I think I may have found my problem, that link is for Amazon US, where my Australian account cannot purchase digital media. When I change store location to Australia it launches back into the app rather than change the website in Safari.

Quick edit - The reason I had to do it through safari was the Amazon app doesn’t allow e-book purchase, it might be more straight forward with the kindle iOS app.
