I’ve been very happy with my reel mower. My lawn is uneven and has a hill, but it still works better than expected. It’s not good when you let your yard knee high, but otherwise is worth avoiding the motor maintenance and a gas can.

Oh no…. No no no…..
Sun Joe AJ801E 13 in. 12 Amp Electric Scarifier + Lawn Dethatcher w/Collection Bag, Green https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01FEATL2I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_THN5TBHBPNV5YEKE1BPN
A rake like that will not only destroy your hands, it’ll destroy you soul, spirit, and will to live.
Dethatching and scarifying really need to be done via machine. Gas/battery/plug in, one way or another it’s gotta be powered. You will not have nearly the same success as you will with a hand rake.
We dethatched after 3 years, and we’re amazed at the amount it pulled up. Never would I ever wish that amount of work on my worst of enemys.
It sounds like you may have a thatch problem. You could try buying the Sun Joe dethatcher or paying a lawn service to dethatch or aerate your lawn.
If you can deal with a cord, I have one of these (best seller on Amazon) used 2 seasons that works fine which I'd sell for $60
As you do more research, you'll be tempted to till your lawn. Don't. Using a power rake and core aeration is a better option.
You can rent a power rake but it was cheap enough on Amazon to buy one for future use, so I went for that.
This is what I bought last year for $100. Sun Joe AJ801E 12 Amp 12.6"... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01FEATL2I?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
SunJoe is a good brand. I had an issue with the first one I bought and they sent me a warranty replacement without a hassle.
Core aeration machines are too expensive to buy (couple thousand dollars), so renting or hiring someone to do it is the best option. The machines are big and heavy, so make sure you have room in your car before renting it.
When you buy battery powered tools for your lawn, consider the whole system the company sells. You want to find a brand of tools you'll buy everything from, so the tools can share batteries. Sometimes the battery and charger is half the price of the tool. If you already have a battery from a different tool, you can buy a version without the battery and save that money.
Look at GreenWorks line of lawn tools. They have a good range of products. Once you have a charger and battery, you can buy the other tools without that and save. Though, I like to have two batteries in case I run out of juice in the middle of a task.
My backyard was really bumpy and full of divots and thatch. I bought this dethatcher earlier this year and ran over my backyard a few times (in a criss cross pattern) with the scarifier blades. It pulled out all the thatch and knocked all the bumps down. I had it on the deepest setting which is 0.5" deep, but it took everything down to perfectly level bare dirt. I'm still working on reseeding (the dog tears up a good chunk of the grass), but it's starting to fill in nicely and I can tell the lawn is much more level and ankle friendly. I bought the dethatcher mostly for the thatch but was surprised at how well it worked for levelling out the lawn. I'm sure you could periodically run it on a shallower setting to slowly level out your lawn and not have to completely start over.
Looks like I may have linked the older version... the newer version is even cheaper!

(It appears as though they also make a battery powered version, if you want to go cordless.)
This device, corded or not, would be nice because it would be easy to store and you'd have both a "mower" and trimmer.
Good luck with whatever you choose!
I’m not following, are you saying you aren’t doing it at all and it’s getting away from you because it hurts your back to do it?
Try something like this
Plug in electric mowers work well depending on the size of the lawn. No messing with gas and in general they just work. They can be bought from amazon for $150 https://www.amazon.com/GreenWorks-25022-Corded-20-Inch-Mower/dp/B002ZVOLXE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1489603128&sr=8-2&keywords=greenworks+mower
You do need to mow in a pattern that starts closest to the place you are plugged in at and moving out from there. So long as you do that managing the cord is no big deal. The plug in ones also tend to be really light and easy to push.
https://www.amazon.com/Scotts-2000-20-20-Inch-Classic-Mower/dp/B00004RA3E Get something like this. Not at Amazon, this one is waaaaay more expensive than some. Go to a Tractor Supply shop or even your local Home Depot type store might have something like this. Go where the farmers go, though, and you will be able to get something that will work for probably less than $50. These are called Push Reel mowers.
I got mine from Amazon: Fiskars StaySharp max Reel Mower, 18 Inch Cut Width, 362050-1001 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N7K4BNX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_R6dkBb692P0QN
It's great, beautiful cut, super quiet, easy to use. I will say you can't be lazy and take a week off, this thing can be a workout depending on your yard, but that's half the reason I love it.
Oh Lordy, I just looked and you can buy them new from Walmart, Home Depot, and Amazon. Why?! https://www.amazon.com/American-Lawn-Mower-1204-14-14-Inch/dp/B00004RA3F/
I bought this guy from amazon a few years ago and I liked it so much I used to look for vacant homes in my neighborhood to mow. It was so easy to use and you literally cannot find a more eco-friendly option. Old school push mower with modern technology, can't beat it.
I am not in your area but before spending the money in renting you might wanna check out this guy, Sun Joe AJ801E 13 in. 12 Amp Electric Scarifier + Lawn Dethatcher w/Collection Bag, Green https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01FEATL2I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Rg.tFbQF2VBSD
Got it a few years ago and it had done a solid job on my yard and for friends/family i’ve lent it to. The power cord was never an issue on my 15000 sqft yard because i’ve added a good amount of outdoor outlets around the yard. Only down side is the bag is tiny and a bit useless but I just run it without the bag and then use my mower which picks everything up very quickly.
Are you logged in? It's a prime-only deal. Still shows live for me.
Time to dethatch, best thing you can have for your lawn.
Dealt with this myself, dethatched and grass has never been greener.
You can get this in “like new” condition for under $100 before tax.
It’ll rip all that out and get you good soil exposure for the grass to breath and eat.
I always overseed and fertilize after dethatch too.
This little thing seems to do good for about 100 bucks. Videos in reviews and YouTube seem favorable if your yard is small... I'm not sure how folks here feel about them though.

I have this one:
It's corded, so you have to buy a cord, but I like it because you don't have to mess with batteries or gas. Push a button and it starts. I've had it for 3 years, it'll cut through anything, it's a beast.
OP, I have this one Scotts Outdoor Power Tools 2000-20S 20-Inch 5-Blade Classic Push Reel Lawn Mower, Green https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00004RA3E/ref=cm_sw_r_awdo_ED4CZ8RN7JS9KTHW47QY used for about a year or so on a small yard. It could use a sharpening I think, but still works just fine. PM, if interested.
I'm being facetious really, I'd rather that then everyone sat on their own with our worsening mental health crisis (especially in young, white Deano-aged lads here in the UK).
Owning a shed with a mower is a right of passage for all men, surely? Don't need a lot of room for one of these and one of these.
In case you're interested in the sun joe which is also extremely popular and has a scarifier blade as well. This is the one I have and love it.
If you want cheaper, this one is corded and has very good reviews. I own one and it works very well. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FEATL2I/ref=ppx\_yo\_dt\_b\_asin\_title\_o02\_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1
If your going to try and revive what you have then you have plenty of time. I highly recommend dethatching the lawn first. It will remove the layer of dead build up that you don’t even know is there, which then allows fertilizer and seed to be waaay more effective. Won’t hurt any good grass you already have. Once you do that hand pull or hit the weeds with a grass safe killer. Then do the one step and seed the entire lawn… in June you’ll be amazed.
How small of a house? You can buy something like a reel mower which are fairly small and dont require much maintenance at all.

The one sentence in this jumbled mess of a story that seems to sum up what the Author is looking for:
"I'm simply looking for a device that is less labor intensive for pulling rocks out of my grass so I can safely mow."
Use a dethatcher that has the 'spring tines' attachment such as this one from Sun Joe. Adjust the height so the tines are just at/below soil level and it will pull the rocks up allowing you to find any big ones much easier.
I have a similar setup. This past summer being the first one with my Landroid, I tried running a wire between the cracks of the sidewalk that run every two feet or so. While I love my Landroid, I wouldn't recommend running the wire to that area.
Due to the area in front of my house being narrow, the Landroid would often bounce around off the permitter wire excessively. Also, the curb between the street and my parkway is rounded. It took many readjustments before I was able to reach the point where it wouldn't slightly slide down the curb and my phone would start beeping "Outside of Permitter Wire".
I bought a cheap, lightweight electric Black & Decker Three-in-One Mower, Trimmer, Edger that I primarily use as my trimmer around my fence line. Next spring, it is unlikely that I will lay the perimeter wire to that small area and instead, I'll just quickly trim it with my electric trimmer. For me, it is much less of a hassle.
I think you need something like this style, corded or battery.
