If you own your phone now, and are currently happy with your AT&T coverage, you could switch to Cricket and save a ton of money, as well. Cricket uses AT&Ts network and is super cheap with generous data allotments, but still very reliable. I've been using it for a bit over two years with no issues.

So I was able to get a 20% off code and signed up through the website and have a tracking code. I have a few questions on how to properly sign up for T-Mobile:

1. When I go on the promotion status site to check it, it says Tampa, FL for the location, but I'm in Dallas, TX. Will this be okay? It did take my phone number when I signed up and my email, and I printed out the confirmation page with tracking ID. Also, how long will it take for me to see the 20% discount for life on my bill?

Id say ATT and Verizon networks are pretty on par. Ive been to places where ATT has no service but Verizon does, and Ive also been to places where Verizon has no service but ATT does (I live in Southern California).

Now, that being said, you could be in one of those areas where Verizon works well but ATT doesnt. Wont know without testing it out.

I would recommend signing up for a $30 2GB plan (when you use up 2GB you just get slowed down, you still can use it). 2GB should be plenty for testing.

Pop out your Verizon sim, and pop in Cricket sim. Use it for the month as you would normally use your phone, if you are satisfied move over all lines. If not then all it takes is for you to pop the old Verizon sim back in and you are back to how it was before you did anything.

yes this would cost you $35-$40 for the month. But if its a success then you will be saving a lot more than that per month.

PS - I dont know anything about Red Pocket Mobile, but I would test it out with actual Cricket since that is what you are considering changing over to.

Just follow the kit's instructions and get select the right plan. It's only there for new activations. The only issue you might have is porting out your number if you want to keep it. You can port it to Google Voice and back to the new account. That's probably the best and cheapest option.

I think that Mint's roaming rates are a bit expensive. You're better off getting a prepaid sim from a local carrier there. Since the EU has no roaming charges between their countries, you can get a prepaid sim from any carrier in the EU and it will work in all the EU countries. One of the best and easiest to get while still in the US is Orange's (France's largest mobile carrier) Europe Holiday sim. When I was traveling in Europe with it, I was forced to be on Orange while in France. That was fine since they are the largest there. In Germany and Switzerland, I actually was able to go into mobile networks settings on my phone and select any of those countries carriers. So, if one carrier wasn't great, I could just switch in the settings. I pretty much kept it to the largest carrier in those countries though, Telekom and Swisscom.

With the Orange holiday sim, it's 20GB for around $50. If you look up Mint's rates for somewhere in Eastern Europe like Poland, it's $0.20 per MB. So for 20GB that would be $4,096. Even for a more reasonable 1GB, the price with Mint would be $204.

Make sure that your phone is unlocked.

If I were you I'd get the Orange sim or some other local one there. However carry your mint sim with you. That way you can use the mint sim on wifi for free calls and txts with your own US number. Just make sure that when you do that you turn on airplane mode and only leave wifi on and optionally bluetooth on. That way your phone will not roam with the mint sim.

You already have an activate account, number, and the $30 plan. You just need to perform a SIM swap. I think AT&T iphones should work. However, please be careful of sim size. As far as I know idol 3 uses micro-sim whereas iphones use nano-sims. So you may have a problem. Then your micro-sim will quit working and the number will transfer to the nano sim. You will have to do this procedure for each line.

T-Mobile doesn't care if you have a Verizon phone or not. As long as it's unlocked you're good to go. Also iPhone 6 Plus isn't band 12 compatible so depending on your area, you may not be able to take advantage of T-Mobiles entire network. iPhone 6s, 7, & SE are band 12 compatible.

You should be able to. You're gonna need the Verizon account holders name, account address, account number, and account pin/password if applicable.

I am not sure if you're gonna need new sims or if you will be able to use any existing active sim cards from those 2 active lines. If you find that you do need new sims, Amazon has them. Otherwise, T-Mobile might charge you $20 for each sim if you get it through them. Also, you can port those numbers in through the phone or through T-Force, no need to go into a store unless you need to do it right away.

I have used sims from UK Three in Austria, Switzerland and France and had a good experience. They cover most of Europe and can be purchased from Amazon and set up before you leave. You get a UK based number and we used it with iMessage no problem.

Porting a number means moving a phone number from one carrier to another. The www.sprint.com/1yearfree promotion is only available to users with a compatible phone (your future unlocked Apple Store iPhone qualifies) and porting a number in from another carrier.

In your case, it appears you do not already have a number with an existing carrier, so you'll want to source a phone number from a carrier as quickly, painlessly, and cheaply as possible. You could purchase a pre-paid SIM card from a service provider on any member country. Roaming is mandatory within the EU. So you can buy a card in France & use it with the same rates in the Netherlands.

I'm not sure it matters whether you use an eSIM or physical SIM. There are usually little kiosks to buy service at the airport. Sometimes there are even vending machines.

You can also get a service like Google Fi or an Orange SIM card ahead of time.

You could look into getting a prepaid Orange sim card! I believe i got mine off of Amazon, but that was just for a 3-week trip (and it cut off exactly on the 21st day haha) so I would take a look into their options and see if they have what you need for a longer-term service! Overall though I had no issues getting it set up quickly and easily after 10 hours of travel and while using it in multiple countries. There may be other brands that are better suited to your needs, but I recommend Orange in particular as I believe they are one of the top brands in France/Europe!

I used a Three SIM I bought ahead of time (actually, my method was more convoluted that just buying the month sim) and used it in Edinburgh and London, then my wife used it when she went to France the next year. Note: do not use voice minutes, they're stupid expensive; call using whatsapp or facetime/data. I'm pretty sure you can get it, put it in the phone, and test it out.

When I signed in and it asked for a physical address I think I used one of the bars near where I was going to be staying in Edinburgh.

I'm on T-mobile now, so int'l texts are free, calls are 25c/min, and data is slow (like dial-up slow - 128kbps) but unlimited. Voice is 25c/min, but if I'm calling via old-school voice it's because I'm probably about to die.

Specifically, you cannot use that SIM if your goal is to unlock the phone. The phones you bought came with SIM cards, and they must use the original SIM cards to qualify for unlocking. (Tracfone actually tracks use for the unlocking requirement by the original SIM card.) If for some reason the original SIM cards are not available, Customer Service might be able to pair the IMEI with a replacement SIM card.

My guess is that phone will have to contact an eligible tower to actually activate. The process online indicates that the first phone call is required. From Tracfone's Terms of Service:

Tmobile will also give you a temp unlock if you need it. Pop your tmobile sim into an old phone if you want to continue receiving texts while abroad since they have free global text and really slow data.

If you can get the iPhone unlocked, all you need is a new SIM Kit which includes the SIM cards for all three networks, AT&T, Verizon snd T-Mobile.

The 20 GB has always lasted me my entire trip but my longest trip was around 10 days. I was always hooking up to WiFi if I could. And every once in a while I found myself wanting or needing to make a phone call abs the 120 minutes available was nice.

Europeans generally use more cash but last time I was in Spain in late 2019 I could use Apple Pay almost everywhere. Even on the bus in Madrid. I had much better experience just withdrawing euros from bank ATMs but I have Schwab so ATM fees are reimbursed. Last trip I used exchange places a couple of times because I lost my ATM card and I felt ripped off on multiple levels.

Also, American Express is not accepted in many places. So make sure you have a Visa card or MasterCard and always pay in local currency. Make sure you get a card that doesn’t charge a fee for foreign transactions.

Have you tried calling your carrier? If you have been a customer for a several years, they may unlock your phone as a courtesy if you explain you're going to be using it overseas. Mainline carriers (Verizon, AT&T) are more generous than discount providers who resell mainline service.

Of note, many prepaid SIMs don't allow for tethering. For example, the SIM I used when I spent three weeks in Europe a couple years ago worked like an absolute champ in my iPhone but explicitly disallows tethering.

If your carrier won't unlock, you may be better off buying/borrowing a phone and buying a prepaid SIM than rolling the dice on a tethered mobile hotspot and prepaid SIM. Doesn't everyone have an old phone or two in a drawer somewhere?

Get yourself one of these, and get a tablet sim card from T-Mobile. Mobile hotspot is the only option I have at my house as well, and this works wonders. I now only have streaming services for tv (Netflix, Hulu, ESPN, etc.) and they all work fine. I also play Rocket League on my PS5, and it works great.

I don't think you'll find a Tello SIM card locally. Amazon has them if you have Amazon Prime, but in my location it still wouldn't arrive until Friday. That would be cutting it very close. It's not unusual for a port to Tello to take 24 hours if started over the weekend, either.

I’m the only one using it. At most there’s a thermostat, two Apple TV’s and a Sony TV that hook up to it. They’re never streaming anything at the same time.

Changing the IP address seems to work sometimes but it’s 50/50. A lot of times when the connection comes back on it’s very slow and keeps timing out

I was able to get mine here^ on 29 Jan, and they are showing as available now (15 Feb early AM). And they're $6.99 instead of $9.99.

All I had to do once I received it was activate the SIM by entering its activation code on tello (and then linking it up with my phone).

As a note, I ordered one from Tello themselves when I set up porting my number/phone from my old carrier and paid for priority mail (SIM card was $9.99 but 100% credited back before I paid the shipping and the account's first month), but usps ended up taking more than a week and still no news, so I ordered online at amazon -- the amazon one got here really fast, so in my opinion it's cheaper, faster, and easier to get it from them on amazon. Did you buy it from Tello or somewhere else? I noticed that all the sims on EBAY are the old CDMA which are not GSM and won't work on the new Tello service. Tello is not shipping CDMA sims this year. I'd contact the seller and ask for a refund or that they send you a Tello branded GSM sim that will work. The only things they can count with certainty is a list of blacklisted urls, examples are psn and xboxlive servers, and windows update

If a vpn is added to the methods above i can think of zero ways a properly modified device can be detected, and even if the phones sold cant disable dun usb methods exist that can then be extended with ethernet to a router to make a wifi access point, or you can pay for something like a mofi that should work on just about any carrier that doesn't have a IMEI whitelist since they dont have any ability to report anything and edit ttl in there own firmware with the default setup

unless your an audiophile that needs that high quality dac (🤭) just get an cheapo prepaid tracfone/net 10 phone and use that in airplane mode. you could get something like a moto e6 or something even cheaper with all the holiday sales now.

I don't know about the LG Stylo 4, but the Moto E6 has a user-swappable battery (in fact it's shipped with the battery outside the phone). It takes about a minute to 'install' the battery (less time after you've done it once or twice). My last phone works fine, but the battery is dying, and it would cost more to fix it than the phone is worth.

I actually bought an unlocked E6 for $100 (to replace my other phone with the dying battery), but I also just bought one of the Tracfone models for $20, simply to use as a 2nd battery and charger.

For $20, I get a battery, charger plug and USB cable, and I plan to use the Tracfone E6 itself as a 'dock' to keep the 2nd battery charged up until I need it (and maybe use the phone without activation as a WiFi 'mini-tablet' elsewhere in my home). Yeah, I always associated Cricket with a lower quality service, and I recall from years and years ago, they were primarily limited to the city limits, with zero coverage between major cities.

I switched because I needed something faster after finally giving up on Sprint. I like my stuff to just work and so far I haven't had any problems with Cricket that would cause me to stop using them. At the Harris Teeter on Park near Selwyn, my phone will lose signal at the back of the store, but the Harris Teeter at Park and Woodlawn it works just fine throughout. That's the only thing I can recall right now.

I've traveled via car to D.C. and back, and to Phoenix and back, down into Georgia, Charleston, and Myrtle Beach, and back, and had zero issues.

You do need phones with radios which work on their network, which is one thing to consider. I believe every iPhone 6 or greater has radios to allow it to work on any network. I personally use a Huawei android phone, but many newer phones come with essentially an all-in-one radio. This will be an important consideration in whether or not looking at Cricket will work.

You can get a Cricket Sim pack from one of their stores for 10 bucks or via Amazon and try it out on a new number before making a decision to switch and port numbers, since there is no contract or any cancellation fee.

I happily used Tello for 2 yrs for cheap ($10 + tax lasted me a year of use with their PAYG service)

But now all is changing.

The minimum now to start service is $20, and you have to recharge for $20 every 3 months. So it will cost $80 per year, which is still decent at a little less than $7 a month. The rates come out to be 1 cent/ min for calls and texting, 2 cent/mb for data. And I believe the balance rolls over indefinitely ( just emailed them to make sure and awaiting their response).

You could also sign up for the monthly plan, which is $5 or $6 at minimum per month, which is no data and 100 mins voice and free texting I believe. Verify that.

I also need to checkout pageplus and also another service called twillio or something like that.

Very dissappointed with Tello's rate inc, but yes, they still might be the best option out there for users like us.
