Same thing happened to me when I moved to DC a couple months ago. It made my skin so dry that I started developing eczema on my eyelids which was super painful and a bit scary looking.
Another redditor on this sub recommended this water filter for my shower and it’s been a huge help for my skin! Super easy to install as well
Added to my shower head after the fact!
I got an AquaBliss shower filter off of Amazon. It’s like $34 and really helped fix my hair. You can find my pre-filter hair after my move to Colorado in my post history.
I sleep with a humidifier too! I don’t know if that makes a difference, though!
Recent transplant here. My aversion wasn't as strong as yours, but my first reaction to the tap water was similar. Some things you can do:

This! I too have a sensitivity to the water at my home and got one of those cheap shower head water filters off of Amazon. They're pretty easy to install, and is say 95% fixed my issue. Well worth the money.
Edit: This is the one. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01G7AZB96/
>If it is hard water, installing a soft water filter is not an option.
Do you know about these $20 showerhead filters?
AquaBliss High Output Revitalizing Shower Filter - Reduces Dry Itchy Skin, Dandruff, Eczema, and Dramatically Improves The Condition of Your Skin, Hair and Nails - Chrome (SF100) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MUBU0YC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_gex7DbMH1N21H
I'm in a rental and I installed a shower-head only filter that just screwed onto the existing shower head (and you can set the existing provided shower head aside and reattach when you move out) I found it on Amazon, it's this one "Aquasana A1-4100".
Yeah I actually dealt with something very similar. I too have long, healthy, thick hair that became very dry and gross after moving somewhere with hard water. I recommend buying a water filter for hard water, I bought one from amazon for $25 You can also use an Apple cider vinegar rinse to help clarify your hair. I recommend using shampoos and conditioners that do not have silicones or sulfates, as silicones prevent moisture from entering your hair cuticles and sulfates are drying. I have been using indie shampoo and conditioner bars for years that don’t strip your hair of their natural oils. Any try to wash your hair only twice a week. My hair feels pretty much normal now mostly because of the filter and the acv, but avoiding certain hair products is also important.
My advice is just my opinion and based off what I do to make my thick wavy hair look good.
Buy a shower filter Makes a slight difference in water quality and I’ve noticed for sure helps my hair not be so puffy and broken.
Quit combing and brushing your hair. You’re killing your natural curl pattern like that. Stick to fingers and only fucking w it at the root.
I use conditioner literally every time I shower on my ends. I use Shea moisture strengthen n restore conditioner. I have more of a problem with dry hair and scalp and this helps. I only use the Shea moisture shampoo every maybe four or so days when I feel like I need it.
I use Shea moisture strengthen n restore leave in conditioner like 15min after getting out of the shower every time I shower and I just lift my ends with it with a gentle scrunch and kind of pat the sides and top w it being careful to cause loose strands.
I use Shea moisture 100% pure Argan oil after w the same lifting ends and patting method.
After I do that I let my hair air dry and just go about my day and it’s on god mode every fucking day. Im a bartender at an outdoor bar in humid ass Austin tx and it still looks fire even after an entire 8hrs of getting drunk and flirting with chicks haha. I’m not a hair stylist or anything so I’m not sure if this will work for you but you can get all these products at target, the ingredients list seems to be clean as FUCK. And I’ve tried a bunch of different shit and this routine seems to be a fucking KEEPER for my hair. Some people say that might be too much conditioner but I’ve never had healthier, cleaner hair than I do now. Cheers man.
i've had it for almost 2 years now, but you do have to change the filter every 6 months or so. i've forgotten to replace the filter before and didn't notice a difference until maybe 10 months in tho
I used to use a shower head that filtered out the hard water- it had lots of filters in it- something similar to this: https://www.amazon.com/AquaBliss-Output-12-Stage-Shower-Filter/dp/B01MUBU0YC/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Water+Softener+Shower+Heads&qid=1614094837&sr=8-1

I use this one. There's people posting reviews showing tests being done on the water with the showerhead applied saying that it works.
From the time that I've used it I can say that it's pretty good.
For your face you can also just boil the water, or run it through a water filter like a brita and that'll also work.
Under $20! I got this cheap Sprite water filter because it fit my shower and they have it at my nearby Lowe's. There are tons of cheap well-reviewed ones on Amazon.

I have an RO right now but I plan on buying a few Berkeys for the future. I saw one guys set up where he had the Berkey connected to his rain gutters so he had filtered rain water to drink all the time. The dream!
They are awesome! AquaBliss High Output Revitalizing Shower Filter - Reduces Dry Itchy Skin, Dandruff, Eczema, and Dramatically Improves The Condition of Your Skin, Hair and Nails - Chrome (SF100) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MUBU0YC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_BuXmFb0R7BCA9
I use a shower filter! You can get one on Amazon for like $30 so it's not too bad and tbh it has made a big difference in my skin so I find it to def. be worth it! https://www.amazon.com/AquaBliss-Universal-Replaceable-3-Stage-Cartridge/dp/B01G7AZB96/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1472572964&sr=8-4&keywords=shower+filter
Speaking of the shower, do you live in an area with hard water? My skin was brittle and itchy until I learned about hard/soft water. I kept buying all these moisturizers and still nothing. If you do live in an area with hard water, this filter might be a great option to install onto your shower head. It’s definitely helped me :) Ashy arms and legs no more!
Buy one of these for your shower, it might help. Tucson has really hard water.

I am a dude, but I bought this shower head after reading a study about how hard water can cause hair loss.
Personally, I don't like the berkey shower filter- that's if you can even find it in stock. I use this Aquabliss one and usually replace it every few months b/c my city water is bad.

If you have hard water get a water softener nozzle attachment. It helps immensely! I had the same issue and feel like my hair is bouncing back when i do my treatments
There are water softener attachments for your shower!!
https://www.amazon.com/Water-Softener-Shower-Head-Replaceable/dp/B01L94O060
I’ve seen them cheaper but as a general idea, it’ll help if that’s your only issue!
I don’t know about the one linked above, but this one is much more affordable. I’ve had one for years, works like a charm if you change the filter every 6 months or so. Yes, you do have to remove the shower head to install. Have you tried using a pair of pliers on your shower head? It could just have some plumber’s tape on the threads that you need to break.
They have a filter built into the head, either in line or underneath. Much like a whole house system, just smaller scale.
https://www.amazon.com/Water-Softener-Shower-Head-Replaceable/dp/B01L94O060
Do you have hard water? If so, I recommend this and changing the filter every 6 months. It’s really made a difference for my hair.
I like this one:
AquaBliss High Output... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MUBU0YC?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
And I change the filters every 6 months. Have them on subscribe & save so I don’t forget. I also wash ~1x/month with Malibu C hard water shampoo which helps (but is harsher/drying so I use it when I deep condition my curly hair)
I haven’t done a water test yet! I’ll do one soon and let you know
Hi! I have the same problem. I got this shower filter and I like it a lot! I also do a clarifying wash once a month or so. I alternate between the Ion Hard Water Shampoo and the Ouai Detox Shampoo.
I've noticed that my hair is softer and gets less greasy. My skin is much happier, also!
I have this one https://www.amazon.com/AquaBliss-Output-12-Stage-Shower-Filter/dp/B01MUBU0YC/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1UL1MGH92KHLI
It made showers significantly less painful.
Maybe I got a fake product, but I personally didn’t like Keratese when I bought it off Amazon. So, take my opinion with a grain of salt!
A lot of rogue hair dressers sell bulk 72oz bottles of olaplex shampoo and conditioner on eBay. I’ve bought it twice from two different sellers and both quality products. Pricey (about $300 for both), but it lasts me and my husband a full year.
I don’t wash everyday BECAUSE the hard water is sooooo crappy for hair and scalp health. Also, since I dont wash everyday (3x a week max, often 1-2x), I use a clarifying shampoo at least once a month. Nothing fancy, just Neutrogena and it works wonders. However, I’m planning on using Malibu Clarifying shampoo my next wash :)
I use this shower filter:
15 Stage Shower Filter - Shower... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VM98BRF?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I also put an AquaSana home filter on my home as well. I’m not sure how much it filters on its own, but they do pick up tonnnnsss of stuff when I end up cleaning/swapping out the filter itself.
Other than that, I do an at home keratin treatment (salon quality product off Amazon) once every six months or when I feel my hair matting lol Rejuvenol Brazilian 24hours... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KTESK5Y?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share also pricey, but I get 50+ treatments off that one bottle, as opposed to paying $300 at a salon to do it once.
I went overboard with more info, but I hope it helps. The oiling, shampooing less, shower filter has helped 90% of the problem - the other 10% is me being extra lol
