In this book, the author claims asking someone how happy they are means different things in different cultures. He says in Japan answering, "Yes, I am happy" is seen as bragging. In Scandinavia, however, being unhappy is something to be ashamed of, hence you will get only positive responses.
Scandinavian countries are also have some of the highest rates of anti-depressant use in the world.
Children of Ash and Elm: A History of the Vikings by Neil Price would be a good one. He is an accredited historian of Scandinavia where he is a professor in Sweden. What I would recommend is to read this and then to look at his notes/recommended reading section at the end of the book and branch off from there!

This is an english translation, don't know how good though, it was the first result om Google.
Hey there!
I highly recommend Children of Ash and Elm: A History of the Vikings by Neil Price and River Kings: A New History of the Vikings from Scandinavia to the Silk Roads by Cat Jarman. Both are absolutely fantastic reads, however, the second book focuses more on the expansion of Viking culture and trade into the far reaches of the world - from Ireland to Russia and the Middle East.
Doesn't help your western bent much, but I loved SPQR and was just as challenged by https://www.amazon.com/Children-Ash-Elm-History-Vikings/dp/0465096980
If you care for a book, then I can strongly recommend: Blood, fire, death
Don't forget Sweden. Never occupied (unlike literally all of its neighbors), traded with nazi Germany for solen gold (of which they later returned some but not all), let nazi troops pass through its territory, finally kind of towards the end started to be low key Allied.
A book in English on the topic was actually released recently. I've red it in Swedish and it's a good read.

Between Denmark and Sweden, please forgive me for heavy stereotyping, but:
Danes can be quite conservative when it comes to minority issues. For example, they don't make it easy for Romanian Roma beggars to settle in Denmark, but they will not make it easy for you either.
In comparison, Swedes think they have the obligation as the majority to adapt and to avoid offending minorities.

This is a really great book, and very entertaining also. I spent the first 22 years of my life in Norway and can tell you from experience that the "polls" used to show Scandinavia in general as a happy place are complete B.S.

That's because he wasn't a republican until the year 2010
It's pretty obvious this is all a giant show, they set up America to be this way. I didnt support obama when he was president I called America nazi Germany 1933 when he was in office. It wasn't until trump was elected that when i say this people believe me.
this book called the secret destiny of America outlines what's happening
But also 'the last president' does too
Sweden is what I was thinking when I said that - speaking of which, this is a fun non-fiction read - completely off topic and nothing to do with TRP though..
That is 100 years ago. Scandinavia had very detailed data on race purity, height, weight and all sots of parameters. Scandinavia used to be the bastion of Eugenics research and policy. There was a lot of money and effort put into who to sterilize and so on in the begining of the 1900s. The data is readily available, this book contains data from nationwide data collection in norway. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Eugenics-Welfare-State-Sterilization-Denmark/dp/0870137581
Here is a norwegian study of norwegian conscripts between 1935-1984 where height gains are correlated with intelligence. Height is partly genetic, but also to a large degree based on nurishment during childhood. After 1945 when the social democratic party was voted in there was several policy changes to give school children better food, you see the data on this when it's about 1955-60 where both average intelligence and height rises a lot. Oil was found in the beginning of the 80s so you do not see the effects of that in this particular study, but I assume you can if you look into it. http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0160289604000522
my teacher wrote it. I had to read it for a paper due at the end of class.
It was a pretty bleak description of sweden.
he is of swedish origin and lived in sweden and his wife is swedish.
During Christmas I read Fishing in Utopia: Sweden and the Future That Disappeared, written by a British guy that lived in Sweden with his then wife during late 70s and early 80s. It was for me (a Swede) a very interesting read. It may sound boring but it describes a lot of his love for fishing and what the nature and relative emptiness in Sweden meant for him. It also gives an idea about contemporary Swedish history and how much has changed in the last 30 years. I can witness about this myself. The "socialist Sweden" that was very much present in the 70s is now mostly gone while I think it is that image of Sweden that is still present abroad. I can recommend it (it was also recommended by the Economist as one of that year's better books).
