Man I used to know the whole thing. The Simpson soundtrack, but not the movie soundtrack. Had some great songs. I used to know all the words to “Do the Bartman” “Everybody back and forth and side to side” simpsons sing the blues
I have this album and you pretty much summed it up in your description. Dark Was The Night is incredibly haunting.
Ever listened to those old Alan Lomax field recordings? My theory is that someone associated with the "O Brother" soundtrack definitely heard this one:

I found the CD in a thrift store, and it is haunting.
This album is satirical, its like Weird Al (although some songs go unchanged). The title is a parody of Purple Haze.
I'm pretty sure Cosby was purposely wearing that costume. His other cover albums are costumed too:
