Edit: So I provide an article with legitimate information supporting the claim, and people downvote. Got it.
Edit 2: I was right. Amazon 4K HDR video being advertised with the new Shield! https://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-SHIELD-TV-Streaming-Media-Player/dp/B01N1NT9Y6
https://www.amazon.com/Nyrius-Transmitter-Streaming-Projector-NPCS549/dp/B009E6R89C there's numerous wireless HDMI transmitters, and the drone community is working on a 1080 low latency wireless standard.
it's noteable the same service from silicondust/hdhomerun is $3/mo
https://www.silicondust.com/dvr-service/
while it will be $0/mo this Fall when Amazon jumps into this market

I've bought one of these great, great Amazon Fire TV Sticks and it has not set anything on fire. Total fake news. Very amazing product. ^(Really, really great.)
Amazon Fire TV Stick -- A great gift for people who don't yet have a "smart TV." Our TV is almost 10 years old, and there's nothing wrong with it, so we don't want to waste money on a new television. For that reason, the Fire TV Stick is perfect for us!
r u serious trying to sell a 40 product on here for 85. A 3 year old can load kodi
I just moved to Hungary and realized that I packed my Roku in the shipping container, which won't arrive for another month or so. No worries, I'll just pop on Amazon and order another one.
It's nearly $100 more expensive on German Amazon (125 Euros) vs US Amazon ($50). I just ordered it off the US Amazon and paid an extra $20 in shipping & import fees to have it sent to Hungary.
So did Amazon leak the price of the new Shield and the release date?
$199.99 and January 16th. Kind of disappointed that they didn't lower the price. https://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-SHIELD-TV-Streaming-Media-Player/dp/B01N1NT9Y6
Also note how Amazon Video is shown in the list of apps in the picture below.
According to Amazon, it comes out on January 16, with a Pro version releasing at the end of the month.

~~Not going to lie, I'd much rather have a new Portable, though.~~
Our current Cox bill is $84 because we do internet only.
If he'd able to get the hang of using a firestick or chromecast, you could hook him up with a Netflix and Hulu account and he could have more options than he'd know what to do with (and get some bunny ears for his TV so he could still watch local news, PBS, sports etc).
May not be the answer you're looking for, but it's a very good way of cutting that bill in half!
1) Youtube has never been a stable form of income. That's why most long-time, big-name Youtube channels also have Patreon pages and are constantly shilling either their own merchandise or a sponsor's merchandise.
2) I don't evangelize Linux anymore because most people don't own computers anymore. The vast majority of ordinary folks center their entire digital life around their cellphones. These same people have jailbroken Fire sticks to watch Netflix and pirate video off of Exodus TV.
The only people that are still stuck with personal desktops and laptops are students, engineers / developers, and hardcore gamers. Engineers and developers don't need to be sold on Linux. Students are just going to use whatever is already installed on their University mandated laptop. And hardcore gamers are locked into Windows because it's more convenient than dual booting, keeping two versions of Steam installed and still not being able to play half of your games because of Wine incompatibilities, or GPU passthrough.
Desktops and laptops aren't dead, but they've certainly retired to the dual status of office equipment and hobbyist toy.
Also the game controller bundle is also on sale for $179.99 (the original price of the streaming bundle).
It's only $20 off. But if you're thinking about gaming even a little bit, or want always listening Google Assistant, it's cheaper than buying the streaming bundle and adding a controller later. The controller by itself retails for $60, and I don't think I've ever seen the controller go on sale.
Edit: Amazon has the same price for the controller edition. But not on the one without the controller. https://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-SHIELD-Streaming-Player-Controller/dp/B01N1NT9Y6?crid=AINDDPS7JGVE
it depends on what plastic you buy. Many people mold things out of Kydex (an ABS/PVC blend) with just a heat gun or their oven. A vacuum pump will get you crisper details, but it might not be necessary for what you're doing (search for videos on vacuum forming or thermoforming).
Generally:
make a mold: it can be positive, or negative, or have both halves
heat a sheet of plastic (3mm kydex, for example). You could do this with a heat gun, or in an oven
drape the warm plastic over the mold and force it into the small places. Some people push on it, some use vacuum pressure, it depends on if you have surfaces you can scratch (the backside).
you may want this contoured part to be glued into a box. Many plastics will weld one of several ways: chemical, ultrasonic, or heat. So you might be able to assemble a pretty square shape (like the Amazon Fire) similar to the way people build acrylic fish tanks.
EDIT: like this? https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Fire-TV-Streaming-Media-Player/dp/B00U3FPN4U
it's a rectangle... you can cut flat panels and glue them up
Found the new one on Amazon, has the new controller
Marketing info is the same/similar as the old Shield TV
e.g.
old
> Expand your entertainment with the best gaming streamer experience that’s 3X more powerful than Apple TV.
new
> It's everything you want in one game-changing device that's 3X faster than competitors
So its probably the same, which explains why they didn't talk about improved performance during the keynote
Well, I'd be willing to buy them and mail them to you. The only hang-up being giving your address to an internet stranger.
Also, relating to our convo one comment up: you could try getting an Amazon Fire Stick or Chrome Cast. Then you could watch the YouTube versions without having to plug in your computer every time. Unless you have to use a VLAN or something to get access to the YouTube videos.
Also, if you have a DVD burner you could download the YouTube videos then burn them to a DVD.
There are hundreds of different wireless VGA / wireless HDMI products on Amazon. Some cheap, some expensive. Pick your poison. Read the reviews and research the products that have good reviews on other sites to verify the review. Below is one that looks to be highly rated.
I'm a big fan of the Amazon Fire Stick. It's $39.99 but runs an Android OS. You can sideload apps on it, which means you can install pretty much any Android app you'd like.
It's a little pricier, but I like the fact that it comes with a physical remote. Don't get me wrong, I love the Chromecast, especially for the price. Just wanted to drop another option in the mix for you.
I've heard terrible things about the Roku Vue app.
If you can, return the Roku and grab a Fire TV. My experience has been outstanding thus far, and overall, the Fire TV is a much more immersive and cohesive experience than the Roku.
It has the TV guide that you're looking for to see what's upcoming and all that good stuff.
You'll want the Roku Stick+, which just happens to be on sale basically everywhere for $55. You can get it via Roku, Target, Google, Amazon, etc. The current generation Stick+ is the only Stick+ they've made, so you shouldn't have issues finding the right version.

This will change with the new Fire TV Stick 4K with all-new Alexa Voice Remote, streaming media player will be released on October 31, 2018 https://www.amazon.com/Introducing-Fire-TV-Stick-4K-with-All-New-Alexa-Voice-Remote/dp/B079QHML21/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1539934424&sr=8-11&keywords=amazon+fire+stick#tech. This more than enough to handle anything Kodi has. I personally use and recommend a Nvidia Shield worth the cost to me. But the new 4K Fire TV Stick is cheap at 49.99
Did this Roku support page offer any guidance to help your situation? (See its links.) I admit I can't hear well enough to enjoy a high quality sound system so I haven't tried this.
For Fire TV stick and the Fire TV Cube, see the chart on this page for their technical details.
An Nvidia Shield Tv Pro could be a good option for you. https://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-Shield-Android-Streaming-Performance/dp/B07YP9FBMM/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=nvidia+shield+pro&qid=1621174062&sprefix=nvidia+shield&sr=8-1
It also works as a player.
I was looking at the pro model, this one, because of the tow usb 3.0 slots:
The tube seems to use micro usb.
I could not figure out why the other was $343 except for a different remote.
Mmmm I know this is well outside of this subreddit, but have you considered Fire TV Stick 4k? - https://www.amazon.com/Fire-TV-Stick-4K-with-Alexa-Voice-Remote/dp/B079QHML21
If you have [legally purchased] 4k movies on your local network, you can stream those with Plex Server (which can run on something like Synology NAS). Otherwise, it supports all streaming services pretty much, and 4k playback is excellent.
Seems dangerous to transmit that kind of power over the air.
You can get creative with power routing for sure though, and wireless video is already a thing. We use these in the office conference rooms to cut down on tripping hazards.
Yes you are. You are forgetting the unfriendliness of setting up a pi and troubleshooting problems. Burning the OS is easy, but setting up everything else? Well I hope you are great at knowing command lines that have been passed down from 30 years ago. If something doesn't work right, well that's your problem for doing something that the devs/community didn't support.
Grab the firestick. Netflix will work. HDR/Dolbyvision will work (4k stick that is $29.99 right now), and you won't need to worry about troubleshooting magical problems that just pop up. If you want "other" apps, install apktime, and go to town.
You can just use the 4K UHD Fire TV for $100 (still $100 less in total than the KS8000). I don't use Chromecast, but I have an Apple TV and I can mirror the Amazon Prime video to my television, not sure if the same.
The tablet can/will always have software updates.
Fire TV and Fire TV stick run the same software. The Fire stick is a bit more budget friendly but at a cost: UI navigation and load times are significantly slower. I highly recommend going with the Fire TV over the stick.

Sling and PS Vue are like Netflix or Hulu. They are monthly streaming services, but instead of choosing content from a library of stuff, you are watching live cable tv, legally. You'll install the app on the device, log in and away you go.
I commented with regard to the Kodi stuff in the other subthread.
