It’s a 2.5 gallon glass barrel jar like this one that I was happy to have stumbled across for pretty cheap at a local hardware store. I was hoping to mount an airlock in the lid, and was bummed to find that the lid doesn’t seal well at all.
I just pulled that one up as a quickie reference for the wide mouth. Similar things can be had in glass too, such as this - https://www.amazon.com/Anchor-Hocking-2-5-Gallon-Brushed-Aluminum/dp/B000M9NMJA/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?adgrpid=61774118291&gclid=CjwKCAjw9L_tBRBXEiwAOWVVCZjojMkOC0VTTy-AEgpCjKYkLz7llVljyhLgUTlkbD1B1x5Ceh3gZhoCnRcQAvD_BwE&hvadid=274687734639&hv...
Searching for "2 gallon Mason jar"
For reference, buckets are similar to this:
I found some locally for about $5, and figured I'd take a shot on them. Turns out they are terrible fermenters, and despite the description, they do not provide a good seal.
I picked up a 2.5-Gallon Glass Barrel Jar and fill it with 9 liters. I end up with almost 8.5 L of mead.
Was in Tinland today. They have 16 liter glass jars with a plastic screw on lid maybe 4" across. Unfortunately they are almost $45.00. For what it's worth....shapewise something like this:
