Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy series. Either the 2nd or 3rd book I believe? They're all fairly short, I bought ultimate edition on Amazon and get all like 5 of them together.
Edit: for everyone asking, here's the book I got
The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
https://www.amazon.com/dp/0345453743/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_8nOngEkZkw2tO
Even better, develop a game about it and have people play that on Twitch. But, without telling them, set up the real thing somewhere which they are actually controlling. Perhaps not unlike the plot of a certain Masterpiece sci-fi novel.
For everyone asking, I'll post the book link. Just know this is a HUGE spoiler for the novel so if you care about that kind of thing, I warned you. Link to the book
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - i no longer takes my problem too seriously after reading this

The End of Procrastination - it really helps to put your life in order
Amazing how people get upset over piracy, like it's their right. Go buy the damn thing.
Here's a damn link, honestly it costs fuck all, stop being a tight arse.
Edit: Go ahead and downvote, but fuck me if you want something for free then take what you're given, if not then buy the damn thing.
Dune, by Frank Herbert. It's just a really good book. It's got everything: politics, religion, romance, good v evil, adventure, magic, science, poetry, beautiful description, excellent dialogue. It's one of my all-time favorites. I read it again last year for the first time in about 20 years, and it was still amazing. Re-reading the rest of the series this year.
Actually, that's been a thing since at least 1991; the TNG Technical Manual Rick Sternbach wrote is the earliest reference to it I can recall offhand. To be fair, Discovery was the first on-screen reference to it.
Like other commenters have mentioned, this is the most current edition, so it'll be easy to find anywhere that sells new books. I got mine at Barnes and Noble. :) It's such a beautiful cover and I confess that it was definitely a big factor in getting me to finally pick up Dune and read it. Now I'm absolutely obsessed!
There is one thing the other commenters haven't mentioned, though — there are two paperback versions of this cover. There's the "nice" version which is taller and narrower, and it has a beautiful matte finish. And then there's the mass market paperback, which is shorter and fatter. It's not as nice, but it still has a cool silver shine on the "DUNE" logo. The former is 8.2" x 5.4" and has about 700 pages, and the latter is 7.6" x 4.2" with about 900 pages.
For most people, it comes down to personal preference on which one is better, though it seems like most people prefer the "nice" version. But here's one thing you should know: They just released the five Dune sequels in the same cover art style, and they're only available in mass market paperback dimensions. For people who want to own the whole series, they might want the mass market version of the original Dune so it can fit nicely with the other books. Otherwise, you'll have a tall, thin Dune book with all its sequels next to it in a different size.
I personally own the bigger one. It's really nice and the size discrepancy doesn't bother me, but it might be worth knowing what your friend's preferences are on this sort of thing :)
They are, and they're even in print! The whole trilogy is on Amazon, in one volume. Link. I could have sworn there was also a kindle edition, but I don't see it on that listing.
Star Trek The Next Generation: Technical Manual
Basically goes through and explains all about how the ship works from an in-universe point of view. It's actually really fun to see all the explanations they came up with for everything.
The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy includes all 5 that were written by Douglas Adams. The one I have on my shelf has a different cover than what Amazon currently shows, but it looks like it's all there. There is another Hitchhiker's book by Eoin Colfer working on Douglas Adams' notes called And Another Thing... you might also want to check out. Though you're probably better off switching to Dirk Gently before you get to that one.
The best sci-fi book series to come out in a very long time! The first book is Leviathan Wakes; five more have been written so far, and three more are scheduled to come out over the next three years (and the authors have been pretty good about keeping to that schedule, unlike a certain fantasy author we all know and love).
If reading books isn't your jam or you don't have time, there are also audiobooks some fans swear by. There's also a TV show which just wrapped up its second season, which you can get on Amazon Prime in the US and Netflix everywhere else.
If you like sci-fi that does its best to stick to actual science, space battles, political intrigue, and likeable characters who grow more complex with every book, I highly reccommend it!
If they're talking like that because George was trying to be shakespearean, then shouldn't he at least have made an effort to write the dialogue in iambic pentameter?
Way to be a lazy ass, Lucas. Ian Doescher had to pick up the slack for you.
Can confirm...
I even have this book : Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual Star Trek Next Generation Unnumbered: Amazon.de: Sternbach, Rick, Okuda, Michael: Fremdsprachige Bücher
So that is at least a PHD worth i guess
For starters, just buy the first book $10-15. Dune in Amazon
If you like it (which I can think you will) then start doing the sequels. The movie is based on the first book only, so no need to buy the whole series.
Secondly, the first 100 pages throws a lot of worldbuilding and new words at you, don’t be turned off by that, it’s only really in the beginning, and even if you don’t look things up, it all makes sense and context in given.
Thirdly, I have never read a book so long, so quickly. To me it IS the definitive page turner. Yes, some concepts are heavy, but this is a thoroughly enjoyable book in my mind. I didn’t find it tedious, it moves at a wonderful pace.
Finally, it really is considered one of the greatest sci fi books ever for a reason and you’ll only know that through experiencing it. No need to buy everything, no need to get extended lore, just buy the first book and dive in, just like people did in the 60’s when I first came out.
That's a nice edition right there. Definitely not the one I'm chasing, though, it's a bit out of my price range. This one is the one I'm getting:
https://www.amazon.com/Dune-Deluxe-Frank-Herbert-dp-059309932X/dp/059309932X/
Dune (Dune Chronicles, Book 1)
It could be because the series is 40ish years old, if you’re younger there’s a chance that you’ve missed it with all the other fantasy/sci-fi out there.
If you’re into sci-fi it’s worth a read.
on amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Dune-Chronicles-Book-1/dp/0441013597/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=dune&qid=1609986173&sr=8-2) that edition is listed as 'Dune (Dune Chronicles, Book 1)' and has 704 pages. The reason some editions have so many pages is because they use larger font.
Amazon has it for as little as $4 (0.01+3.99 s/h), used.
https://www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-Next-Generation-Technical/dp/0671704273
There is also an "Interactive" CD-ROM version, designed for Windows 3.x. While it is interesting, and does cover some of the same material, it is its own work, and in the end, covers far less. The video quality is also severely lacking in 2016, and getting it to work is not straightforward.
Oh my, yes you are right. I didn't look it up as I thought I could trust my memory. But I guess not haha.
That's wrong. Earth definitely attacked Deimos, both book and show.
Search inside the text on Amazon for "Deimos" for the relevant passages in the book.
Edit: I realize there was a typo in CW, but that was clearly a mistake, as later books are consistent with LW.
You can get Tomino's original trilogy of Gundam novels inexpensively on Amazon.
Yeah, the titles don't spoil much.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/0441172717/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_5MIiFbZKMWH48
This is the first book and the movies will be based on this book reportedly but we really don't know much.
Frank wrote 6 books and you can find a set of 6 as well if you'd like that instead, I ended up buying it after reading just the first. I doubt they'll all be made into movies though.
Looks like the Ace Publication Dune Paperback
Yeah 3 distinctly different ones for 0079. Animation, novel and the origin manga.
The audible link given doesn't show sample pages, so here's some: https://www.amazon.com/William-Shakespeares-Star-Wars-Doescher/dp/1594746370
In short: Shakespearean language. It's pretty great, I have a copy.
Maybe this might happen before we can experience multiplayer VR via mind control. The middle of that page shows an excerpt from the Star Trek Technical Manual written by two technical advisors on the Star Trek: The Next Generation" TV show.
In the manual they describe how the Holodeck worked, as seen in the screenshot shows. People in the Holodeck didn't have to wear anything to be convinced that what happened around them was real.
According to the technical manual, the computer created force field beams that people could walk and run on without moving. The computer projected distant holographic imagery. And, according to the manual, real temporary matter was created as needed so that people could touch a temporary human, sit in a temporary chair or feel temporary snow.
If holographic projectors and force field beams don't exist 1000 years from now, maybe they will 50,000 years from now. The hard part might be the matter replicators.
Just to be clear (I'm sure it's not clear to a lot of people):
The 6-book set are the six trade paperbacks.
The 3-book box has mass market paperbacks, so if you want the rest to match that size, you'll have to go for those.
Trade paperback (ISBN 0441013597)
Mass market paperback (ISBN 0441172717)
On Amazon: Dune (Dune Chronicles, Book 1)
If you're referring to this book-
it's probably one of the finest examples of lore building I've ever seen.
> tiny versions
I think many people are still not aware that there's two different paperback formats.
What you're looking at are mass market paperbacks—as opposed to trade paperbacks. The latter format's considerably larger, with better binding and paper quality.

From a textual standpoint, the most recent Ace paperbacks and all editions using the same text (Deluxe hardcover) are the most correct. They clearly proofread all the books since the texts are just about error-free now. Messiah and Children in particular used to have lots of typos.
