If you're just looking to try out the idea of an open style of grill, you could start with a Tuscan grill (sometimes called a fireplace grill)
They're a lot cheaper and smaller, so it wouldn't be a bad place to get a feel for that style of open live-fire cooking https://www.amazon.com/All-Stainless-Tuscan-Fireplace-Grill/dp/B0071962C8/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=tuscan+grill&qid=1600194339&sr=8-3
Also very similar is a santa maria attachment for the weber kettle from Gabby's Grills: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rku4WJixcGQ
When I get that itch to cook over just wood, I will just burn down some logs in my kettle and cook with the lid off. Just a heads up, I never realized how fast and convenient charcoal truly is until I moved over to wood. I find I have to plan ahead and I even had to practice making good fires that produced useable coals. (Lid down with only wood has tended to make things taste like creosote)
