Hey, the manga was originally translated by marvel/epic in the US into multiple large issues. There were 38 in total. They were also colored. And while they are pretty well done, they’re not the version to read. But that might be what you’re seeing with “#33”.
You want to start with the dark horse collected black and white versions.

You can watch the movie at any time but it does give away a few ending points of the manga. But the manga goes way, way deeper into the story.
I’d personally watch the movie after the manga.
I would personally recommend the original graphic novels over the film, for the story. It's much more fleshed out.
The film is a triumph of animation, and there is nothing better in my opinion for anime, especially given it was made in 1988 and anime made today is still compared to it. But plot-wise, it's a bit of a mess.
For reference, these are the books:
Akira Volume 1
Akira Volume 2
Akira Volume 3
Akira Volume 4
Akira Volume 5
Akira Volume 6
It's a shame the box set is sold.
Would you know if these releases from Del Rey Manga are right-to-left?
The graphic novel Akira is a must: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1935429000/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_TJ.eDbM4ZSPKE

I had to edit the original post because the wiki pages didn't hyperlink well due to already having parentheses in the link.
Both are a must watch and read, especially if you like science fiction.
