Roots and Steel by Casey White is a great read that follows monster hunters!
Blurb:
Where monsters go, hunters follow.
Hunters of the guild wait all year for the Festival of Knives, when they put their skills to the test and claim new ranks with every fiend they slay. Trapped helping the family business instead of pursuing his own career, Trellin has never been allowed to participate. But when he risks expulsion to sneak out and claim a kill beyond his rank, his hunt is spotted by a senior guildmember.
Rather than turn him in, she offers him a chance for freedom: Join her, and sail to the distant isle of Deldynne to compete in the bloody race for the rank of Guildmaster. If they can kill the monster that calls Deldynne home before the other teams do, he'll soar to new heights as apprentice to the leader of the Hunter’s Guild.
But not everyone wants his new mentor to be Guildmaster - and if they fail, neither will leave that island alive.
Apollos Thorne - no curse words in any books
books i've seen others recommend for kids:
> Roots and Steel is written to be a mostly-clean read! The worst you’ll see is an occasional ‘damn’. Because the story is about killing monsters, there is a fair bit of violence, but it’s written to be pretty non-graphic. I’d say the book is friendly to anyone middle school age or above!
> divine apostasy by a f kay - 'No swearing or cursing. This book is appropriate for younger readers (there is fighting against monsters).'
> Whispers of the Voidbringer by M. Allen Hall - Especially recommended for children discovering the magic of a mysterious world and the story hidden in it.
OH! Is it Legend by Marie Lu?!
Soul of the Warrior, MC starts as a child so minor spoilers about his build >!he starts out a pure warrior, but sees the value of magic so starts trying to add in magic elements to supplement his fighting style. He's a weapons allrounder but favours the sword.!<

I've been reading the Unbound series at the moment and the MC seems to be heading into the melee mage fighting style (though not precisely swords) - though he's Isekai'd into nowhere so has to hash together what he can to survive. >!Even though he ends up with a fair few ranged spells he never seems to sit back and snipe people, he basically always uses them to get into people's faces and pound them in close. !<
>Dissonance
for some reason I can't see the comment so here's the amazon blurb (also this book is 963 freaking pages)
DESCRIPTION A New World. A Thousand Threats. Welcome to The Continent.
Felix's life on Earth had become a series of dead-end jobs, ruined relationships, and rotating apartments smaller than most postage stamps. By all accounts, even his own, he was a coward. Too afraid to move forward, to take risks. Yet when given the chance to choose between risking his life or walking away from a deadly encounter, he didn't hesitate.
Moments before his untimely demise, Felix was snatched from earth and thrust into a magical world known only as ‘The Continent’. Empowered by the ‘System’, he learns that he can strengthen himself through combat and dedication. To survive he'll have to push himself beyond his limits, or else fall to the monsters all around him.
Levels, stats, and magic. Death is the start of a terrible fate, but if he lives…no one knows what he will become.

I got it on amazon but you can probably check a local bookstore :)
Give less money to Bezos and support local, you know.

My debut novel, Brilliant White Peaks launched today! It is a survival adventure story told from the perspective of a young wolf. Amazon link: https://www.amazon.com/Brilliant-White-Peaks-Teng-Rong-ebook/dp/B09F2LY8F6/
Here's the current version of the blurb: (I'm bad at blurb writing but I promise the story is good)
>A young male wolf is born to a small wolf family. Raised by a loving Ma and Pa, the young wolf slowly grows up with his shy sister White-Ears to be a ferocious hunter. However, while foraging for food in the winter, the family is attacked by a pack of hostile wolves, leading the young wolf and his sister astray from their parents.
>
>
Desperate to find his parents again, the young wolf slowly nurses White-Ears through her injuries and sets off for the ocean. When White-Ears finds herself a mate, the young wolf leaves to find a family of his own.
>
>
This story follows him and his companions as they battle harsh weather conditions, scarcity of food, and other predators to survive in the wild.
I hope you will check it out ❤️

Perhaps you could write it in an epistolary format.

Granted, this book is science-fiction, but there are certainly ways to write fantasy in a similar fashion.
Vera Nazarian's book, Qualify has a similar plot to Hunger Games. So far, there are three books, and a fourth in the pipeline...
There is Infection, by M.P. McDonald

I didn't read it yet, but it has some good reviews
Has anyone read Illuminae? It seems like it would be a pretty good book for this sub. I was gonna grab the Kindle version but the physical copy seems the better way to go because of all the pics and charts in the book.
Anyone read it?
Marie Lu does this in the Legend series.

The two main characters are named Day and June and the author changes POV at each chapter. And the chapter titles are either "Day" or "June"
It's a best selling book series and I had no trouble following it.
