Also, if your check engine light comes on, Pepboys or AutoZone (or some other commercial parts store) will let you borrow their code reader (aka OBD II) which will help you figure out what the problem is. Alternatively you could buy yourself a code reader from Amazon.
This way, if you are uncomfortable fixing it yourself, you can at least get a rough estimation of what the parts actually cost to replace.
Any scan tool will work as long as it says OBD2 (you don't want OBD 1, though I'm not sure if they even sell those anymore).
I have this one https://www.amazon.com/ANCEL-AD310-Enhanced-Universal-Diagnostic/dp/B01G5EA74I and it has no problems reading the codes and letting me see the live data for my corolla. There are cheaper ones for ~$20 instead of ~$30 on Amazon though.
I got a basic OBDII scanner on Amazon I think. Shouldn’t be very expensive. Here's the one I bought a few years back for my Audi and it's been great. They don't make model-specific readers, so this would be great for your Civic. It's only $35 too. I had a Wifi/phone version one, but there was always some reason why it barely worked or was a pain in the ass. Being able to plug in and just have it work without pairing is worth the few extra $$ -

I’ve had this one for over 3 years with no complaints. I ordered a case for it and it sits in my truck now. I’d say I use it for with myself or friends a handful of times a year
I’m not crazy about stuff that is dependent on a phone and an app to be useful, seems like something that will be borked by an update / etc.
Unless you have high end needs, I see no reason to get anything real fancy. I think this is what I have, all I need is something to read codes, i have a real mechanic for extensive diagnostics…. though I’m pretty sure I paid more like $20-25 for it… https://www.amazon.com/ANCEL-AD310-Enhanced-Universal-Diagnostic/dp/B01G5EA74I/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_sspa?crid=1VFJ7994DSBWC&keywords=obd2+scanner+ancel&qid=1645412612&sprefix=obd2+scanner+ancel%2Caps%2C104&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&smid...
Or in my case ,P0420. So the whole 95% estimate is a bit BS.
But to not down vote you into oblivion,I'll let your smart answer slide.
This has been a good basic code reader for me. $30 is a good budget and even does live data.

I use this without issue for my 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth!
It's you have the ability, do the stuff yourself for the plugs and coil packs, it's going to save you probably $600.(if the code reader points to that).
Here is a link for basic code reader that does the job well and is cheap.

Baird Automotive in Clarendon was always good to me when I had a car. An old car, with multiple wear items needing replacement (cracked radiator, suspension and brakes). They always did good work, on time, and were straight with me when I talked to them about what things I "needed" to replace (affects safety, see: brakes) vs. "should" replace (makes car work good, see: clutch).
Good shops usually have a backlog of customer cars to work on, do you just need a diagnostic of why the check engine light is on? Check engine light could be nothing, anybody should be able to plug in an OBD scanner to read the trouble code from the car's computer. That's not rocket science, you can buy a handheld scanner to plug into the data port in your car to read these codes for like $20. Like this one. You could probably swing by the dealer and they can read the code for you.
It’s this scanner ANCEL AD310 OBD II scanner I got from Amazon. Still didn’t pull any codes so I got it towed to a hybrid specialist.
Update
The hybrid battery failed. I’ll call the shop tomorrow to get more information but they initial said it is $2200 to fix.
I checked another shop that does mobile hybrid battery replacements for $995 flat. Is there anything else I should consider or I could be overlooking before going this route? This shop does 6-12 month financing on the battery but I’m wondering if my 2008 is worth it at 191k miles.
Thanks for all your help everyone. I appreciate the new tricks I leaned here.
Yeah get an obd2 reader from amazon. and check if there are any stored codes.

Did you have any problems before you stored the car?
Maybe try jumping the car, to see if it will start. The battery could be weak?
I use this one because I didn't want to get an app for my phone or something. Yours is probably fine though, they're pretty simple.
Anytime you clear the codes on your car it takes time for the system to reset itself and calibrate to show that it even exists. The best way to find out is to get a cheap code reader on Amazon and find out what it is you're failing. For me I got a new Cat on my car and it failed. I drove it 50 miles at 70mph and the next day it passed fine.

This is the one that I use, be sure to NOT clear your codes, just make sure you're checking the I/M readiness.
There's no reason to freak out about it, just figure out if there's a bad sensor or something and get it fixed.
The super cheap ones are pretty junk. This is what i would consider the starting point for decent ones. Own one myself for light duty
Edit: same one, but $10 cheaper on Ebay. Leaving amazon up for reviews and stuff. http://www.ebay.com/itm/OBDII-EOBD-Scanner-Car-Engine-Fault-Code-Reader-Diagnostic-Scan-Tool-ANCEL-AD310/142022634839?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

Finally, if the dealer wont let you test drive the car, at cold start, and won't let you do a pre-purchase inspection from 3rd party mechanic, red flag.
They’re really not expensive at all. I picked up this one for my 05 Outback. https://www.amazon.com/ANCEL-AD310-Enhanced-Universal-Diagnostic/dp/B01G5EA74I

Pick up a cheap OBD reader from Amazon (like this one). It should let you clear the codes after reading them.
You can pull the check engine light codes yourself. Buy an OBD scanner like this. If it's gas cap related, you can reset the CEL yourself.

Car Repair PSA- For everyone here that is a car repair novice, get a diagnostic code reader. You can get one for $50.00. You plug it into your car, follow the instructions, write down the codes that appear, look them up in the including manual, and you know where to start. Even if you can't repair it yourself, give the mechanic the codes you found and they'll think twice before scamming you because you already know the possible problems.
My truck started running rough last year. Engine light came on. Checked the codes, googled a little, replaced the gas cap for $13.00 and the problem was solved. The gas cap wasn't air tight anymore and was letting air in and was screwing up the air to fuel mix and making it run rough. A mechanic could have told me almost anything and I would have just paid him to fix it.
edit- added that they're cheap
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01G5EA74I/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I have that. But it says no stored codes.
No, I plug in the code reader I have into the car and it tells me what the issue is right away so I know how urgent it is. That said, if your car's check engine light is on, there's almost always a reason for it and you shouldn't ignore it! :)
Here's one for $35~ plus tax. But theres a few cheaper available: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01G5EA74I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_T8PUCbA5Z3GE1
