The first book Sarah Ballantyne wrote has a ton of science but it’s less of a cook book. In fact it’s mostly about the AIP diet and lifestyle and the research she’s found to back it up. It’s a long book and goes deep into the immune system too.

Good question. Many people ignore their livers until it's too late. Here's a great book on the topic:
I’m so, so sorry to hear that you’re feeling like you are. It’s heartbreaking and shame on your doctor!
I’ve had Hashimotos pretty much my whole life but only got diagnosed four years ago and only this year have finally gotten proper medication. I too felt like you until I got the right kind of help.
I have a nurse practitioner whose specially trained in thyroid and hormone health and is on the other side of my country. You need to search for the right practitioner and for most it’s a daunting task. But your life depends on it. If you’re in Canada you can PM me and I can share my contact with you.
Izabella Wentz is a pharmacist who has Hashimotos and she struggled too to get help. She’s written a couple of really good books.
Hashimotos: Root Cause
Hashimotos Protocol
You really want to save your thyroid. These two books give hope.
She recommends Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN) And Myo-Inositol to help lower antibodies. These two have worked for me.
Other things can cause thyroid issues and antibodies to rise such as:
Mold, Environmental chemicals, household chemicals, body care products, low lying infections, heavy metals, B12 deficiency, anemia and more.
These are outlined in the books and you can order testing through her or she will tell you where to get them.
It sounds a little daunting but doing the research and finding the right help will improve the quality of your life.
All the best!
Check out The Salt Fix by James DiNicolantonio. After reading it I’ve started supplementing even more salt and salting my food more.
I suspect I have some kind of salt wasting condition. I have spoken to my doctors about this and run many tests and there is no medical explanation so far. I need quite high doses of salt so I ordered salt tablets to make it easier.
I haven’t been able to do longer fasts the closer i get to goal weight. For now I do IF exclusively with a fairly long window (7 hours).
You would need to look into this further to see if it's a good idea, but AIP is an elimination diet. It's primarily geared to people with autoimmune conditions, but if you'd be seeing a rheumatologist I'm guessing there's some overlap. It certainly is focused on lowering inflammation. If you implement it properly it's very healthy, but people tend to have a month or two where they aren't eating in a balanced way as they get the hang of the diet, you wouldn't want to take any risks with that. Another issue is that if you're not able to move that much you would need someone else to do a lot of the food prep. So, something to look into. https://www.amazon.com/Paleo-Approach-Reverse-Autoimmune-Disease/dp/1936608391/ref=sr\_1\_1?crid=2YXTGNRA34SHL&keywords=sarah+ballantyne+autoimmune+protocol&qid=1666991120&qu=eyJxc2MiOiIyLjQxIiwicXNhIjoiMS44OSIsInFzcCI6IjIuMjEifQ%3D%3D...
OP, I read this book a while back about how to heal the liver: https://www.amazon.com/Medical-Medium-Liver-Rescue-Gallstones/dp/1401954405
I didn’t know much about the liver before reading the book but appreciated the importance of the liver a lot more after reading it.
I don’t agree with 100% of what the book says but I did take away a few things I’ve implemented that have improved my health.
Good luck!
No problem! I really hope my solution gives you ideas on what to try. This book also talks about what I did. I bought it, but I never read it lol. Good luck mate
I was diagnosed with eczema 7 years ago. I tried everything to alleviate my symptoms, and I went through many dermatologists, to no avail. I've been drinking celery juice for a few months now and my symptoms, including rash, inflammation, dark circles around my eyes are finally improving. Seeing the results I was getting, my mother who was diagnosed with liver autoimmune a few years ago, started to drink celery juice and lemon water as well, and she's never looked back ever since. Her chronic constipation and bloating that she had been dealing with for years, is now a distant memory. For more information, read Liver Rescue by Anthony Williams. Anthony changed my life forever.
Not in your head. But there is no guarantee that meds (levothyroxin) will ever make your symptoms better. There is even a book about thyroid called "Why do I still have thyroid symptoms when my lab tests are normal: https://www.amazon.de/Still-Thyroid-Symptoms-Tests-Normal/dp/0985690402
Bummer!
>endometriosis
Regarding this, I would encourage you to look into the "autoimmune protocol" if you haven't already. It's basically an elimination "diet" (it's not a diet...you know what I mean lol. Maybe "program" is a better word?) to help with autoimmune issues . Below I linked a book that changed my wife's life completely. If you search through the comments, you'll find people who found relief from endometriosis following it. My wife was crippled with Rheumatoid Arthritis at the age of like 25 for two years until she changed her diet. Now she's roughly 90% better. https://www.reddit.com/r/AutoImmuneProtocol/
I would skip the sugar to avoid the empty calories, insulin peaks and crashed but stick with the salt. there is some good research oht there stating that manynif not most of us do not need to be on a salt restricted diet and should actually be getting MORE salt in our diets. Glad to help! My wife bought this and it helped her. Just know that it often reads like a medical journal, but it will explain why the change in food is needed. "Paleo approach" by Sarah Ballantyne. https://www.reddit.com/r/AutoImmuneProtocol/
I recommend Julia Ross’s book “The Mood Cure” which is specifically about amino acid supplementation for mental health, like 5-HTP. Cheesy name, but it’s very practical to use.
It contains a thorough questionnaire covering your symptoms regarding depression / mood, to help you figure out if your symptoms correlate with low serotonin, low dopamine, low GABA, or other types of neurotransmitter imbalances. It then discusses and explains what amino acids are most appropriate to take based on what type of depression pattern you have (which is to say, not every type of depression is associated with low serotonin, which is what 5-HTP increases).
The book discusses many other lesser-known types of neurotransmitter-raising amino acids and what they do.
True. You gotta be your own doctor with this. Check out https://www.amazon.com/Still-Thyroid-Symptoms-Tests-Normal/dp/0985690402 if you haven't already.
I recommend this book as well. It can help when your labs are truly optimal, other blood tests fine, and you still have Hoshimotos symptoms.
https://www.amazon.com/Hashimotos-Protocol-Reversing-Thyroid-Symptoms/dp/006257129X
I had this for years. How much salt did you try? I now need quite a bit of salt and buy 1g salt tablets on Amazon. I use about 4 a day. If I’m sick or on my period I need about double.
Read the salt fix to get details. I’d also recommend discussing it with your doctor.
Yes slowly healing my severe eczema (70 percent of my skin) with a diet sort of in-between Rob Stuart's protocols and Anthony William/medical medium. Eating super strict diet, vegetables, fruits, potatoes, beans and some meat and fish, and nothing else, I mean really nothing else at all. No gluten, no oats, no rice, no oils, no refined sugar, no cacao, no coffee, no alcohol, no shellfish, no soy, no vinegar. It get a reaction in 24 hours if I deviate.
I take b12 and zinc supplements, the ones recommended by medical medium, also a smoothie with blueberries, dulse sea weed and spirulina. And also, superimportaint: celery juice. It has gotten sort of a bad reputation being a health trend/fad a couple of years ago but it's really really good for me. I had IBS when I started this journey 3 years ago and that went away pretty fast when I introduced celery juice. For me it's obvious the eczema is connected to the gut somehow. I also suffered from a lot of chronic fatigue , insomnia and anxiety, which also has also healed during the time I have been on this diet.
I think both Rob Stuart and Anthony William are super problematic as practitioners and I wish that actual scientists would look into this and try to find out why these protocols works, but that's not happening at the moment. Especially Medical Medium is a deep dive into pure pseudo science.
In other words take everything with a grain of salt and follow your own intuition and common sense going into this. That being said, these methods has saved my life and I can highly recommend them to others with similar problems to mine. Learn to separate the man from the message and the pseudoscientific theories from the physical results of the methods and there is a lot of help to be found here!

Yes i test for candida and im high in igG only will see the doctor next week to talk about that. I have been reading books from amazon
https://www.amazon.com/Hashimotos-Thyroiditis-Lifestyle-Interventions-Treating/dp/0615825796
Made me go and do the test. So informative. Now trying to eliminate the candida !!! As i have athletes foots - and not sure about the guts
I looked it up and it is a specific serotonergic antidepressant. Since it effects serotonin so much, you can have the feelings your having. Serotonin is powerful, more so than people think. I recently started 5HTP to help with my serotonin production so I can ween myself off of Zoloft. Similar feelings as you're describing. I found out that's what serotonin feels like. If you've never had a good level of serotonin in your body, you wouldn't have known how it feels.
Also, check out the book The Mood Cure. It talks about how to get your body to be more level on producing serotonin, GABA, etc. Great information. My husband and I changed our diet as well, more protein and fewer carbs, and that helps with mood too. Your gut biome is very important in serotonin production, so you want to eat well also.
Maybe you could be allergic to something you routinely eat ?
I read this book about Hashimoto’s disease Hashimoto’s Disease
They suggested doing an elimination diet elimination diet
You basically take things out of your diet and then add them back in. If you find yourself not feeling well you might have allergy.
It might help you ?
Not all weight gain is lack of will power or being lazy. We are all under stress and stress hormones are not great for weight loss. Be proud of progress you have made ! Keep it up any step forward is progress, even if it is just healthier eating / better nutrition.
Obviously anything should be done under doctor supervision. You could just run a couple panels and check hormone levels and do allergy test.
You can do this
I was recently diagnosed with hashimotos as well, and thankfully I am seeing an amazing functional medicine doctor. I'd highly recommend getting a comprehensive food allergy/sensitivity test done, that way you know what foods specifically to avoid. That's one of the most important things in my mind, is simply not eating the food that creates a stress response. And doing the test saves you a lot of time versus experimenting yourself. Also please look into betaine hcl and pepsin. Most people with hashimotos/hypothyroidism are deficient in stomach acid, which creates all kinds of vitamin and mineral deficiencies. That was the case for me. I was severely deficient in iron, ferritin (storage form of iron), and magnesium. My doc also put me on a natural T3 thyroid hormone from pig (GTA from Biotics Research) and I'm feeling so much better already! It's only been two weeks but the iron plus pig thyroid glandular is working wonders, like my brain is finally coming back online. Healing the gut is crucial, because if you have leaky gut, the steps you take towards healing will be consistently thwarted due to food particles leaking through the gut lining.
Highly recommend this book I just rented it from the library and it is filled with solid information and protocols for healing.
Look into finding a functional medicine doctor, who has a lot of experience and will actually take the time to work with you. As far as I know most western doctors don't know shit about hashimoto's, and don't even test for it usually because they don't know how to treat it. Simply taking a synthetic T4 thyroid like levothyroxine won't heal you, it may help a bit, but it won't get to the root cause.
Hope this helps! Peace

This could help a lot. If gluten causes you inflammation that makes every part of your health suffer, from malnutrition bc you can’t absorb what you need, to mental health and anxiety. I know you mentioned that was a big symptom for you.
There’s some good books/cookbooks that tackle this but they focus on hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s.
Hashimoto’s Protocol by Izabella Wentz
and
Hashimoto’s Food Pharmacology same author.
I highly recommend everyone read The Salt Fix. Salt recommendations are built on the same lousy science as nutritional recommendations.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/0451496965/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_QMIJDbBR8SR7X
Try an AIP diet, eliminate all possible reactive foods and add them back until you identify your triggers. People who continue to have symptoms while correctly medicated swear by this. It might take a while to get to the root cause. Speaking of which, there is an excellent book on how to identify Root Cause: Hashimoto's Thyroiditis: Lifestyle Interventions for Finding and Treating the Root Cause
Read this book if you want all the details on the diet:
https://www.amazon.com/Paleo-Approach-Reverse-Autoimmune-Disease/dp/1936608391
Basically, to stay fully compliant, in the elimination phase, avoid all grains, dairy, nightshade vegetables, added sugar, processed foods, artificial sweeteners, coffee, alcohol, nuts and seeds as well and seed based spices (like cumin).
I did this combined with a handful of supplements (fish oil, Tumeric, ginger, Boswelia, vitamin D, L-glutamine) and saw some solid improvements. I was down to needing a meloxicam about 1x a week.
Once my doctor prescribed Sulfasalazine after my diagnosis, I’m basically pain free unless I cheat on my diet.
The second phase of the diet is reintroduction. Slowly, one food at a time, add things back to see if you have a reaction. I’ve now found I can tolerate small amounts of cheese and almonds.
i saw someone on youtube recommend following the AIP diet and she used this book to guide her through it. definitely more of a natural approach but it's a very strict diet. i tried it for a while but i've been on and off. hope this helps!
I think with numbers as high as 350 you most certainly do need medication. When I am under treated I have been misdiagnosed with depression. There is a fine line but a big line between feeling horrible because my thyroid isn’t functioning optimally and depression. I recommend you do three things 1: search online for a quiz for depression. Depression isn’t anything to ignore. Like the above person mentioned it is understandable to be depressed over a life long autoimmune disease. However if you truly have depression then I suspect that there will be other issues at work. 2: Get a doctor that will treat you. One thing you can count on is one autoimmune disease will lead to more autoimmune diseases. You deserve a healthy life. 3: read Hashimoto’s Protocol Hashimoto's Protocol: A 90-Day Plan for Reversing Thyroid Symptoms and Getting Your Life Back https://www.amazon.com/dp/006257129X/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_k4SfCbNEAY8FS Best wishes! Any time, buddy :)
The book that helped change my attitude towards sleep and how to do it correctly is a fun look at tons of large-, small- and anecdotal-scale studies on sleep called Night School by Richard Wiseman
The one that helped me understand how my digestive system works and how to eat so that it functions properly is the massive, zombie-bludgeoning tome The Paleo Approach by Sarah Ballantyne Don’t let the cover and title scare you, it’s not a cliche, upper-middle class fad diet book. She deep dives into how the whole digestive system works in the larger system of your body and makes it very understandable. I was eating a food pyramid + junk food Canadian diet before and now that I’m not constantly full of inflammatory food my bp symptoms are so much better. I am still bipolar; it’s not a cure, but diet is massively linked to mental illness.
As to the weed: cut back, friend. I was an almost every day smoker. Told myself all the same stuff, it’s not physically addictive, it’s helping take the edge off my mood, etc. Seriously, I tracked my mood, diet, sleep and habits meticulously for 2 years. Weed was the biggest factor in mood swings. Always 2 days later. I enjoy it maybe twice a month now when I want to do something nice for myself like a happy sativa and a beach stroll or to make housework more fun. I save so much money I now use for cooler, far more memorable experiences and it takes so little bud now to get a nice toasty high going. A wise pothead once said to me: weed should be used to enhance life, not avoid it.
Good luck!
I had TERRIBLE PMDD. You described exactly how I was 3 weeks out of every month. The pill helped the cramping, but ultimately I think it caused the PMDD by screwing up my hormonal cycle. I now work with a neurochemical nutritional therapist, who has been a LIFESAVER (literally, cuz I was suicidal). She's put me on a diet of 120g protein per day, progesterone cream 15 days before my period to help hormone levels, and about $70/month worth of herbal/vitamin/mineral supplements. I HAPPILY spend the money because it helps so noticeably. I still have more "ups and downs" about a week before my period (like, my dog being super cute might make me slightly teary in joy), but no more suicidal/depressive thoughts.
There's a book on it (LINK TO THE MOOD CURE on amazon), but I found that I couldn't figure it out on my own with the book. The therapist did a series of quick tests and took quick action that made me feel WAY better.
Good luck. I know what you're going through is brutal. You're gonna get through this.
