In the earlier seasons they used a 3Dconnexion SpaceMouse (which happens to be my controller of choice for KSP). I'm actually kind of sad they switched to the more cliche joystick, since IMO joysticks don't make much sense for spacecraft. (They put too much emphasis on roll which isn't as important in space and it's harder to make precisely timed bursts without computer assistance.) Then again NASA still uses them so it's not like I can call it wrong.
Glad that's helpful. If your budget allows, a space mouse with assigned buttons on the left hand is the best arrangement I've found yet. https://www.amazon.com/3Dconnexion-3DX-700040-SpaceMouse-Pro-Mouse/dp/B006GPZ17K/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?dchild=1&keywords=space+mouse&qid=1623881802&sprefix=space+mou&sr=8-6
This is a 3D Connexion 3d mouse! It has 6 degrees of freedom on that center puck. You can move horizontally by sliding the puck forward, back, left, right. Then you can move vertically by pulling the puck up and pushing it down. Then you can yaw by twisting left and right. And finally, you can pitch and roll by tilting the puck. You can do complicated maneuvers with just a twist of the puck. Pretty awesome IMO.
I don't know what that exact one is, but it looks similar in function to a 3d Mouse. Some CAD designers prefer to use them for the left hand, there's a wheel that gives another axis plus some have function buttons. You can also get right hand regular mouse with function buttons, potentially more cost effectively.

Yeah its a 3Dconnexion 3D space mouse used for CAD.
Some of the Tachi's controls also bear a suspicious similarity to this CAD mouse.
Edit: Makes sense, since both are used to manipulate an object in free, 3D space.
the Sandio 3d gaming mouse may be useful to him, it's got 3 analog sticks and plenty of buttons.
They're out of production as far as I know, though you can still find them on ebay.
The Space Mouse Pro might be worth a look too, but it is nothing near cheap.
Thanks for the info, I'll be looking into those tablets. Is there a specific one you'd recommend? It seems there's a few different models available on Amazon, including a few non-Wacom brand 3D graphics tablets. I'm assuming Wacom is the cream of the crop brand though, right?
I hate to continue bombarding you with questions, but have you had any experience (positive or negative) with the 3Dconnecion SpaceMouse? It's got good reviews on Amazon, but simply wondering if you'd ever used one before. It seems like it'd be perfect for me simply because it'd get me as close as possible as being "hands on" without simply reaching into my clay and making something. Here's the one I'm looking at in particular:

As for the Nvidia card, that won't be an issue with me. I have a really beefy gaming / editing PC I built a year back that has a GTX 980 Ti in it. So hardware wise I should be set!
In the Expanse, the Rocci uses a 3Dconnexion Space Mouse Pro to navigate, just saying.

This is actually in an episode of The Expanse lol
It wasn't in this episode, but I use the Rocinante's joystick every day at work. https://www.amazon.com/3Dconnexion-3DX-700040-SpaceMouse-Pro-Mouse/dp/B006GPZ17K
https://www.amazon.com/3Dconnexion-3DX-700040-SpaceMouse-Pro-Mouse/dp/B006GPZ17K You can find them really cheap on ebay and stuff. I believe they're actually discontinued and weren't very popular. The intended use is for CAD work and 3d printing but Eve added full support for them a little over a year ago and they work great for camera work. Don't buy the one I linked you though shop around I think you could find a better deal.
