We set up one of these for our crow buddies to hang out at our window. Lets the dog and birds socialize even when the window is closed.
Peanut holder for birds
You can also get hummingbird feeders that wasps/bugs cannot feed from. We used to have problems with wasps chasing away the birds until we switched to these.
If she likes bird, this acrylic bird feeder hangs on your window so you can watch birds come and go, and would be great for a dorm room as it's easily removable.
I think the dumpling plush is also a cute idea.
My brother bought a bird feeder called “the yankee flipper”. It is the best thing ever if you have squirrels. It doubles as entertainment for the kids, also :)

This squirrel feeder is pretty hilarious, and oddly a bestseller on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Unicorn-Squirrel-Feeder-Archie-McPhee/dp/B014LIOC64/ref=sr_1_17?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1510092590&sr=1-17&keywords=squirrel+feeder&tag=popsugarshopx-20
I solved my dove problem, by the way!
1) Only put unshelled peanuts in tray feeders -- doves don't go for them.
2) Get a weight sensitive feeder like https://www.amazon.com/Squirrel-Buster-Standard-Perches-Capacity/dp/B00ABGSX4S which will shut when they land on it if you set the spring weight properly
They'll learn soon there's nothing for them
Updates on my anti dove measures:
I've finally won! I bought a squirrel buster
And calibrated it to about dove weight. When they come, they weigh down the feeder and shut the door, but sparrows and finches have no problem. Dove finish off the sunflower seeds left on the ground by messy sparrows.
I had some cardinals weeks ago but they've all but vanished. Hopefully the persistence of the feeder encourages them to come back for some delicious daily sunflower.
For whatever it is worth, the only feeder I've seen squirrels not able to master is the "https://www.amazon.ca/Droll-Yankees-Inc-Flipper-Hanging/dp/B00004ZB4U"
(the tube is long enough that can't hang from the top, and the rest at the bottom starts spinning if anything heavier than a bird sits on it. We bought one for my parents years ago and so far it has managed to frustrate generations of squirrels. But expensive enough that we haven't bought one for ourselves. Yet.)
If you aren't in the habit of cleaning it thoroughly every week, I would suggest a feeder easier to clean like this one:
Those type of feeders need to be disassembled weekly and deep cleaned with diluted bleach.

Its great! I love it
First, a feeder like this:
I'm in Harvard Sq and have about 10 different species looking for food. The largest that can use the actual feeder are Blue Jays. The Mourning Doves and Pigeons walk around underneath waiting for the Sparrows and Cardinals, etc., to toss them extras from pecking at the feeder. The rarest I've seen are red-wing blackbirds.
The best hummingbird feeders I've used are the ones shaped like a UFO. I've tried about ten different feeders and gave away all the upside down bottles.
The Aspects brand is probably the nicest but there are cheap knockoffs. It has a little well in the middle that your can fill with water as a moat that prevents ants.
These never leak (all upside down bottles leak as temperatures go up and dish during the day causing the air inside to expand and push out some nectar)
Super easy to clean because you don't have to clean a bottle. Dishwasher safe.
And they don't hold so much nectar that you waste much of it when it's goes sour
Amazon link for the photo but you can find locally.

And the best part is that there's not a bottle in the way to prevent your from seeing the birds.
They make a window version as well that I really like too.
Buy this feeder (Portland Nursery stocks them, too) and mix 4 cups water to 1 cup sugar. Hang it near your new friend. Clean the feeder and change the water every 2 weeks. Embrace your new life.
Unicorn square feeder. I bought one for my neighbor. It’s going to be awesome!!!

I just bought this one at the local birdshop but it's also available readily elsewhere. I'm pretty happy with it so far! Aspects HummZinger High View---very easy to clean, has a built in ant moat. Since hummingbird feeders require more frequent refill and cleaning than a regular seed feeder this is a big plus. More than the feeder itself I'd emphasize that part to the gift recipients! Good luck!
It's the very popular First Nature feeder with the holes. I tried the one with slits from Walmart but all I saw were birds coming, pecking the plastic (not finding the slits), and leaving.

I think lots of First Nature feeders have the same design. The feeder worked fine for a few months, but then the bees started in the last couple weeks.
If you have honey bees at hummingbird feeders, you have either broken/leaky feeders or feeders that are poorly designed. You really just have to replace them with good feeders. That's all.
I use these: https://www.amazon.com/More-Birds-Hummingbird-Stations-10-Ounce/dp/B005F5NGYW
I am sure there are others that work. But the More Birds feeders are up almost year round with bees 300 feet away. No bees on feeders.
Tell him to get the Yankee Flipper (flippah) feeder. I have two and now the squirrels eat all the fruit out of my garden instead of the bird seed and also my garden.

My brother bought a bird feeder called a yankee flipper? I think that’s the name. But it spins the squirrels when they jump on it. Maybe covid has made us all bored, but that thing has given hours of entertainment, watching squirrels sling themselves through the air.
Found it!

Have you ever tried one of these spring-loaded feeders? Solved my squirrel problems permanently.
I've got this one here, a little pricey but it works very well.
Going with 2 of these.
I liked the fact that they point out that red is a hummingbird's favorite color, and thus they make the top and bottom red, but they show clear water in the clear glass nectar bottle in the picture. I have yet to see an oriole up there. Lots of loons and ducks. Lots of eagles (not as many in 2020 as 2018/2019) and ospreys. Plenty of hummingbirds but also fewer last summer for some reason. Already told you about the grouse. I'd have to say the most common birds in camp are those little black capped chickadees. They're so freaking small, but man are they bold. Sit there on the picnic table looking at me until I make a sudden move, and even then it just sort of casually scoots to a place not much further away. And finally I heard one while I was looking at it. So it's you!!! You are the ones making that two syllable beee-beee sound!! Good morning to you too you little bastards.
I have a couple squirrel busters out which are really good because its hard to chuck out large amounts of seed (as some birds will dig to get to what they want) so it lasts longer.
I also have two of these. They are great! (took a little while for the birds to figure it out but its so cool watching them up close)
https://www.amazon.com/Suction-Birdfeeders-Cardinal-Bluebird-Birdhouse/dp/B00YSU3WG2
I'll vouch for these. You can find them at Down To Earth.
https://www.amazon.com/Birds-Choice-BEST32OZ-Best-1-Hummingbird/dp/B000PBXESO
I'll also add that the 2 piece saucer shaped feeders are by far the best not just for observing and photographing the birds (because there's no bottle in the way when the bird is on the far side. but are much easier to clean (dishwasher safe) and they never drip so do not attract insects.
I don't know why this one is priced at almost $30 because I think I paid less than $15 atv the farm store. They make a window mount one too. I believe they are made in USA if that matters to you (less chance of weird Chinese plastic leaching chemicals into the nectar if not truly food safe but that might just me being overly cautious)
