how about a bone conduction set what has a boom mic. they are spendy but I think in his case they may be worth every penny. they would leave his ears open to hearing anything going on in the kitchen but could hear his music or take calls easily.

Yes, same! I recently switched to these Aftershokz open-ear bone conduction headsets. Caveat: volume and mute controls don’t work in MS Teams or Skype for business, but are really good sounding otherwise.

I have been using Aftershokz (I think they are just called Shokz now). They are bone conductive and very small - so they don't really show up on video calls like my old Jabra Evolve2 85s (Which were amazing, but looked a little silly on video). The mic is really good at noise cancelling, I use a mechanical keyboard and they can't hear my typing. My ears don't get fatigued and they last a good two days of rigorous use before I need to charge them. Almost everyone on my team uses these.

I'm excited for you! This is the place for you with your peeps. Just yesterday I was trying to explain to my parents and brother how exciting it is to have a bone conduction headset and be able to take a phone call and still be able to hear outside noises!
I just got blank stares. Even my husband of 22 years talks to me when I'm on the phone. "Tell them blah blah..." Arrgh.
Anyway here you can get support and advice and validation!

His look exactly like this! This may be the model the reviews are talking about :( I used them for my meetings and everyone could hear me perfectly fine and I could hear them. I will note it's a tad softer than regular earbuds since it's bone conducting vs direct ear canal sound but I just turned the volume up more since it's not harming your eardrum as much and it worked great!
I haven't tried, but my friend swears by these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08DW2SJCQ/ (There's a non-boom mic option) These are the bone conduction style so you can still hear things despite ambient noise without cranking up the volume.
