I sped up to make it through a yellow light at an intersection. The intersection was one of those sharp transitions from a downhill to a flat. There was a pothole right at the transition and it bounced me off. I ended up falling off the back of my MSX and landing on my ass, then rolled and slid across the intersection on my hands and knees.
I was wearing all my gear including my BodyProx hip/butt protection which I never usually wear and it really saved me. The hip/putt protection is under used IMO. My other gear was Leatt Dual Axis knee pads, Fox Titan full upper body armor, and this wrist guard/glove setup. There is road rash on all of my gear but I didn't get a scratch. My left butt cheek slammed against the pavement so its pretty sore, and my entire body feels sore like I got in a car crash (or like I have the flu) but I feel really lucky and if anything I'm more confident now and less scared to fall.
My MSX needs new side pads, I had some home-made ones on there and they took most of the damage. Case looks like someone took a belt sander to it in a couple spots but the shell didn't split like they do in a lot of MSX falls.
Get some wrist guards at lest!

I broke my wrist a couple years ago . I’m 49 now, wish I had these!
Good luck, have fun, it’s a blast!!!! 🤙🏽
You've got the flowchart, but please also read this page, and look at the .gif at the bottom showing good body positioning. Never "lean" to go - instead, shift hips back and forth, extending one knee/leg while retracting the other, as though the front pad is a gas pedal and the back pad a brake pedal. And always accelerate gradually and gently (never "leadfoot" it), especially from a dead stop or uphill or into a headwind, anytime the motor is working hardest. Use switchbacks on steep inclines to reduce the grade, and if you feel the board surging (rushing to keep under you) that should be treated like pushback, as a warning to back off because the board can't give what you're asking.
Here's some good wristguards with hand/finger protection (I assume you have a helmet, if you don't, get one).
Sorry to hear. I wear these.
For reference, I was planning on getting these zealous brand bearings specifically because they seem to last really long and don't need much maintenance once they're broken in, whereas something like bones reds seems to need cleaning/replacing a lot more often. Can somebody attest to the quality of these? Is there another good pair of bearings that's particularly low maintenance and a bit more "set it and forget it"?
There's probably vids on YouTube for what's acceptable noise and change noises. I have been running stock bearings on the drive wheels and zealous on front for over 600mi on the v1 and about 200 mi on the v2. Put them in when I got the boards and haven't changed since.
Skip the ceramics, these free spin at least as long as bone ceramics and are cheap to replace. Zealous bearings on amazon https://www.amazon.com/Zealous-Bearings-Longboards-Skateboards/dp/B00BL9VCRE
I'm looking for a deck to replace the one on this Amazon board I use: Quest Super Cruiser Artisan Bamboo Longboard Skateboard, 44" https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008EZNY4W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_6N2OzbZ1A890D
The deck that came with it is stiff and heavy, I'm looking for one that's light and has a some flex to it so I can make tighter turns and eventually do some tricks. Are there any (preferably drop through) decks with two kicktails that are less than $80?
Looking to get into longboarding but I don't want to throw all of my money at an expensive board in case I don't like it. Has anyone here ever tried a Quest board? They have a lot of good reviews on Amazon and they are really inexpensive but I want to know if there are any better intro boards.
Edit: I would just use my board for cruising around. I don’t see myself doing any of the downhill stuff that’s on this sub
Large arms and legs here.
For knee pads I used Deadbolts XL for awhile, but they twisted a lot and I was afraid of landing on my knee. I now just switched to the S1 knee pads in 2xl and honestly I could go down to an XL but luckily their straps are adjustable as they stretch out over time.
For elbow and wrist I use this set from amazon: https://www.amazon.com/JBM-international-Adult-Guards-Protective/dp/B00GG7AYLG/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1521169840&sr=8-3&keywords=jbm%2Bpads&dpID=51mZntlwyeL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch&th=1&psc=1 The wrist guards have saved my wrists multiple times and the elbow pads work fine. The straps on the elbow pads are long enough but I added in an inch or so of fabric to the sleeve for comfort, although they were wearable before.
I actually rock armored boxers and then seperate kneepads/shinguards as well, my regular jeans fit great over all of that just fine. I even wear elbowpads under my jacket because the armor that is in the jacket is shit and moves all over the place. I did just get a newer jacket that fist better, is adjustable and has better armor, so i may not need the elbowpads now, but still gonna rock the kneepad/ armored boxers to work everyday.

thats what i wear for hip protection, several different models to choose from, same with the kneepads.
They sell padded shorts on Amazon that are meant for that sort of thing. Like these.
Not sure what kind of hip injury you have, but I wear these padded shorts underneath my pants every ride, they've taken a couple hip strikes on concrete. It didn't feel GOOD, but it didn't even bruise. Well worth 30 bucks to prevent re-injury.
Hey guys,
So recently I bought a longboard from Amazon, the Atom drop through longboard.
Atom Drop Longboard - Green, 41 Inch https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0056IY39K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_dVRkBbZ5TQ211
Have I made a mistake in buying this as I'm very very new to longboarding and wasn't sure whether I'd enjoy it but I've soon found that reviews of this board were actually paid promotions.
What I've enjoyed doing so far is carving and I'm trying to learn to slide at the moment.
Is this a poor choice and if so could you recommend a good brand for that kind of boarding please?
Apologised for the essay 😂
Yeah, looks like Amazon has a decent set of pads (elbow, wrist, knee) for just over $20. Teenage me is shaking his head in disapproval, but old, fat, decrepit current-day me really does not want to spend two weeks gimping around after a low-speed spill.
I recommend investing in some pads and a helmet that covers the back of your head if/when you can, I don't think you'll regret it. I used these cheap pads last year, the knees fell apart fast but they got me through a lot and the wrist/elbow pads were in great shape. If you buy nicer pads like 187's they'll last forever. As for a helmet...don't cheap out. Buy from Triple 8 or Protec, they're known brands and will protect your noggin well.
Until you can get your hands on that stuff though, just push yourself slowly and skate within your limits, and you'll have fewer limits every day. You've got this, you're already doing great!
Glad to help! I’m like you I always want to push it and know I’ll pay the price sooner or later. I wear my shorts over them so no one knows haha. Good luck looking forward to more posts!

I don't own these, but I use a lot of triple8 gear and I've never had it fail on me.
Current pair - pricey (20% off rn for Black Friday tho) but have D30 so are slimmest and super-protective.
Prior pair - took a couple hits and worked fine, much cheaper, a little bulkier but still unnoticeable under shorts. No D30.
I’ve really been liking these half finger wrist guards from Hillbilly. My hands are your size and they fit great and give comfortable protection.
Hope you find something that works for you! 🤙
Fuck. It's like an accident ward in here today.
If/when you get back on, maybe some padded undershorts to protect that hip? I use these; they're pricey but they have D30, which is just about the gold standard for impact absorption pads (they are soft but immediately become rigid on impact, dispersing/absorbing the energy that way). Also pretty slim/visually-unnoticeable and comfy, though they do add heat.
If that's too expensive, I used to use these. I don't think they are quite as protective but they worked fine when I fell on them and they were also visually-unnoticeable under pants/shorts.
I think so. They have a stretchy sleeve and straps on the outside of that, so I'd imagine you can just not use the stretchy part and use only the straps. Two of the Amazon reviews mention pants, but no specifics.
I have a set of these for friends: https://www.amazon.com/JBM-international-Adult-Guards-Protective/dp/B00GG7AYLG/ and they have that setup with an optional stretchy sleeve and straps. Those, at least, can definitely be used with only the straps.
Appreciate it! I picked up a comparable product but may return it and go with triple eight instead. Hopefully you heal up too! Injuries are no fun.
I've had those T8's and they're good. If you're looking for something similar but much cheaper, I found these do the job just as well.
And recently I upgraded to these - while they are pricey (but note that site gives you a 15% off coupon for first-time purchases you can use) and I haven't yet fallen on them (and hope not to), they are less bulky than either, but should be more protective, due to the D30.
Zealous is great for the price. If you can find them, go with them.
Here are a few online sites for Canada that have them:
https://www.amazon.ca/Zealous-Bearings-Longboards-Skateboards/dp/B00BL9VCRE (I know, don’t buy from Amazon if you can avoid it)
I swear by these as a guitarist, and judging by the deep scratches I have in the splints, they have saved me from significant injury: https://www.amazon.com/Triple-Hired-Hands-Black-Large/dp/B003BAJKVQ/ref=sr\_1\_2?crid=1JCGOJLAJXYNH&keywords=Triple+Eight+Hired+Hands+Skateboarding+Wrist+Guard+Gloves&qid=1658876225&sprefix=triple+eight+hired+hands+skateboarding+wrist+...
i use these:

also have their knee and elbow pads. there are better ones, albeit higher in price. if you can, try to get returned/open box ones off amazon to save $.
Hey everybody.
What hip pads do y’all use for downhill? I got these “BodyProx” off Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KJJ3YF3/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_2SP4EYAY58RMHDV7KN4E?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1) and twice I have gotten big, nasty, elongated bruises in the spaces in between the pads. Are there better ones out there?
Thanks!
