You need a respirator with organic vapor cartridges. N95 masks and the masks being used/recommended for covid protection DO NOT PROTECT FROM FUMES. Those styles protect against particulates but do NOT filter out fumes or gases. The concerns with resin are the fumes so you need something that is actually capable of filtering out fumes.
I have a half-mask respirator like this one.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007JZ1MK6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_VCK44STXHNXBH3N57VR5
You'll need to get filters, too. The P100's will suffice for smoke particulates. You can get the round disc type, or the rectangular ones that include carbon to filter out odors.
In addition to the above, if you can afford it, Amazon has excellent air purifiers with HEPA filters that will trap and remove COVID particles from the air.
This mask is also available on Amazon 3M - 51131070264 Half Facepiece... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007JZ1MK6?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share and so are the P100 filters. The N95 masks you’re not going to find. The supply chains have been very mismanaged.
I use something similar to this, just get whatever filters are recommended for what you’re doing
Any canister type mask/respirator that is used in painting will definitely block whatever you're smelling. That said, they are bulky and ugly.
Here's one that's not super expensive or obtrusive: https://www.amazon.com/3M-Respirator-6300-Respiratory-Protection/dp/B007JZ1MK6
No you need one that can filter out fumes. 3M Half Facepiece Reusable Respirator 6300, Gases, Vapors, Dust, Paint, Cleaning, Grinding, Sawing, Sanding, Welding, Large https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007JZ1MK6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_5DAM8M7YVJCWQ1KYRXJB
Don’t forget to get cartridges. You can find the mask and cartridges at Lowe’s, home depot, menards, etc
If I’m in a confined dusty space, there’s nothing like a half mask with replaceable cartridges.
I have the 3M Half-face respirator with the interchangeable cartridges. It gets the job done, been looking at the RZ Masks. Kind of want something that isn't as bulky for quick jobs.
Favorite face mask? 3m half face respirator. P100 cartridge filters out 99.97 pct of particulates, vs 95 for N95. Much more comfortable. Much better face seal. Doesn’t fog glasses. Can’t speak well through it though.
I tape a piece of surgical mask over the exhaust port, so I don’t spread.
They’re readily available—you’re not stealing one from a health care worker https://www.amazon.com/3M-Respirator-6300-Respiratory-Protection/dp/B007JZ1MK6/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=3m+half+face+respirator&qid=1606927208&sr=8-3
Now that it’s cold, I kind of like wearing a surgical mask outside, keeps me warm.
>shitty compliance is not an argument against masks
Actually it is unless you plan to somehow force people to wear masks correctly? Which is quite literally impossible. It is because if the population doesn't wear masks correctly they are not effective. That is quite literally how that works.
All the studies I've seen about how masks are effective were done in hospitals where the staff was wearing all PPE correctly and taking all precautions and most importantly they are trained to do so; like there's literally a class on all of those things.
As for Sweden I'm not talking about straight numbers because yeah those aren't comparable since there is a different total population I'm talking about the numbers that have been adjusted for population. They are comparable to other countries that had mask mandates; last I had looked they didn't get massive death and carnage from not having mask mandates. Also their Health director stated that mask mandates were dangerous due to people when wearings mask not following distancing guidelines; so unless he lost his medical license and knowledge as soon as he said that....it's almost like masks aren't 100% known to effectively prevent spread of CoVid.
Also news flash a non-insignificant portion of the world is shutdown; so I'd say we failed on that. Looks at NY, CA, MI. Also according to the MSM the vaccine is death cause Trump is developing it.
Did you watch the video I posted or look at the link? Cause I don't think you did.
The only type of mask I believe that will do anything significant to protect you from CoViD is something like This with the appropriate pads and maybe N95(or higher) masks.
You mean these? 3M Half Facepiece Reusable Respirator 6300, Gases, Vapors, Dust, Paint, Cleaning, Grinding, Sawing, Sanding, Welding, Large https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007JZ1MK6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fab_08jFFbPMVYJ90
Did you cover the valve with a surgical mask?
Where do you buy the filters?
You should be very concerned about you respiratory health! Most of what we do is very detrimental to your lungs so proper protection is critical.
That said, I recommend a 3m 6300 series respirator with the quick latch option (it'll be 6320ql, depending on the size of the mask) half face respirator with the 3m p100 filters. They will handle grinding dust, smoke, organic vapors and most everything else we deal with. They come in small, medium, and large, so pay attention to that when you order. Proper fitment and sealing on your face is critical.
Do yourself a favor, do not buy it at the big box stores, it's cheaper on Amazon.
In case you're curious, I'm a full time professional with over 30 years of experience and this is what I use.
Have fun forging!

Under 100$ you're going to be very, very limited, mostly to half-face respirators.
For particulates (Smoke, tear gas, virus's) you'll want a P100 filter.Half-face protection: https://www.amazon.com/3M-Respirator-6300-Respiratory-Protection/dp/B007JZ1MK6/
Filters: https://www.amazon.com/3M-2091-Particulate-Filter-Pairs/dp/B00KYX8JBU/
I used that setup as a fire lookout during really smokey days. The filters WILL clog up with long-term/heavy use and it'll be harder to breath. That's when it's time to change them.
I also used the half-face respirator early on in the pandemic before switching to a different, full-face model (Survivair, S-Series)
For a full face respirator:
https://www.amazon.com/3M-Facepiece-Respirator-6800-Chemicals/dp/B007JZ1LG6
it's over 100$, but that's what you get for a reliable respirator.
Don't trust military surplus stuff unless you darn-well know it's new/know the condition for certain.
I used to do a 3M respirator, with p100 filters, but now I cloth mask since I'm fully vaccinated.
Got those bad boys when n95s were nowhere to be found.
So much better other masks since it always stays sealed, stays up around your nose, keeps glasses from fogging.
You look stupid, but then I always look stupid so idgaf and Covid will fuck you up.
This respirator 3M - 51131070264 Half Facepiece... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007JZ1MK6?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
With these filters 3M Organic Vapor/Acid Gas... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AEFCKKY?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Great fit, really easy to put on even with gloves on, and works amazingly well.
I have a 3M half face piece respirator. I got it at Home Depot. In store it comes packaged with the organic vapor cartridge filters. Here is the Amazon link. It doesn’t come with the cartridges though. Here are the cartridges.
Note that there are a few different face piece sizes. I recommend going to a store so you can make sure the one you get fits you.
> Not to mention the waste from masks is far outweighing plastic bags.
Different resins have different safety requirements so the specific resin you are using should give you the MSDS info so you can see what specifically is needed. Some resins do have lower and/or less toxic fume levels so it may be ok to not use a respirator as long as you are in a well ventilated space.
As far as where to get a mask I got mine at one of the big box hardware stores last year. Depending on current restrictions in your area and how restocked your local stores are you may be able to find one there. Otherwise yes they can be found on Amazon or various other online retailers. I think this is the one I have but Amazon has a lot of options that will work. One thing to keep in mind is that the filter cartridges and mask are generally sold separately and not all cartridges will work in all masks.
I’m referring to p100 filters used on half face respirators, Not the kn95 masks. It seems like Lowe’s still has 3M p100 filters in stock, and other online retailers like amazon Still have the half face respirator. Pretty reasonable price at $30 for the complete setup, including two sets of filters (4 total). These last quite a while if you’re not working in a really dusty environment and wipe down the silicone interior occasionally.
Like the other commenter mentioned, these don’t conform to our public policy on masks for preventing covid transmission because of the exhaust vent. And facial hair must be removed to form a good seal.
Here’s a link to the half face piece. This is a large, they come in other sizes: https://www.amazon.com/3M-Respirator-6300-Respiratory-Protection/dp/B007JZ1MK6/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=3m+half+face+respirator&qid=1599021837&sr=8-3
And here’s a link to the filters from Lowe’s, which seems like a reputable seller. I’ve bought these and they seem to be genuine and work well: https://www.lowes.com/pd/3M-2-Pack-Disposable-Sanding-Cartridge-Filter/3125515
I got this one with these cartridges
Any cheap resin and cheap mold would work- try dollar store silicone ice cube trays, the one that are for summer parties. Dollar stores also have glitter, and probably paint (a little drop of cheap acrylic can make a piece a solid color most of the time), popsicle sticks for stirring, etc.
The only thing I would say is important is ppe. Resin gives off crazy fumes as it cures (hardens) and it's gotten a lot of people sick when they aren't using proper ventilation and/or a good respirator mask, and wearing nitrile gloves (might get those at the dollar store as well)
Make your jewelry. Most of it is made in molds like everything else and it's pretty because people create neat patterns with resin mixed with glitter, mica, food coloring, acrylic paint, etc.
I think this one with the Vapor filters should do the trick: https://www.amazon.com/3M-Respirator-6300-Respiratory-Protection/dp/B007JZ1MK6/ref=sr_1_18?keywords=3m+multi+gas&qid=1653912924&sprefix=3m+multi%2Caps%2C101&sr=8-18
You need a vapor mask. N95s aren't designed to block gases or vapors. I use this one with these filters.
I've benefited a lot by having one, even just using spray paint, with the respirator on you don't smell a thing!
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007JZ1MK6/
The cartridges are about $15 for a pair.
Good! Here are some tips:
Siderea has a very long series on preparing for the pandemic. It's American-centric and a little out of date but still very helpful.
Good luck!
Thanks! I take local DFW commissions, if you're in the area.
My material usage in order of use:
That thing you linked isn't designed for particulates either, it's for organic vapor primarily. It will stop dust but clogs quick and tires you out more than ones designed for dust. The right 3M respirator for particles is this https://www.amazon.com/3M-Respirator-6300-Respiratory-Protection/dp/B007JZ1MK6 and this: https://www.amazon.com/3M-Particulate-Filter-2071-filters/dp/B00JE6V22Q/
Less money, same protection from dust, and when it clogs you replace the $6 filter instead of throwing the whole thing away.
You are going to make it! You are stronger than you can imagine!
From Europe so can't really help but there are plenty of mask designs on thingiverse:
https://www.thingiverse.com/search?q=mask+covid&type=things&sort=relevant
Once you find a mask that fits your face (some can be formed with hot water) you can use them and cut n95 masks in the shape of the filters.
Problem is that many masks don't use a type of rubber between face and mask and this will probably start to hurt pretty bad after some time. If I were you I would buy a 3m mask like this:
Bought one myself and its very comfy, has a vent though when you breath out so its protects you but not the others. Can be fixed with this (vent in the middle):
The mask:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007JZ1MK6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_rcKVFb1JNFX4N?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
And filters:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009POHLRC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_tdKVFb38BVAWQ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Make sure to do a negative pressure fit test with the mask once you have it on and adjusted to check for a tight seal before putting on the filters.
Buy a p100 makes for yourself on Amazon they are going for as low as $13 and the filters are also affordable. I know it’s not the sanity we deserve but at least it will keep you safe.

With a 68% test positivity rate, your false negative rate is the least of your concerns.
I know that sounds glib, but, seriously, that's a terrible positivity rate.
Assume everywhere you go someone is infected. Get yourself a P100 and a face shield and you can safely go to the grocery store.

Super light, much better to wear than the pink boxy filters.

N95 masks are nice but air will always get through the sides in a way that doesn't happen with respirators. Full face respirators provide the most reliable protection but are also over $100. Half-face respirators are the next best and are more compact to store. I have a 3m half-face respirator. They come in small, medium, and large. You'd also need to buy the p100 filters. Respirators also don't put pressure on the tip one's nose, which is nice.
These respirators are fairly cheap about $36 with filters
I swear by these: https://www.amazon.com/3M-Respirator-6300-Respiratory-Protection/dp/B007JZ1MK6

amazon will ship this. I have two. The cartridge are cheap too
I just did a search and Amazon has plenty for under $20. Ex: https://www.amazon.com/3M-Respirator-6300-Respiratory-Protection/dp/B007JZ1MK6/
