Alpine MusicSafe Pro.
They're on Amazon but I got them cheaper last year before a festival.
I have sensory issues and mild tinnitus so they're a godsend!
I have these . I’ve had them for a couple years. Use them weekly at practice. Love them!
The sound quality with Alpine is incredible! You can actually hear the music better wearing these than without them. I can hear the music perfectly, and people talking, because they drop the overall 'din', like the excessive, unidentifiable noise.
I can only compare to foams, not these other brands. But they're fantastic. I bought them for EDC. If you've never gone, it's insane loud (let's not get into 'show X was louder'). I don't have particularly sensitive ears, and as soon as I walked through into the stands it wasn't 'loud', it was instant pain.
Popped them in and partied for about 5 or 6 hours. Zero ringing after. Didn't stick my head in the stacks, but didn't shy away from them either. The price stings a bit, but let me say this: Unless I can try another brand for free, when I lose these, I will be buying the same ones again, for sure!
EDIT: These ones: http://www.amazon.ca/Alpine-Hearing-Protection-MusicSafe-Musicians/dp/B000VO8PR0
Got these last year and highly recommend them, havnt fallen out, come with a case to keep them in and dont muffle the sound at all.
I use the Alpine MusicSafe Pro earplugs which come with 3 sets of changeable filters, which are good for finding the level of reduction you like or adjusting if a given event is particularly loud. However I almost always use the most minimal filter. Alpine also makes a few other cheaper varieties with fewer filters but it appears they all have the higher attenuation profile.
I would recommend Alpine plugs. I'm a bassist in band & these things are easily the best I've tried for playing/listening to music.
You can of course get much more expensive moulded ones, but personally I think they're unnecessary.
Another option would be these which I keep in my gig bag for events, they aren't a perfectly flat response but they get the job done for me (I do lighting so don't need 100% accurate hearing).
These are the kind I use when I'm playing on stage, mostly because they were cheap and work well enough. Custom ones can be good but make sure they're properly designed for concerts/gigging. Normal earplugs will make the concert sound muddy and shite.

If you're literally just going to a concert getting a moulded pair is probably a bit of a pricey way to do it.
What you need really is attenuating earplugs, you can pick a reasonable pair up for about £20. I run sound systems at raves, which often means getting a bit more up close and personal with a sound system blasting sound than most, and I use the alpine music safe ones, I don't have moulded ones due to the cost, and the fact I know I'll lose them.
My friend has the elacin moulded attenuating ear plugs, which he says are great, but I think they were nearly £200.
Fun fact: Places with live music are supposed to provide foam ear plugs behind the bar on request (I think its even a legal requirement), very few actually do.
The problem with foam/wax ones is that they're really designed to muffle sound so you can't hear it at all, this will make a concert sound rubbish, particularly if its a band....... its not so bad for rave events, because a lot of what people feel there is from the sound, but also the bass pressure from subs, but this doesn't really apply to band music so much. An attenuating earplug will reduce sound, but won't cut anywhere near as much of the sound frequencies out as a foam or wax earplug will.
I really missed some fun in my first university years. Now in my masters my hyperacusis seems to have gotten better.
But I'm still very careful with loud areas. I always have some earplugs with me and use them if I think it could get too loud (currently these in gray).
I also have to admit that I'm still too afraid to go to big partys or louder clubs, even if it probably wouldn't be a problem. Bars are ok in all cases and I also went to a louder concert lately. I usually don't miss those partys that much since I'm now pursuing other activities (concerts, theater, bars etc).
Try out earplugs! You really get used to it. I use two types of plugs: wax for very loud areas and a reusable pair with less protection but better sound quality.
If you don't want to spend too much, get what are normally called 'Christmas Tree' earplugs. They will hold down the sound level without filtering frequencies too much. You'll get them in most music stores. Just be prepared to lose them alone. I usually go with these:
They work great for me and I'm at a show (sometimes two) most nights of the week at work. No complaints from me.
I never go to a concert without ear plugs. I've got Alpine's MusicSafe Pro plugs, but the plugs from Etymotic are just as good.
Since they are "musicians" plugs, they have an attenuation curve so that the music won't be too distorted or muffled. It really sounds as if the concert's volume was turned down a little.
Never came home with buzzing ears after I started using them.

One user here mentions a concern that they aren't enough protection. While he's spot on about the actual difference (good foams can give you 32-33 dB, whereas these with the gold filter are rated at 21 dB), I find they are definitely enough, as per my EDC experience. No ringing at all after 5 or 6 hours.

(I just posted this in another thread. Something about don't upvote this because then I get too much Karma or something like that? IDK. Posting here too because I want to share the love for these things!)
Well, i have always wanted to try these ones, they have interchangeable filters if need be anyway (I'm a musician myself). I can't try them tho, cause it's hard to reach amazon stuff from my country.
Alpine Hearing Protection MusicSafe PRO Earplugs
They are 29.99 btw.
I use filter earplugs with over ear headphones.
I got really worried because my hearing was deteriorating rapidly, I've noticed an improvement since I switched to this setup, and I can still hear everything I'm playing :)
Saw my friend today and he had a pair of alpines, he recommended them so think I'm gonna get these:
Which I think are pretty much the ones you linked too. Thanks!
I've used these ones from Amazon for multiple events and they are good, no ringing in ears the morning after
Alpine MusicSafe Pro Filter Ear Plugs for Musicians - White https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000VO8PR0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_GAi1Cb2GHNFGD
Rambly and funny video about it from one of my favourite people on the internet.
TL;DW: Alpine MusicSafe (pretty sure it's their amazon affiliated link) are quite good
I can attest to these being great for ear protection, whilst maintaining a high quality sound in a club (as well as being low cost):
Do yourself a favor and buy good ear buds.

Yes they are expensive, but life with bad hearing fucking sucks. And they are really good at letting music through so you don't end up taking them out because the music sounds bad.
Edit: Watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzJePUquk1o (and if you guy the ones I linked use Tom's link so he'll have some kick-back).
I use these while playing bass in my band & at gigs, they've served me well.
If you're talking about in-ear headphones (the kind that produce sound), Tom uses the Amazon Premium Headphones, which aren't available in the UK so he got four sets the last time he was in the US. He talks about them in the 2017 Kit List video.
If you want hearing protection, Matt and Tom both recommend the Alpine MusicSafe Pro earplugs (Amazon UK; Amazon US; or directly from Alpine).
I use both of these together for indoor shooting and am happy for the price point.

Together they give me the right amount of reduction but allowing clear hearing as the electronic system in the Leights amplifies the sound and the somewhat flat response of the Alpine plugs keeps everything still sounding right.
Do you know anything about Alpine Music Safe Pro
I'm considerin to try them

It's simple. Do you want to be able to enjoy their music a bit longer? Get earplugs!
This might not be all that popular but I highly suggest ear plugs.
Studies have shown that early noise exposure has been correlated with hearing loss - he'll be hitting puberty soon and I highly advise you to try to at least take care of his ears.
Most likely it's up to you because a 9 year old will probably be more convinced that he needs to be more "cool".
Big-ass circumaural headphones. If you're like me and just need silence, get these.
