I didn't mean to cast aspersions on our intentions, I never thought you were being malicious. I just wanted to share what I am working on in regard to what you were saying.
As porn addiction, I think you need to look harder for literature. I agree that a lot of work hasn't been done on porn addiction in particular, but a lot of the discourses of addiction sound very similar to my own experience with pornography as well as many of those on this subreddit. What I am seeking to do is fight back against the primarily medicalized way of talking about addiction because thinking of addiction of disease is a problem (for the reasons I've stated above).
If you are in the market for some reading, I am starting with two books in particular to form the foundation of my paper: Addiction and Virtue: Beyond the Models of Disease and Choice is, so far, an excellent book. Dunnington is clear, concise and, has a great way of putting things. Full disclosure: Kent Dunnington is a former professor of mine so I am a little biased in thinking he's brilliant, but I'm not alone. His book has been assigned as a text in several classes and also does a really great job of locating the space between free will and determinism. He also spends some time on applications for the church because he is a Christian (and this will also be a focus of my paper). He focuses on Alcoholism in particular because he thinks Alcoholics Anonymous has presented an excellent (and far more successful than medical treatments) model for dealing with addiction, but his treatment of addiction in general is fruitful, I think.
Diseases of the Will: Alcohol and the Dilemmas of Freedomby Marianna Valverde is also interesting, though far less applicable. I'm not finished, with this book yet, but thus far it has not said anything about Alcohol that Dunnington doesn't say more clearly or succinctly. I am mostly reading her because I suspect she will deal more particularly with the tension between free will and determinism.
I'm still only in the preliminary stages of forming a proposal for this paper, but once it's done (provided it's accepted to the conference) in March I plan on posting a scribd link or something because I think it would be a great discussion to have, particularly on the subreddit.
