).
She suggested getting the Jiffy blueberry mix for muffins. Two per bag. Something like a packed banana bread or something similar. Two slices per bag. Then you can make these. They are no bake cookies. You just need to make sure they cool long enough in the fridge. They work better if you place them on waxed paper so they don't stick to anything. You can put 2 or 3 in a bag depending on size.
We also talked about getting a snow cone machine come summer to earn some money.
I really want to get one, but it just doesn't brew enough for me. I brew 64oz every few days, so the size wouldn't cut it. I've messaged them multiple times suggesting a bigger one, who knows if they'll follow through.
Edit: For the record, here is one of my favorite devices for cold brew. Cheap, and brews 64oz easily!
Yup you can definitely do that. That's how I did my first few batches. I now use one of these. I know it says "Iced Tea Maker", but the one marketed towards cold brew is the same exact thing.
I've found that making cold brew is pretty forgiving. You can use less than ideal beans and come out with a decent product. And you can easily scale up the size of your brewing vessel so long as you have some method of filtering out the grounds.
I fill the bong with 'snow', finely shaved ice made by a device like this: link to Amazon
So no water goes in, just scoops of snow ice, and I have a little 'ramrod' piece of cut broom handle(you could make one from a million difff things) I use to push the snow to the bottom easily to make filling it quick and easy. As you pull your hits through snow will melt, top off the top with fresh snow. It's the pinnacle of smoking that I've ever done or heard of, as far as I'm concerned.
I got here out of necessity, not looking to 'geek out' or 'be cool'. I smoke a lot, and I have to consider the damage from combustion and mitigate it. I hardly cough, and I'm a heavy smoker. I think this method is good for your health.
I use this for ice: http://www.amazon.com/Electric-Shaved-Ice-Machine-Hawaiian/dp/B004UBMRKG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1429830057&sr=8-1&keywords=ice+shaver
We tried several kinds of syrup, stuff we bought and simple syrup I made (1 cup water to 1 cup sugar), different bourbons.
I think the winner was WT101, 1 oz syrup, ice with fresh mint.
