I could not recommend this hat more. It’s cute, practical, foldable for travel, comes in different colors, is comfy, is size-adjustable, and it’s affordable. UV UPF50 as well!!!

YESSSSS HATS! Bring back hats! I love summer hats and winter hats. Fuck I love hats. They keep you so cool and protect you so much, and they’re cute as heck.
For summer, I wear a paper straw hat I got on Amazon with as adjustable chin strap. I wish more hats had these tbh, here in Chicago one strong breeze will blow your hat right off. I also have a collection of varying summery floppy hats from TJMaxx.
I got this one on amazon that worked great! However, it was not purchased with "style" in mind - just that it's big, has a wide brim that covers my neck, and fits my massive dome. I wear an 8 or an 8(1/8) for fitted caps a reference, and this one fits well.
As for looking goofy... it's a sun-hat. It's going to always look goofy!
I don’t use Amazon anymore but I just searched extra large sun hat and it popped up, have you tried searching? I’m unsure of how to do links but I hope this works
Not sure it really has a particular name, its just a ladies wide brimmed hat, so kinda hard to find the specific one.

This looks pretty close.
Hats are the best! I'm a hat queen though, because I've had several melanomas. Wallaroo makes some of my favorite "cute" hats - search for them on other websites too for the best price, as some are a little spendy. If you don't want to spend that much, you can usually find older or discontinued styles for much less on Amazon or Sierra Trading Post (which has amazing deals if you find a good coupon) by searching for "upf hat." Outdoor Research makes some great, lightweight and crushable hats that are priced really well on STP in particular. Oh, and I just got this hat and while it totally makes you look like a farmer, it is reasonably cute and the price is right. Feel free to ask me more questions - I think I'm at about 25 different sun hats at this point.
ETA: And if a hat fits properly, it shouldn't interfere with your glasses. I wear contacts most of the time with HUGE vintage sunglasses from the 70s (they're cool, I swear) and have never had a problem wearing those or my regular glasses with a hat.
Dear God do not go to a tanning bed. Like others said, wear lots of sunscreen. To "prep" yourself, get sun protective clothes that you would actually wear. There are plenty of brands that have UV protective lightweight clothing that doesn't look like the classic rash guard you typically think of, but actual regular looking shirts (Columbia, Free Fly Apparel, Solbari, to name a few. Random ones on Amazon as well but these tends to look like athletic material) and wide brim hats (I like this packable, fashionable one - https://www.amazon.com/FURTALK-Womens-Travel-Foldable-Summer/dp/B079NC3YK4?th=1 ). I would definitely get at least one lightweight sun protective hoodie because though I'm in one of the hottest regions in Costa Rica, sometimes buildings have AC or the rainy nights can get cool. Also high altitudes are cooler and it would be good to be prepared for different microclimas. I also have a sun protective umbrella that I use for walking to and from school that I use all the time for rain too.
Also just so you know, do not eat citrus in the sun or cut or roll limes without washing your hands really well before going into the sun. Someone in my cohort (redhead) got a bad blistering burn that had to be bandaged daily.
This isn't made from straw, but it's a similar style and mine has been awesome for 8 years of gardening / hiking / beaches / occasionally getting squashed in a suitcase.

I feel you!!! I feel like my vitamin D levels have taken quite the nosedive after starting tret, lol.
I recommend keeping a wide brim floppy hat in the car with verified SPF protection so you can chill in the car (or outside) without having to keep shifting coverings.
Amazon 🙈 The sun is intense here and I'm pretty picky about hats I like. I like this one a lot. Womens Wide Brim Sun Hat with Wind Lanyard UPF Summer Straw Sun Hats for Women https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07BPLXSDK/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_FSBCWXB568TP70NQN61Q?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
What's the size/weight of your Sunday Afternoons Unisex Ultra-Adventure Hat?
I currently have this; it's kinda janky but it works. I cut off the extra layer of fabric on the neck flap, as well as the chin strap. (probably should have kept the chin strap) 2.51 oz.

I found this one which I ordered it’s pretty nice and not jungle-y and quite affordable: Columbia Unisex PFG Bonehead Straw https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0058YS7LM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_i_4PED5892R08AKCJQ82TA?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Anything cozy! If she has Raynaud's: Northface tech gloves, super warm socks. I also love my sunhat: (all people with lupus are sun-sensitive) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BPLXSDK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I got it about 6 or 7 times over the course of 4 years, always in the summer. I get it on my face and upper chest. I have some suspicions that excess UV rays are triggering my immune system just enough to have shingles erupt. This summer, I avoided going outside during the middle of the day and I also wore long sleeves and a UV hat when I was outside - and I avoided shingles all summer! It sounds like your body's immune system may react the same way.
I got this one instead. It’s smaller but came in perfect condition, not floppy and not folded. I love it: FURTALK Womens Beach Sun Straw... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079NC3YK4?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Ugh I'm sorry :( Your flare is even longer than mine! That sounds like it really sucks and I wish I could help. I recently bought an awesome sunhat that doesn't make me look stupid (I think?) and has this great little draw string and adjustable skull-size. It makes going in the sun for short bouts actually possible again! This is the one I got --> https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BPLXSDK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
If you don't want to click the link, it's called: "Women's wide brim sun hat with wind lanyard UPF summer straw sun hat" by Furtalk on Amazon.
Anyway, hang in there. My flare is subsiding after 6 months and yours will too xx
Thank you for your insights. Will definitely stock up on SPF 35-50.
Do you have a wide brim hat recommendation? Saw this and it looked good for the price https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0058YU2DS/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER. The buff is definitely in and I can bring a headtorch I have.
The Bose are mostly for the flights, because I hate airport/airplane noise. I won't pull them out of my bag much.
Protection from bites is a must. Got a mosquito net for 2 people, and will bring a sleep sack if it fits and permethrin everything for sure.
Is there a water bladder you recommend as well as iodine tablets? Don't want to pack too much bulk.
I will bring 2 t-shirts and 1-long sleeve button up and 1 short sleeve button up. Now I'm thinking I might need to cut some weight though.
That’s probably it, plus replace electrolytes with an occasional sports drink. I used to save an old bottle, fill it up at home and freeze it. Then around noon when it had some time to melt I’d shake it up and drink a bit, then do the same throughout the afternoon. It stays cool for a long time and really helps.
Being out in the sun can seriously drain you. Wear a hat, especially one that has a good brim. Even a baseball cap won’t be good enough at times. A men’s sun hat like this or this is functional and looks good. Try to cover exposed skin with a light covering, something very breathable like a open weave or mesh is great. Wear sun block - tanning looks good but too much will not only hurt, it will also drain you because it’s doing damage to you.
Make sure to have the damp cloth around your neck, it helps a ton. Just a light bandana or similar, tie it loosely around your neck and dampen it once in a while. The wicking of sweat and water will cool you off quite a lot, especially because it’s around the arteries that supply blood to your head.
People have been working outdoors in the heat for a long, long time. It’s just a matter of a few tricks and getting toughened by the experience enough to have it stop bothering you. If you keep it up by the end of the summer you’ll be pretty damn proud you did it and you’ll be able to tackle a lot more hard stuff too.
Columbia Bora Bora hat during the day, with sides tied up in the morning and evening: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0058YU2DS/
Hoods of various kinds at night and when it's cold. I'm thinking of getting a merino buff for sun and wind protection when I don't want to wear a hat, or when I need more than what the hoods provide.
when I was searching they seemed not as round as I was thinking her hat was, unless maybe I had a different filter on. I did like this one a lot, since I should be able to cut the hole in it easy

Drink all the water, dress light, and wear a good hat.
I usually go out in basketball shorts and a loose, breathable, T-shirt.
And wear one of these: https://www.amazon.com/Columbia-Mens-Bora-Booney-Grill/dp/B008FIFFY0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1469055995&sr=8-1&keywords=columbia+hat
Ball caps are well and good, but they don't provide your head/neck/shoulders with as much protection from the sun as you need.
