I really liked Stanislavsky's books when I read them early on. Back then they were An Actor Prepares, Building a Character, and Creating a Role, but apparently there's a new (to me) translation that's even better that combines the first two books: http://www.amazon.com/Actors-Work-Students-Diary/dp/041542223X/
