I enjoyed Wearing the Cape, which feels like it does a realistic job of integrating heroes into modern society. Prior to reading Worm I'd have put this forward as the most realistic superpowered media I'd read/watched.
Some minor examples:
All the costumes (other than PR-appearance only costumes) include body armor, and even though she's a classic "flying brick" the protagonist has a costume with heavy defensive plates.
Planes have clearly marked points to indicate where someone with superflight should lift them, should the need arise.
heroes have no special legal powers, but will regularly assist police. No-knock warrants against supervillains are raising legal concerns, and the "I was mind controlled by the real villian" defense is causing chaos in the legal system.
One of the more important things a superhero team does is remain visible and build positive press to prevent public opinion turning on supers when villains cause problems. Rescuing cats stuck in trees is actually a pretty important duty, and having someone with excellent PR skills (either superpowered or otherwise) is essential to every team.
Superstrong is good. Superstrong with an oversized tungsten maul is better.
A book you want is The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers.

Nothing really epic happens in this book, which is what makes it so good. It just follows the crew of a ship that (best way to describe it) plots hyperspace routes on an adventure to plot a route further than anyone has gone before. Again, this is less full of sci-fi tropes and more character interaction. I recommend it to anyone. Also, it is a civilian ship, so no military.

I liked Firefly, and I liked this, they are different, but have lots of similarities.
The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet is $1.99 on Amazon kindle right now. I picked it up the other day and binged thru it...someday I'll learn not to start reading a book at 1030 when I have to work the next day...lol. It was well worth the price, I enjoyed it and will probably get the next one too
Just thinking about it and re-reading your post, have you looked at Charles Stross's Laundry Files? If you liked The Dresden Files these may be right up your alley...
I'll recommend my partner's book if that's ok? She's not on Reddit, but she's super talented.
The Cardinal Gate by Amy Cissell, book 1 of the Eleanor Morgan series. 4 of 7 books are out, 5 is out in a couple months. It's available on all platforms. Urban Fantasy featuring fae, shifters, mages, and vampires. 38 reviews with a 4.6 average on Amazon

Looks like the link is to a different book, instead of the one in the post title. Here’s the link to it I found
The combined Kindle edition of the whole series is 9.99 every day, so this is likely not as good a deal as it appears at first.
Makes sense. I'd check with Main street Books/Second Flight. They're (now) owned by the same folks, so they probably have a good line on any book clubs.
If you want a good "entry" book to SF/fantasy, check out Becky Chambers - specifically, the Wayfarer series. Here's a link to the first one. They're very wholesome, lovely books. There's not exactly romance in them, but in her books, everyone is doing their best and nobody wants to hurt anyone else.
Besides Chambers, there's a decent number of SF/fantasy books that are also thrillers, mysteries, and romance! I think the book club just read Project Hail Mary, which was definitely thriller-esque.
I hate it when people post screenshots that show me only what they want me to see.
It has over 7200 reviews and 4.4 stars.
Stop going out of your way to be offended. JFC.
The Eleanor Morgan novels by Amy Cissell might work for you. A bit more spice than Briggs, but not drastically so. Romance subplot, but firmly not the main plot or even the series B plot. It's a complete series at 7 books. First in series is free pretty much every where. It starts as a road trip story as Eleanor and her band of paranormal misfits have to open the portals separating the human world from the fae world. Fae, dragon shifters, werewolves, vampires, witches. It's got a good sense of humor.
In Comfort Food, the protagonist trains his captive with "gray." She can't take it and eventually submits to him. It would take patience, but I bet it would work with certain personalities.

> A deadly virus forces Skye to flee her home. >A therapist, her first thought is for her “kids”—especially the mistreated Jesse.
>Can she save him?
>She knows nothing about prepping or survival training. She isn’t even sure who to trust.
>Dylan Cole? Maybe. If she can figure him out.
>Stranded on a desolate stretch of road, Skye must decide.
>The right decision will mean her survival.
>The wrong one and she will become the next victim of the virus.
Just FYI, this one is based on Fire & Blood. Just saying. This is what we got instead of Winds of Winter, or "The She-Wolves of Winterfell" (Dunk & Egg novella 4) and is the latest "addition to the series". :D
Audible Narration is the associated Audible audiobook. Here's an example that isn't part of the free Prime offerings:
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers
The Kindle edition is on sale today for $1.99. Additionally, you can "Add Audible narration to your purchase for just $12.99." That's not such a great deal, but frequently, the combined price of the Kindle edition plus the discounted Audible version add up to less than the cost of a credit, making that the cheaper option (usually not a *lot* cheaper, but worth checking if you're on a tight budget). The discount used to be a lot better a lot more often, but scrolling through the Matchmaker, I do see some Audible versions of Kindle books I already own for under $8.
Yep, its a book by GRRM that came out about 2 years ago or so (Fire and Blood)...worth a read, though be warned many of the character have VERY similar names, so you may get confused from time to time.

BTW, if you liked either of these and also like to read, I highly recommend Wearing the Cape. This genre is a little difficult to find decent writing for, and this is one of the better ones.

Considering that James Patterson and President Clinton wrote a book about the president being MIA (but for a completely different reason), I wouldn’t put it past Trump to attempt it.

If you're getting lots of traffic naturally and those that do convert end up loving your work then you have a good problem on your hands IMO. It's much easier to tweak the cover, keywords, categories, and description around if people already love your book.
Check out the listing for Battlefield Earth Alien Invasion:
The description goes in-depth about the book without revealing too much and adds in good customer reviews. Also, like crowqueen mentioned, I think the cover for the book you linked doesn't jump out as a sci-fi book. Lots of people just purchase based on the cover, unfortunately.
The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers --I bought this one but just noticed today that it was on kindle unlimited. An easy but well written sci fi book. I have a hard time caring about characters in Sci Fi books (I don't know why this has been the case for me, but it has) but I did give a shit about the characters in this book.
There's an audiobook for a dollar now of the original book, its yuoooge!
Imagine a world where fish could fly.
Come up with your own reason: Air is as thick as water, fish develop gas sacs and can become lighter than air, whatever. Invent your own rational.
Now, in this imaginary world, do fish taste like salmon or chicken?
It's your imaginary world, you get to decide with one it is. You can even write a book about it, call it science fiction, and try to out-sell L. Ron Hubbard's "Battlefield Earth".
That's the cool thing about imaginary worlds - they can be anything you want them to be!
Just don't go around making laws that make sense in your imaginary world, but not in the real world we live in.
Hey Rose just wanted to tell you Kitty Thomas' Comfort Food is free right now! It is not serial killer but it is gorgeously dark and a good example of structure for a dark romance.
Wearing the Cape, by Marion G. Harmon
Full disclosure, I haven't actually read it yet, but I was browsing amazon last night, discovered it (and the rest of the series) and was super into what I was reading about it.
