I got these 14 Sizes Crochet Hooks Set,2mm(B)-10mm(N) Ergonomic Crochet Hooks with Case for Arthritic Hands,Extra Long Crochet Needles https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RNNL6RT/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_BZMAHMZF4SA85FSCBMR9 These I found are so affordable I’ve bought them for friends who crochet as gifts. :)
I got this set from amazon, it was good quality and affordable.
He recommended ones with grips so I scooped these off of Amazon! I even got a set for my mom with rheumatoid arthritis! They are so comfortable to use. My wrist stopped hurting. Total game chargers for me. I love them.
I agree most crochet kits are not beginner friendly, which means is that thay might have a pattern but doesn't actually give instructions on how to actually crochet.
Someone gave my neice a scarf kit and let just say it ended in frustration as she was a complete beginner and the yarn in the kit was black and fuzzy (not beginner friendly yarn at all)
Now a better gift would be different sized hooks, and as the other person said get a worsted weight or a size 4 yarn in a light color. I suggest acrylic yarn as it is more forgiving when you undo your stitches. I myself perfer caron one pound to red heart super saver as the caron doesn't split the yarn as easily as the red heart super saver does.
I would get something like this which has a nice variety of different size hooks. Now there are definitely better hooks out there but as you don't truly know if they will stick to the craft this is a perfectly suitable beginner set.
Get ergo handles. You can get a Yarniss kit on Amazonfor like $17 with 14 hooks and some yarn needles and stitch markers. I've used them for years, they're almost as good as Clover Amour hooks which are a much pricier kind.
I purchased a whole set for under 20 dollars on Amazon. They all have the silicone grips and are metal. I've had them for nearly 5 years and used most all the sizes. They are holding up nicely. No wear marks in the silicone even :)

Come to the dark side!!! These hooks are absurdly good, I just splurged on clover amour hooks and when I timed myself these were faster.
I like this set It's on the cheaper side, but the hooks are full size metal inside the handles and I've not had a problem with them at all! 😊🧶💕

I use these and love them!
I’ve bought this set 4 times to keep in various places! They’re pretty good value and the case is cute. I really like them for the price. They’re ergonomic and they don’t snag yarn. May need some breaking in, though.
A set of hooks could be nice if she doesn’t already have a set! I bought this set when I started needing more hook sizes, and I was happy with it. If you know what kinds of things she likes to make, a book would be good, too. You could also go the gift card route and get one for Etsy where a lot of people sell crochet patterns, or a yarn store she likes!
I have this set, and I’ve been pretty happy with them! I also have one Clover amour and one tulip etimo hook, and those are nicer, but I haven’t had any problems with the cheaper set.
Beautiful!
And if you want good hooks at a bargain price:

No problem, here’s the link
It’s just a random brand I found on Amazon but I love the cute little case they came in! I know a lot of people talk about the Clover ones but I like how this one goes up to 10mm.
Best of luck on your surgery and your wrist recovery!! I hope you are able to continue the hobbies you love free of pain 😊😊
I got this set starting out and recommend it or similar because it has several size hooks, stitch markers, scissors, and needles. https://www.amazon.com/Sizes-Crochet-Ergonomic-Arthritic-Needles/dp/B07RNNL6RT/ref=asc_df_B07RNNL6RT/
Videos on YouTube are really helpful, and I especially like Jayda InStitches, TL Yarn Crafts, and Bella Coco. Starting out learning something like a granny square and/or dishcloths for practice.
As for what to make her, you know her best! A lap blanket? Scarf? What does she like?
I also have bought and loved this. I’m an intermediate crocheter and I haven’t gotten my finger calluses/blisters. Ergonomic Crochet Hooks

Hey there :) happy to hear you want to start crochet. It is such a great hobby.
Unfortunately, I am righthanded, but I saw a guide for lefthanded crochet on yarnspirations. Maybe it helps you. Also, there are a lot of youtube videos.
Personally I think it is easier to start with thicker yarn and hook sizes because you "see what you are doing". But it really depends on what you want to do with it. I started with amigurumi where I used a 3mm hook a lot (rather small).
I decided pretty soon to just buy a set like this. Since then I´m pretty much covered for an upcoming project.
With the yarn, I first went for cheaper yarn for practice and now I buy it with a project in mind because otherwise, I would start to collect it :) And yes, this is a real danger :D.
Oh and I found this site: https://lefthandedcrocheter.com/beginning-crochet-for-left-handers/
Hope this helps you :)

I like these. Most sizes you'll ever need, full hook, and they're ergonomic so they're helpful with wrist pain and carpal tunnel.

Im sorry you have to deal with that! I’m sure it’s not fun, especially when trying to do something you enjoy!
I’ll be honest, I’m not totally sure which part you’re talking about with the big curve? So sorry! The set the it came from was just one of the basic ergonomic sets! This isn’t the exact one, but the hooks look like the ones in this set.
I hope that helps! ;) Personally, I have a couple of the Clover hooks, and they are my all time fav. They’re a bit more expensive, but worth it imo. Especially if you just buy a couple at a time. I’ve seen some people have some like this too. I’ve never personally use them, but I’ve seen them, maybe something like that would work? I hope you’re able to find a set that helps friend! :)
